lower half of the inning. Mirto led off with a single to right, Veeck hooked a single to left and Vanderheyden blooped a single over first. Glen Walz scribbled an RBI infield single toward second, Marty Lillis’ grounder to second scored Veeck, then Bill Hicks yanked a two-RBI single to left. Down 7-4, St. Joseph responded with emphasis in the fifth. Don Rowbotham looped a single over second, Dean Talcott punched a single to right and Hoelzel bashed an RBI single to left. Rich Varsolona reached base on a force play and Mike Ciufia zipped a single up-the-middle to load the bases. The battering was about to peak. Krajcsik ‘kracked’ a two-run double to center and Straniero screamed a two-run triple to deep right-center. Wolff whacked a hopping RBI single over first base, then Grossmann murdered a staggering two-run homer to remote center field. Rothenberg got aboard on an error, then scored on Spitzer’s single to left. When the dust had settled, St. Joseph had scored nine runs to take a 13-7 lead. After their explosive inning, the jubilant St. Joseph defensive players finished off St. Louis in the fifth. The first two batters popped out, then outfielder Rothenberg magically performed a crowd pleasing, face-diving catch to end the inning. The disappointment seemed to strengthen the character of the “Men in Black” in the top of the sixth. Vanderheyden, the pitcher, retired
all three St. Joseph batters, not allowing any balls to clear the infield. Now, the St. Louis offense strutted to the plate with dogged determination. St. Louis, this season, appeared to be a team of destiny. Showing great adaptability, they became a top-notch “Posse” when they chased down and corralled the St. James “Gang”. Next, St. Louis sent a harsh ‘Message to (St.) Michael’ in the Saints Division Title game. They became the “Men in Black” and set off to complete their mission against St. Joseph in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Forsyth squiggled a single toward first, Metzger mashed a single to right and Chris Reimers sacrificed Forsyth home. Mirto drilled an RBI double to center, Veeck hammered an RBI triple to faraway center, then Vanderheyden brought the score to 13-11 by lofting an RBI sacrifice fly to center. Shaken by the shadow cast by the “Men in Black”, St. Joseph failed to see daylight in the top of the seventh and went down silently. St. Joseph was about to meet the Grim Reaper in the bottom of the seventh. Hicks slashed a single to right, Art Hobble whacked a single to left, then Chupko sliced an RBI single down the first baseline. Nate Mangiris stepped up and tied the score with an RBI single past third, then Cardinale delivered the fatal blow by punching his RBI single to right field. St. Louis had completed its mission.

The SPF Fire Faces SPF Soccer Mutiny
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Soccer Association Second Grade Division opened up their 1998-1999 season on September 12. The Fire and the Mutiny faced off against each other in a very well contested game. Play was sharp by both teams, particularly on the defensive end where both teams came up with key saves and steals throughout the game. Vincent Bianco and Philip Rosenkrantz shared the goaltending duties for the Fire and each turned in a stellar performance. Both players came up with several key saves on the day. The goalies were helped out by the swarming defense provided by Brendan McEvoy, Chris McManus, James Mason and Jimmy Walsh. Joseph Del Prete, John Maxwell, Blake Van Buskirk and Brian Gerrity all used speed and excellent passing and dribbling to keep constant pressure on the Mutiny goalie. Thomas Reade got the Fire on the board early with the Fire’s first goal of the new season. Jeremy Kaufman also picked up a goal as he took a nice pass from Reade. McManus tallied the Fire’s third goal of the game while Matt Graziano was credited with their fourth goal.
S. P.-F. U-11 Express Seize 2nd in Brunswick Tourney
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Express under-11 boys soccer team finished second in a South Brunswick tournament this past weekend. The Express compiled a 3-1 mark, outscoring the opposition 18-2 in four games.
Express 6, Montgomery Metros 0
Clayton Balch opened the scoring with a strong outside shot from an assist by Matt Fleissner. Ryan Cerrick followed with two more goals, one assisted by Fleissner and the other by Brian Osbahr, to give the Express a 3-0 half-time lead. In the second half Brian Halpin scored on an assist by Cerrick and Mark Ciecura scored on Fleissner’s third assist of the game. Joey Dziedzic closed the scoring on another strong outside shot. Henry Coxe was aggressive at halfback and Joseph Jacobi effective at fullback as the two goalies D. J. Garrett and Joey Dziedzic combined for the shutout.
East Windsor Stingers 2, Express 0
Surprised in the first few minutes by two fine centering passes that led to goals by the talented East Windsor right wing, the Express settled down and played even with the eventual flight winners for the rest of the game. Joseph Jacobi played exceptionally tough at fullback; Clayton Balch was steady at midfield; and Sean Young at sweeper prevented further damage after the first two goals.
Express 6, South Brunswick Saturns 0
The Express got back on track with Matt Fleissner punching in a goal
after a scramble in front of the net. On a similar scramble, Ryan Cerrick followed up with another goal. Joseph Jacobi then scored on a free kick from near midfield as Cerrick’s aggressive charge distracted the South Brunswick goalie and allowed the ball to roll in for the score. In the second half, Clayton Balch scored after correctly anticipating Joe Cepparullo’s excellent pass into the penalty area. Matt Fleissner then scored one-on-one with the goalie after a nice Brian Halpin assisting pass. Halpin then wheeled and hammered in a goal from a Jack Davis assist. Anthony Baliatico and Jonathan Defiore turned in their best performances of the tournament, Baliatico on defense and Defiore alternating between striker and halfback.
Express 6, West Windsor Terminators 0
Matt Fleissner opened the scoring with a hard shot following a Mark Ciecura pass. Joseph Jacobi then scored with a superb outside shot when the ball bounced out to him after an equally superb corner kick from Ciecura. Ryan Cerrick and Jacobi again scored from outside, followed by Brian Halpin from a Jack Davis header-assist and Clayton Balch, whose shot glanced off a West Windsor player for a goal. Showing good sportsmanship, the Express did not add to their 6-0 halftime lead, refusing to shoot even though they had multiple opportunities.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood Jazz 2, Watchung Hills Wolves 1

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Jazz girls inter-city soccer team began their fall season with a solid second place finish at the 15 th Annual Piscataway Fall Soccer Classic. The two day tournament played under warm sunny skies matched the Jazz in two games against the Piscataway Golden Arrows and the Watchung Hills Wolves. In game one on September 12, the Jazz scored early when Loni Kaye fought off two defenders to knock in the rebound of a shot by Gaby Falco. A strong defensive effort by the Jazz made the one goal stand and the Jazz came away with a shut-out victory over the
Piscataway Golden Arrows. Later that afternoon the Jazz jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on some fast foot work by Jessica McGarry who beat the Watchung Hills Wolves’ goalkeeper on a close in shot. The Wolves broke out to a lead when they converted two penalty shots and claimed a 4-1 win. On September 13, the Jazz avenged their earlier defeat at the claws of the Wolves with a 2-1 triumph. Maddie Wasser keyed the victory with a booming shot from outside the 18-yard line that whizzed over the goalie’s head. After a tying goal by Watchung, Hallie Mintz made a fine save to keep the game tied until Bitsy Kipping banged in the game winner. The final game was another nail biter. Some good defense in the first half by Lauren Hercel and Briana Falco kept the game close, but goals by Shannon Hauser and Lauren Mains weren’t enough to stop Piscataway from edging the Jazz 3-2. Throughout the tournament the Jazz were sparked by some sound play by their new teammates Jessica Churgin, Lindsey Fitzgerald and Meaghan Kelly as the Jazz moved up from Division 5 to Division 4.
