Bette Morris, 73, Conducted Research; Founding Member of Temple Emanu-El
Former Mountainside Mayor Thomas J. Ricciardi, 76, of Harvey Cedars died on Tuesday, August 25, in the Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin.
Born in Brooklyn, he had lived in Mountainside before moving to Harvey Cedars two months ago.
Mr. Ricciardi served as Mayor from 1970 until 1983, and had been Chairman of the Mountainside Board of Adjustment.
He had been the owner and operator of the Ricciardi Building and Construction Company in Orange for 36 years, retiring in 1983.
He was a graduate of Rutgers University in New Brunswick and a
member of the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity.
A United States Army veteran, he served during World War II.
Mr. Ricciardi was a member of the Board of Directors of the Frost Valley YMCA in Montclair.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Ricciardi; a son, Patrick T. Ricciardi; a brother, Rudolph Ricciardi; a sister, Gloria Filippone, and five grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass was offered on Saturday, August 29, in St. Luke’s Parish in Long Valley.

Bette Morris, 73, of Edison died on Wednesday, August 26, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in New York City, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Edison 11 years ago.
Mrs. Morris was a founding member of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield, and served as President of the temple’s Sisterhood.
She conducted extensive studies at the New School for Social Research of New York City.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Morris and Stephen Morris, and her mother, Helen Levy.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 28, in Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

Richard C. Marder, 84; Owner of Graftek; Active Member of Westfield Glee Club
Richard Collins Marder, 84, a lifelong Plainfield resident, died on Thursday, August 27, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Mr. Marder had been a Director of United National Bank for 31 years before retiring in May of last year. He
served on the Executive Committee and as Chairman of the Audit Committee.
He attended Plainfield schools, graduating from Plainfield High School in 1931. Mr. Marder subsequently attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
During a business career that spanned more than 60 years, he had served as Production Manager for C.P. Hoagland Printing in Somerville; as Unit Supervisor for Wright Aeronautical during World War II, and later in positions at American Type Founders.
He had also been Director of Planning for Lockheed Electronics and its predecessor, Stavid Engineering, as well as Marketing Director for Squires-Sanders in Bernards.
He maintained his own phototypography business, Graftek, since 1969, where he prepared United National Bank advertisements which appeared in the Courier News for many years.
Mr. Marder was a member of the Plainfield Rotary Club and headed the scholarship program for many years. He was also a member of the Christian Businessmen’s Committee of Central Jersey, the Plainfield Mendelssohn Glee Club and the Westfield Glee Club.
He was involved in fellowship at the Cedarcroft Bible Chapel in South Plainfield, formerly the Grove Street Chapel in North Plainfield, for over 40 years.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Catherine Loizeaux Marder; a son, Richard C. Marder, Jr. of Plainfield; a daughter, Elizabeth R. Marder, also of Plainfield, and a sister, Alethea M. Pond of Scotch Plains.
A memorial service was held at the Cedarcroft Bible Chapel on Monday, August 31. Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Margaret Mumford, 91
Margaret Lynde Mumford, 91, of Tewksbury Township, formerly of Westfield, died on Friday, August 28, is the Hunterdon Care Center in Flemington.
Born in Westfield, she was the daughter of William Ridgway Lynde and Belle Morrow Lynde.
Mrs. Mumford was a graduate of Westfield High School and of Montclair State Normal School.
After graduation, she had been a public school kindergarten teacher in Dunellen and later in Winfield. She had also been a nursery school teacher at the Wardlaw School in Plainfield.
She was predeceased in 1986 by her husband of 53 years, Robert E. Mumford, former assistant general counsel for Allied Chemical Corporation.
Surviving are three daughters, Marilyn Mumford of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, Nancy Mulvey of Andover, Massachusetts, and Shirley Ferguson of Hopewell Junction, New York; two sons, Robert Mumford of Darnestown, Maryland and Richard Mumford of Arlington, Virginia; a sister, Marian L. Collins of Wilbraham, Massachusetts; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 5, at 4 p.m. at the Lebanon United Methodist Church, Main Street, Lebanon.

Bertha A. Pfeiffer, 83
Bertha Ann Briant Pfeiffer, 83, of Bound Brook died on Thursday, August 27, at home.
Born in Westfield, she had moved to Bound Brook in 1941.
Mrs. Pfeiffer had been an inspector at Thermionics Products in North Plainfield before retiring.
Surviving are her husband, Arthur Pfeiffer; a son, William Pfeiffer of Bound Brook, two sisters, Kathryn Kunz of Westfield and Alice Nelson of Florida, and three brothers, Clarence Briant, Jr. of Westfield, Russell Briant of South Carolina and Donald Briant of Edison.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 28, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Lily Marcus, 89, of Westfield died on Saturday, August 29, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Czechoslovakia, she had lived in Panama and in New York City before moving to Westfield in 1987.
Mrs. Marcus had been a saleswoman for B. Altman and Company in New York City for several years before retiring in 1975.
Surviving are a daughter, Helen Roberts of Westfield, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 31, at the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

Annette Dudley, 85
Annette Hallberg Dudley, 85, formerly of Westfield, died on Tuesday, August 25 at her home in Munroe Village in Jamesburg.
Born in Bayonne, she had lived in Westfield for many years before moving to East Dennis, Massachusetts. She lived there from 1965 to 1990, when she relocated to Jamesburg.
Mrs. Dudley was a graduate of Bayonne High School and Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York.
She had taught foreign languages at Caldwell High School for many years.
She was a former member of the Dennis Garden Club, the Ladies Nine Holers at the Dennis Pines Golf Course in Dennis, and a former member of the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwichport, Massachusetts.
She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Henry G. Dudley, in 1989.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas G. Dudley of Thompson, Pennsylvania, Kenneth H. Dudley of Plainfield and Henry G. Dudley, Jr. of Brookfield Center, Connecticut, and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at the Quivet Neck Cemetery in East Dennis on Monday, August 31.

