MARKS GETS 4 RBI, HR; HOROWITZ BELTS BIRTHDAY HR
Sizzling C. B. I. Blue Batters Undermanned Club 40, 20-2
By DAVID B. CORBIN
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
Congregation Beth Israel has been red hot and won its fourth game in-arow by battering an undermanned Club 40 team in Jewish Community Center Softball League action at Tamaques Park in Westfield on August 30. Marty Marks man-handled a two-run homer and knocked in four runs and “Birthday Boy” Joel Horowitz happily hammered a threerun homer to help ruin Club 40’s day.
CBI’s Larry Sanders, who reached base on a force play, moved to second when John Alpert reached first on an
error, then scored off Marks single to left in the top of the first. Jason Weisholtz hooked an RBI single over short and Andrew Port hit an RBI sacrifice fly to right field. Howie Queller whizzed a single over third, Ben Levoy reached first on a throwing error as Weisholtz scored and Gerry Kirschenbaum bombed a twoRBI single to right. Allan Gross gave CBI a 7-0 lead by looping an RBI single to shallow left field.
In the bottom of the first, Club 40 went rather silently. Only Jay Tepper
tapped a single. CBI answered meekly in the top of the second with only singles from Steve Schwartz and Sanders; however, Club 40 scored a run in the lower half of the second. Allen Dubinsky singled to left and later scored when Doug Gincel drilled a shot off the right fielder’s glove.
Port, Queller and Kirschenbaum all singled for CBI in the third but a great throw by Club 40 shortstop Gincel to catcher Steve Weinstein nailed Port at the plate and prevented any runs from being scored. However, Club 40 added its second run in the bottom of the third when Steve Rosenberg blasted a solo home run to center. Tepper and Ken Simon added singles later in the inning but were unable to score.
The CBI Blue bats began to sizzle in the fourth. Gross sliced a slick double to left and Horowitz walked. Steve Schwartz reached first on a force out and Doug Schwartz singled up-themiddle as Horowitz scored. Sanders chopped an RBI single past short to give CBI a 9-2 lead, but Doug Schwartz was thrown out sliding into third and Alpert flied out for the third out.
Dubinsky had a leadoff single for Club 40 in the fourth, but was later forced out at second. With Weinberg on first, Gincel drilled a hot grounder near second, but CBI shortstop Weisholtz made a brilliant snag of the ball, stepped on second and fired the ball to first for the double play.

With flames still clinging to their bats the CBI hitters burned Club 40 for three more runs in the fifth. Marks lobbed a leadoff double over third, Weisholtz slicked an RBI triple to deep left. Port grounded out to short to bring home Weisholtz, Queller walked, Ben Levoy reached on a force out, then Kirschenbaum bopped an RBI single to right.
Rosenberg managed a single in the fifth for Club 40 and CBI was silenced in the sixth when shortstop Gincel made a marvelous catch to end the inning. All three Club 40 batters went down in the bottom of the sixth.
Both teams continued their naps in the seventh, but CBI awakened violently with eight runs in the eighth. Port ripped a single off the glove of the right fielder, Queller poked a single to center and Levoy walked to load the bases. Kirschenbaum got his fourth RBI by hitting a sacrifice fly to left. Gross coolly placed an RBI double in a vacant spot in left, then Horowitz pummeled his three-Run homer past the left fielder. Doug Schwartz slapped a single past second, Sanders’ pop up eluded the shortstop, then Marks launched his three-run homer to “Never, Never Land” well beyond the left fielders’ imagination.
Club 40 desired to awaken from its nightmare, but when it did, CBI had won the game, 20-2, and upped its record to 7-5.

J B’s Softball Team Wins Middlesex County Title
Bernie Gautier snapped a 4-4 tie with a three run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Rick Prench’s three run homer in the sixth inning led J B’s of Westfield, over Creative Enterprises of Carteret, 24-12 in the championship game of the Middlesex
County Slo-Pitch Summer League. J B’s captured three playoff series games to earn the league title for the third time in six years. J B’s defeated Torpedo’s of Linden in the one-game elimination, 27-4. Ben Maranzano’s four hits and two long, two-run homers paced the attack. Chuck Ford, Steve Lopez, and Bernie Gautier each score in the bottom of the inning. After Marchelitis made a marvelous diving play at short for St. Anne in the top of the fourth, St. Patrick revived itself and added two more runs. Kelly Larson lobbed a single over the second baseman’s head, then Esposito thumped his two-run homer over the right fielder’s head.
St. Patrick struck for two more lightning bolts in the fifth to take a 13-3 lead. Laskowski lined a single past third, Rezza rippled a single by second and Kucin knocked a single to center. Mike Hayeck hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Laskowski
and Rezza scored on Citera’s grounder to third.
After a period of silence, St. Anne answered in the bottom of the sixth. Frank Del Re walked, Ron Del Prete blazed a single to center and Al Weber whacked an RBI single to left. Joe McEvoy made the score, 13-5, with an RBI single over first base.
Still pumped up, St. Patrick added another run in the seventh. Laskowski laced his fourth hit of the evening, Luongo poked a single to left and Rezza sacrificed to center to bring home Laskowski. St. Anne center fielder Ferro made a beautiful catch to limit Rezza’s shot to only a sacrifice.
The victory advanced St. Patrick to play St. Louis on August 31 at Jerseyland Field in Scotch Plains.
