yards last season as a running back and also had 35 tackles and one interception as a defensive back. Dowling was devastating on defense as he totaled 74 tackles. This season, Dowling will give added support as fullback. “Lee and Dowling are our fullbacks. They will share the load at fullback. Lamont, Giancone and senior (Kevin) McCormick are the three veteran halfbacks,” Tranchina pointed out. Tranchina will put senior Gabe Perez at the tight end position on offense. Last year, Perez did an outstanding job as a defensive back and will continue at that slot this year. Perez’s most memorable game was against Scotch Plains-Fanwood when he recorded two crucial sacks and batted down two pass attempts. “We will have a couple of wide receivers, Jason Merritt, Maurice Boatwright and Sergio Villafane who will be switching in-and-out and bringing in the plays,” explained Tranchia. Tranchina is particularly pleased with the size and depth of his line. Seniors Tom Langton, Thornton, Devin Griffiths and Greg Jackson add experience and size. Martinowich amassed 32 tackles last year. Albino had 27 tackles last year. Albino saved the Irvington game last year by making a crucial safety. “We have a lot of linemen. The luxury is that these men will not have to play both offense and defense this year. Albino and (junior) Joey Sanders can play center on offense. Two returning guards, Matt Krug who missed the last couple of games with

a knee injury last year and Willie Hannis at left guard look real good,” commented Tranchina. There are several vacant spots up for grabs in the defensive backfield and Tranchina explained the present status. “Lamont (Turner) returns for his third year at halfback and then there will be about four or five guys fighting for three positions at halfback. We have (Maurice) Boatwright, Merritt, Giancone and McCormack. McCormack will be a starter.” The complete inside linebacker corps will be Dowling and Lee, backed by seniors Anthony Pecoraro and Joe Petrucelli. Doerr, Krug and junior Josh Ray will be rotated at the outside linebacker positions. “We will rotate a lot of guys this season. We have 51-52 kids out this year. We had 45 last year and 36 the year before, so I’m happy about the depth this year. We have 24 seniors this year,” Tranchina is happy to report. Tranchina was asked to share his feelings about Westfield’s shift to Group 3 and he responded with emphasis, “Since I’ve been here, we’ve probably been the smallest Group 4 school in our section. To be a big Group 3 is nice, and that’s where we belong. We’ve always been the smallest, now it’s our turn to be the biggest. I don’t feel bad about it at all. If we have a chance to make the playoffs and we play in the Group 3 Division rather than the Group 4, it’s better for us.” According to Tranchina, Union, Linden, Scotch Plains-Fanwood and Shabazz appear to be the Blue Devils’ stiffest competition this year. Westfield opens with Snyder in Jersey City on Friday, September 18, at 7 p.m.

good gymnasts. So, if we would be lucky enough to have all four girls (Elmuccio, Hogan and the Caravello twins), we would have a fantastic team. We have plenty of depth,” explained Kovac. Coach Kovac was asked to convey her thoughts on the consistency of all the “club” girls competing as a team, especially in the big meets. Kovac responded, “Last year we went from doing good to going down hill as the season went on. I hope that we can do better than that. I hope that we can be lucky. What we are trying to do is to keep our workouts efficient and not waste time so the girls can get out and get on with their lives, and hopefully, keep everybody healthy and available when we need them,” emphasized Kovac. The Devil girls open in Bridgewater on Friday, September 18. “We beat them (Bridgewater) last year, but you never know,” Kovac said. The Blue Devils have several tough teams on their schedule this year. Somerville, Columbia and East Brunswick offer formidable challenges. “Somerville, we have never beaten. They have been very tough all along. Columbia and East

Brunswick both beat us last year,” acknowledged Kovac. With their several fine gymnasts and team depth, the Blue Devils can potentially have an excellent season. Kovac considered her expectations, then said, “We have 12 dual meets. A really good season, if everything works out well, I would like to win 11 meets. I think that it is possible to have an undefeated season if everybody totally lives to their potential and shows up.” The gymnasts have not been affected by the shift of volleyball to a fall sport and will also not be affect by Westfield’s reclassification to Group 3.

ANZELONE, TOTAMS, ACKERMAN RACE TO THE SCENE

Lady Devil ‘Pac’ is Back With High Hopes in X-Country By DAVID B. CORBIN

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Dominance has been the word for the Westfield High School girls cross country team throughout the years and this season the Blue Devil girls may tighten their death grip in the Union County and Watchung Conference scene. Many top-notched runners return and plan to leave an even more impressive mark this season. Last year, the Blue Devil “Pac” increased their unbeaten dual meet streak to 27, won their third-straight Watchung Conference title, captured their seventh-straight Union County crown, placed third at the Stewart Memorial and won the Randolph Invitational. In addition, the girls grabbed second in the NJCTC Class Race, fourth in the Sectionals and finished eighth in the State Group 4 race. Sophomore Alexis Anzelone exploded onto the scene last year by placing first in the freshman division at the Stewart Memorial and at the Shore Coaches Race. Later Anzelone ran away with the Union County varsity individual title. Anzelone’s personal best time, last year, became the 10th fastest time on the Westfield High School All-Time List. “Alexis (Anzelone) was a huge asset. As a freshman, she turned in spectacular times,” commented Blue Devil Head Coach Tom Hornish.

Senior Lindsay Totams will add some major punch to the Devil “Pac” attack. Last year, Totams became the Watchung Tournament Champion. sophomore Rachel Ackerman will be very strong this season. Ackerman placed first at the Union County Junior Varsity Tournament and her personal best time ranked 12th on the Westfield High School All-Time List. “Lindsay (Totams) was injured most of last season and, this season, she is expected to do very well. Lind

say and Sara Carpenter are our team captains and we expect a very good year,” expressed Hornish. “We have turned in some very good times already this season,” mentioned Hornish. Hornish. “Rachel (Ackerman)

The Raiders took control of their home opener early and maintained it throughout the game. Senior Eugene Ferrara scored the first goal, 24 minutes into the game and added another in the second half. Sophomore Mike Zotti and senior Peter Kobliska both had one goal. Senior Ryan Hahner had two assists and senior Tafarie Laing and junior Jeff Fiorino added one each. The Raiders virtually played the game on the Farmers’ side of the field the entire game. On the few exceptions, sophomore goalie Brad Lowyns prevented any successful attacks. Lowyns finished with six saves.

is right up in there with Anzelone and we have junior Maura McMahon who competed in spring track last spring is also doing very well,” stated Hornish in an excited manner. “We have a pack! We already have five runners who ran between 21:21 and 21:58 and our sixth and seventh runners are not far behind,” expressed Hornish. “Also Lindsay and Adrienne (Blauvelt) did not record times yet,” added Hornish. More depth and more strength is

yet to come. Senior Tara Bhandari, who won the Watchung Conference JV title, has much to offer as does junior Kyle Legones, who seized first in both the county and conference freshman meets. Blauvelt, a junior, recorded the 19th best time in Westfield High School history and aims to improve upon her time this season. “We have a lot of depth. There are 41 girls on the squad,” explained Hornish. “If you have looked at the

Star Ledger, you would have noticed that we may not have been selected in the top 10, but we were recognized as being one of the teams to watch out for,” stressed Hornish. “I believe that we can be right up in there with the rest of the top schools this season,” concluded Hornish.