Kathryn Rohrer, 69, Technical Editor; Coordinated Crusader Scholars Program
Kathryn Rohrer, 69, of Warren died on Friday, August 28, at her home.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Maplewood, in Westfield, in Wheaton, Illinois, and in Memphis, Tennessee before moving to Warren in 1978.
She graduated from Vassar College in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Comparative Religion.
Mrs. Rohrer had been a technical editor with Bell Telephone Labs in Murray Hill until 1956.
She was a member and editor of the Village Voice Newsletter of the Union Village United Methodist Church in Berkeley Heights.
She was a coordinator of the Crusader Scholars Program at the Methodist Board of Missions in New York City.
Surviving are her husband, James Rohrer; two sons, David William Rohrer and James Philip Rohrer; a daughter, Sue Ellen Rohrer Leys; a sister, Ellen G. Raymer, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 1, in the Union Village United Methodist Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.

Charlotte Harring, 74, Was Secretary; Active in Child Evangelism Foundation Louise Terry, 76, Previously Owned
Terry-Lou Zoo in Scotch Plains
Louise Terry, 76, of Avon Park, Florida, died Friday, August 28, at her home.
Born in Winchester, New Hampshire, she had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Avon Park in 1993.
She was the owner of Terry-Lou Zoo in Scotch Plains. The 7-acre zoo was established more than 49 years ago. Most of the animals housed at the zoo were castoffs from other zoos. Some of the animals were too old to breed, were deformed or had been injured or maimed by hunters.
Mrs. Terry and her husband, Franklyn T. Terry, owned the zoo until they sold it in 1993. In 1997, the zoo was closed and the animals were relocated.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Franklyn Avery Terry
Charlotte M. Harring, 74, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, August 28, at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Hillside before moving to Scotch Plains in 1954.
Mrs. Harring had been a secretary for Calvin Schwartz Realty for 20 years, retiring in 1977.
She was a member of the Child Evangelism Foundation of Central Jersey, where she was also a secretary. She was a member of the Sarah Circle of the Scotch Plains Baptist Church, and a member of the Green Brook Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Robert E. Harring; two daughters, Joyce K. Locknish and Lorraine E. Nobles, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 1, at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Lillian Page, 77, of Gillette died on Thursday, August 27.
Born in Ireland, Mrs. Page came to the United States at age 9. She had lived in Newark, Elizabeth and Basking Ridge before moving to Gillette.
She was a homemaker. Mrs. Page was predeceased by her son, James Boyce.
Surviving are her husband, Clifford Page; two daughters; Karen Maly of Westfield and Janis Coty of Gillette; a sister, Kathleen Gallagher of South Orange; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 29, at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church. Arrangements were under the direction of the Valley Memorial Funeral Home in Gillette.

Sapfo Andrews Covras, 93, of Westfield died on Friday, August 28, at the Berkeley Hall Nursing Home in Berkeley Heights.
Born in Mytilini, Greece on February 16, 1905, Mrs. Covras had lived in Westfield for many years.
She was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, Gabriel Covras, in 1941.
Surviving is a daughter, Susan Covras of Westfield.
Private funeral arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Lizzie E. Murray, 95, of Fanwood died on Thursday, August 27, at home.
Born in Lincolnton, Georgia, she had moved to Passaic in 1945. She relocated to Scotch Plains in 1948 and later settled in Fanwood.
She had worked at the Van Dorn Laundry in Westfield, retiring in 1963.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Murray, three sisters and two brothers.
Surviving are three daughters, Adele Roane of Plainfield and Susie Griffin and Eva Murray, both of Fanwood; a son, Eithel Murray of Plainfield; a grandson; and a greatgrandson.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 1, at the Plinton Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.

Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Sarasota.
Mrs. Moeller had been a member of the Wallberg Post No. 3 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Westfield.

Frank J. Malinski, 80, Served in U.S. Army; Active in American Legion; Local Clubs
Frank J. Malinski, 80, of Scotch Plains, died Monday, August 31, at Integrated Health Services of New Jersey at Somerset Valley in Bound Brook.
Born in Port Chester, New York, he had lived in Westfield and moved to Scotch Plains 50 years ago.
Mr. Malinski was a graduate of Westfield High School.
He had worked for Custom Molders in Scotch Plains as a foreman for 35 years before retiring in 1983.
Mr. Malinski was a Private First Class in the United States Army serv
ing in the 3rd Army, 4th Armored Division, 37th Tank Battalion under General George Patton during World War II. He took part in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge and earned many medals including the Silver Star for gallantry. He was a POW in 1945.
Mr. Malinski was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, the American Legion, Martin Wallberg Post No. 3 in Westfield, and was also a member of the 4th Armored Division in New York City.
Surviving are his wife, Teresa Napolitano Malinski; a daughter, Violet M. Malinski of Yonkers, New York; a son, John F. Malinski of West Windsor, and a sister, Stella Malinski of Bayville.
The funeral from The Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood, today, Thursday, September 3, at 9:15 a.m. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains. Entombment will be at Good Shepherd Chapel Mausoleum in St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia.
