CYAN YELLOW MAGENTA BLACK the lower half of the inning with

hurricane-like force. Weber, who reached base on a force play, and Tim Walsh, who singled, both scored when Buchwald belted a double, high off the pole in deep left-center. Johnson walked and Joe Walsh smacked an RBI single past third.

The eye of the storm was about to arrive and the turbulence was at its peak. Danielle addressed the plate and airmailed his lightning bolt tworun triple to the fence in deep, deep right-center field. More fury was still to come. Staeudle blazed a shot which caused the ball and the outfielder to bounce of the left field screen. O’Conner squibbled a single to short and Staeudle scored the seventh run of the inning when the shortstop made a throwing error.

The towel was wet and despite trailing 17-5 in the fifth, Willoughby refused to throw it in. Unfortunately, for Willoughby, all three batters were retired by Cullinane. Danielle flaunted his outstanding defensive skills by making a great, full-speed, running catch in right field.

As the eye of the storm settled over Willoughby, there was an eerie calm as Russell Road passed silently in the bottom of the fifth. While still in the calm; however, Willoughby managed to stir up three runs in the sixth. Cerchio singled to center and Chris Park planted a two-run homer in remote center. McAlindin doubled to left and Scott Gaito yanked an RBI double down the left field line; but when Matt DePalma lined out for the third out,

umpire Bob Brelinsky called the game due to visibility insufficiency. The title belonged to Russell Road and Danielle was named Most Valuable Player of the series.

CULINANE FIRES 4-HITTER, SPLITS 6 RBI WITH ‘BUCH’

Russell Road Rumbles Down Willoughby in Game 1, 10-0

By DAVID B. CORBIN

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Tom Culinane fired a four-hitter and allowed only two walks as Russell Road rumbled over Willoughby Road, 10-0, in the first complete game of the Fanwood Old Men’s Softball Association Championships at La Grande Park in Fanwood on August 25. The road was much bumpier on August 24 when both “Road” teams battled to a 7-7 tie which was called due to darkness and had to be replayed. Culinane and Dave Buchwald both had three RBI to help Russell secure the complete game victory.

The second-seeded Russell Road team revved its engines an zoomed to a 2-0 lead in the first. Don Weber drilled a double to center and Tim Walsh tapped a single past second. Buchwald lofted a long sacrifice fly to center to bring home Weber, then Clint Factor ripped an RBI single up-the-middle.

Culinane allowed a leadoff double to Matt DePalma in the bottom of the first but managed to get the next

three Willoughby batters to ground out to end the inning.

The pumped up Russell Road crew added two more runs in the second. Lou Danielle dazzled the fans when he beat out an infield single, Kurt Staeudle looped a single over short, then Dennis O’Conner loaded the bases with a single to center. The lefthanded Culinane stepped up and sliced a two-run single to left to put Russell in the lead, 4-0.

Culinane was brilliant, mixing his pitches well to throw off the batters. After walking Kevin Sicula, the next

three Willoughby batters were unable to get the ball out of the infield.

Although Buchwald led off the third with a single, Factor walked and Danielle loaded the bases with another single, Russell Road failed to score.

Aside from Culinane’s expert pitching, the well-seasoned Russell Road defense also confused the Willoughby hitters by constantly shifting their defensive positions. On many occasions, Russell would shift one of its outfielders to an infield position. As a result, Danielle who shifted to the infield in the third, initiated a slick second-to-first double play which negated Chris Parks’ sizzling leadoff single.

Russell Road laid tracks all over Willoughby Road with five more runs in the fourth. O’Conner hammered a triple to a remote section of rightcenter field, Culinane lobbed the ball off the glove of the second baseman in shallow right and Cullinane’s courtesy runner scored. Eric Birnbaum

bopped a single over second and Tim Walsh smashed a single to center. Buchwald blasted a two-run double to center and Scott Johnson, who had been terrorizing the cars along the right field line and toying with the right field fence, launched a long RBI sacrifice fly. Finally, Factor ricocheted an RBI double off the left field screen.

Culinane yielded another leadoff single to DePalma but halted the next three batters in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, however, Russell Road grabbed another run to take a 10-0 lead. Straeudle doubled off the

screen in left and scored on Culinane’s bouncing single to right.

All three Willoughby batters flied out in the fifth and Russell came back to threaten in the sixth. Bob Picarski thudded a single to right, then was gunned down after Buchwald singled and the left fielder fired a rifle shot in time to nail him as he slid into third.

Parks hooked a one-out single to left in the sixth for Willoughby and Matt Lembo flied out to right; but, Birnbaum, the Russell second baseman, executed a fabulous running catch in foul territory to retire the side.

In the bottom of the seventh, Willoughby had its last chance and, at least, wanted to avoid a shutout. Joe Smith reached first on an error and Matt Mahoney drew a base-onballs; however, Culinane and the Russell defense were too solid and the shutout was preserved.
