Program’s Fifth Anniversary
The Community Support Program, operated in Roselle by The Arc of Union County, is planning a fifth anniversary celebration, including a luncheon and awards presentation, on Thursday, September 10, at the Roselle site.
The day program for adults with developmental disabilities such as cerebral palsy and Down Syndrome opened in August of 1993, focusing on the needs of graduates of the Union County Day Training Program and other area residents.
Community Support utilizes the expertise of a team of Licensed Practical Nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists and speech therapists to enable program participants to achieve their fullest potential, according to Arc spokeswoman Maria Denk.
“The Community Support Program gives families a safe and se
cure environment to receive help on a daily basis. There is really nowhere else for individuals with developmental disabilities and medical complications to go after completing their educational program,” remarked Susan Airey, Director of Health and Behavior for The Arc.
“Most would be at home doing nothing. Here, they have a talented staff encouraging them to take active roles in their environment,” she added.
During the celebration, a special dedication will be made in memory of George Cheslak. A former Linden resident, Mr. Cheslak participated in the Community Support Program from its inception until his death on August 6 of this year.
For more information on the Community Support Program, please call The Arc of Union County at (908) 754-5910.

Mountainside Lions Launch Fundraiser For New Tree Lights
MOUNTAINSIDE — The Mountainside Lions Club is asking area residents and business leaders to become “Points of Light” by supporting its efforts to raise money for a new lighting system for the borough’s Christmas tree, located at the corner of Route No. 22 and New Providence Road.
A local landmark for more than 25 years, the tree is illuminated during the holiday season by more than 800 lights. After many years of use, however, the present system is badly in need of replacement.
According to Robert L. Muirhead, Chairman of the Mountainside Lions’ Christmas Tree Committee, a new lighting system is estimated to cost $2,500.
“Light The Tree” contributions, which can be made in memory of a loved one, may be sent to: Mountainside Lions Club, P.O. Box 1342, Mountainside, 07092.
All contributors will be listed in a program which will be distributed at a special Light-the-Tree ceremony to be held, weather permitting, under the tree at dusk on Saturday, December 5.
Diversity of Acts Slated To Perform at County’s First Jersey Jazz Festival
A diverse mix of acts, ranging from Latin Jazz to Big Band and Jump Blues to Gospel, is slated to appear at Union County’s Jersey Jazz by the Lake Festival, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday, September 12 and 13, at Nomahegan Park in Cranford.
The two-day festival will feature continuous music, food stands with dishes by local restauranteurs and a Kids Kingdom with a children’s stage, rides and arts and crafts. Each afternoon, a colorful Mardi Gras parade will troop through the kids kingdom.
“We want to bring the summer to an end with a big celebration, so we’re bringing great music, food and fun activities for kids to one of Union County’s most beautiful parks,” said Daniel P. Sullivan, Chairman of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
“This will be a celebration of Union County’s energy, our creativity, our parks, our kids and all of the cultural opportunities this county has to offer,” he said.
Headlining the festival is world famous vibraphonist Lionel Hampton. Known as the “King of Vibraphone,” Hampton played backup for Louis Armstrong with the famous Benny Goodman Quartet. He is one of the few living big-band artists who is still touring and recording.
In 1996, President Bill Clinton presented Hampton with the National Medal of the Arts, and this year, Hampton celebrated his 90th birthday at the White House. Hampton will play on Saturday evening.
The music will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with the modern jazz group Positive Rhythmic Force. At 12:15 p.m., vocalist Pat Cisarano will take to the stage. The Nick Rolff Trio, a piano-led jazz group, will hit the stage at 1:30 p.m.
They will be followed by the lively swing/jump blues group, The Crescent City Maulers, at 2:45 p.m. At 4:15 p.m., contemporary jazz musician Cecil Brooks III will take the stage. He will be followed with the sounds of Latin jazz and funk at 5:45 p.m. when Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers take over. Hampton and his Orchestra is scheduled to begin his set at 7:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the Joe Briscoe Gospel Singers will start the day off right at noon with an uplifting, inspirational set. Then, at 12:45 p.m., the Hudson River Rats, a soulful, multifaceted blues band will take the stage.
They will be followed at 2 p.m. by Quartette Indigo with Regina Carter, a string-based jazz group. The New Orleans-style Gully Low Jazz Band with Randy Sandke will take over at 3:30 p.m. And the last band scheduled for the festival is the Bernard Purdie All Stars, who are scheduled to hit the stage at 4:45 p.m.
Beside great music, the festival will feature a Kids’ Kingdom, with a
childrens’ stage showing entertainment designed specifically for kids, including improv acts, theater groups, performers and area musicians. Rides and games will be available throughout the Kids’ Kingdom, as will educational and hands-on activities.
Children’s Specialized Hospital is sponsoring the Kids’ Kingdom.
“We want this to be an event everyone can enjoy,” said Freeholder Sullivan. “This is something families can bring their kids to, no matter what their ages. People can come for the afternoon, or enjoy a meal with the music in the evening.”
Space at the festival will be provided for area restaurants to offer their best dishes, demonstrating the great diversity and quality of the county’s food scene. Tents, tables and chairs will be available throughout the site to provide a place to take a rest from the music and festivities.
The theme to the two-day Jersey Jazz festival is the question “What is Jazz?” In two days of continuous music, performers will approach the question from their unique viewpoints, whether they are singing gospel or playing classical jazz, the blues, swing, Latin or contemporary jazz.
Freeholder Sullivan added that Nomahegan Park, with its lake, shady picnic groves and plenty of open space, is a perfect venue for this event. Each year, hundreds of residents come to arts and crafts festivals featuring artisans, vendors and the county’s young artists at the park, and this event works well there, too.
Nomahegan Park is located near two major highways, not far from bus and rail service by New Jersey Transit and is near ample parking at Union County College.
