Poppyfields Commemorates First Year Anniversary
WESTFIELD — Poppyfields, a fine children's furniture and accessory store located in the heart of downtown Westfield, is celebrating its one year anniversary.
Owners Lori Kowalski and Marlene Perez-Santalla are thrilled with their first year results. Over the course of the year they have tried to tune into what the customer is looking for.
The store now carries bedding from crib to king size, furniture that a child
can continue to use as he or she grows up and which can also be used elsewhere in the house; frames, prints, painted furniture, quilts, stuffed animals and more. Poppyfields also offers an in-home decorating service.
Store hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. For more information, please call (908) 518-9495.

WESTFIELD — Anna Tabachnik, a Roosevelt Intermediate School eighth grade student, was honored for winning the local competition and for winning third place in the district level competition in the Lions Clubs Peace Poster Contest.
Anna has won this honor for the second year in a row at the district level.
She was given an engraved desk set and savings bond at a recent presentation at her school.
Douglas Schembs, Jr., Westfield Lions Club Peace Poster Chairman, said he was impressed by the amount
of effort exhibited by the Roosevelt students. "I'm proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions with us," he noted.
Lions Clubs International has sponsored the contest for 11 years to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. Anna's poster was among more than 300,000 entries submitted worldwide.
The Westfield Lions Club has sponsored the contest at Roosevelt Intermediate School for the past five years. Roosevelt Principal Ken Shulack and art instructor Anne Cohen supported the contest.
Cranford Dramatic Club Sets Annual Cabaret Show
Vocalists Melissa Loderstedt and John Schweska will reproduce their New York City cabaret show, Celebration, at the Cranford Dramatic Club (CDC) on Saturday, April 10, at 8 p.m.
This special fundraiser represents the dual effort of two local theaters — the CDC and the Westfield Community Players (WCP).
The show had a successful run in November at the Don't Tell Mama Cabaret and Nightclub in Manhattan.
Musical director and accompanist Andrew Cooke is an integral part of the show, which covers various causes of celebration in life, including love, talent, work, and just the joy of living.
Ms. Loderstedt has appeared at Plays in the Park, CDC, and WCP. Mr. Schweska, who has also been active with the CDC and WCP, has performed in cabaret theater with Mr. Cooke in New York and Boston for 10 years.
Mr. Cooke was the associate conductor for the Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd, and was the pianist for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway production of
Aspects of Love, among other professional credits.
To reserve tickets, please call the CDC box office at (908) 276-7611. The theater is located at 78 Winans Avenue in Cranford. Tickets are $12 and the audience is invited for a postshow reception.
Westfield 'Y' to Incorporate Special Wellness Program
WESTFIELD — The Westfield "Y," 220 Clark Street in Westfield, is incorporating a new program into its
Wellness Department. Members will now have the opportunity to add a nutritional component to their healthy lifestyle programming.
"Weight Management Made Simpler" will be taught by Cathy Bruno, a clinical nutritionist, on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. beginning on April 26.
During this seven-week program, participants will learn how weight is gained and how it can be controlled. Advice about reading food labels, calculating calories the body needs, how to shop for food, putting meals together, and controlling portions will be discussed.
Participants will also learn how to maintain good nutritional habits and how to incorporate them into one's lifestyle for healthier living.
Ms. Bruno received her master's degree in human nutrition from the University of Bridgeport, and is currently completing her clinical internship with the Americas Research and Medical Center in Ridgefield, Connecticut.
Registration for the spring session will begin on Saturday, April 10, for members, and on Wednesday, April 14, for non-members. Membership in the "Y" is required to participate, and the class size is strictly limited.
Please call Karen F. Simon at (908) 233-2700 for more information, or stop by the "Y" to register.
