F-SPY Piranhas Devour Gingerbread Competition

Competing against 250 swimmers from 18 New Jersey teams, the strength and depth of this year’s Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA U-8 swim team was unveiled at the U. S. S. Gingerbread Mini Meet held at the Ridgewood YMCA on November 8. Both veterans and newcomers turned in exceptional performances. Several swimmers, notably eight-yearolds Gordon Peeler, Megan Gaynor, Catherine Maguire, Elizabeth Hawkins and seven-year-olds Jonathan Kosenick and Matt Morgan, were impressive in earning multiple awards.

Peeler led the list of outstanding swims by winning both the 50-yard backstroke and 25-yard butterfly. Kosenick captured fifth place in the 25-yard backstroke and sixth in the 25-yard butterfly while Morgan brought home a pair of seventh-place finishes in the 25-yard freestyle and 25-yard butterfly events.

On the girls side, Gaynor seized second in the 50-yard breast stroke and third in the 25-yard butterfly. Hawkins earned second in the 50yard backstroke, sixth in the 100yard individual medley and seventh in the 50-yard freestyle. Maguire swam a couple of particularly strong races in snaring fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke and sixth place in the 50-yard backstroke.

Other swimmers put in spectacular performances and showed why the Piranhas have tremendous depth. In the eight-year-old category, Erin Rossi captured fourth place in the 25-yard breaststroke, Alyssa Maurer took eighth in the 50-yard breaststroke, Leah Farrante finished 12th in the 25yard-freestyle and Catherine Harley placed 15th in the 50-yard freestyle.

Emily O’Halloran led a group of seven-year-olds with a 10th in the 25-yard butterfly and an 11th in the 25-yard freestyle. Kimberly Many captured 12th in the 25-yard backstroke and Tori Ferrante also swan an outstanding race in finishing 12th in the 25-yard freestyle.

The six-year-old girls also got into the act with Anne Maguire finishing 10th in the 25-yard freestyle and Kara Gaynor grabbing 11th in the 25-yard backstroke.

The meet was a great opportunity for swimmers to gain invaluable experience as the Piranhas head into the upcoming dual meet season and onto next Spring’s State Championships. Alina Chabus, Kimberly Kliesch, Kaitlin McGeehan, Sean Dolgin and Collyn O’Kane had major breakthroughs in their events with personal best times and their continued improvement will contribute to a team that the competition has learned to fear a team with a big bite.

SP-F U-9 Strikers Tie Westfield Vipers, 2-2

The rematch between the SP-F Strikers and the Westfield Vipers lived up to expectations with both teams playing all out. It didn’t take long for things to happen with end-to-end runs from each team.

Striker defenders Ryan Krueger and Tommy Sutter repelled the first waves of the Vipers’ attacks. However, Westfield was persistent and drew a foul in the Strikers’ box for a penalty kick. The Viper forward placed a perfect kick a couple of inches off the ground inside the left goal post to give Westfield a 1-0 lead.

The Strikers worked hard in the second quarter with midfielders Taylor Molinaro, Tyler Stanek and Timmy Stuart playing the ball into Westfield’s half of the field.

During the third quarter, neither the Strikers or the Vipers let down. The action was furious. Striker midfielder Timmy Leischner drove a blistering shot from the top of Westfield’s box just wide of the right goal post for a near miss. The Strikers defense had little rest from the strong Westfield forwards. Striker defenders Daniel LiVolsi and Brandon Reddington were ready for the challenge tackling and clearing the ball from the midfield into Westfield’s back third of the field.

The game grew even more intense with the Strikers down by one goal in the fourth quarter. The Strikers continued to press and capitalized on an indirect kick in the Westfield back third when Striker forward Michael DeVizio struck a beautiful ball from the right side to the left side of the Westfield goal box at the six-yard mark for midfielder Jeff Stuart to beat the Viper goalkeeper making the match even at 1-1.

The Vipers weren’t phased by the Strikers’ goal and fought back with even greater determination. Midway through the fourth quarter deep in the Striker’s end, the Viper’s crossed the ball from the right side to the left in front of the Strikers’ goal to their forward, who finished the play putting Westfield ahead, 2-1.

With time running out the Strikers didn’t loose heart and made the big play. Striker midfielder Robby Cunningham served a long through ball to forward Eddie Kahn who raced between the Westfield defenders to beat the oncoming Viper goalkeeper to the ball. Kahn chipped the ball over the keepers head and into the goal to tie the game, 2-2.

The final two minutes of the game went scoreless and the score remained the same..

Killer Bees Clinch Crown; Wreck U-12 Firebirds 1-0

The Westfield Killer Bees U-12 girls traveling soccer team wrecked their nemesis the Hillsborough Firebirds, 1-0, on November 15. In four previous meetings the Bees had failed to score a single goal; however, from the first whistle the Bees mounted a strong offensive attack.

The Bees moved quickly to reach most balls first and they switched fields to keep the Firebirds’ defense off balance. On the left, halfback Jenna Federgreen and wing Stephanie Bridgeman, the best left side offense in the league, displayed their talents by consistently beating the Firebirds defenders with quick moves, solid forward passes and well-played back passes. On the right, halfback Lauren Purdy and wing Caroline Cariste used quick turns and passes up the sidelines to reach the 18 yard box.

From both sides, the wings sent many crosses into the goal area. Center forward Melissa Rosen was well positioned for the crosses, but as luck would have it, her shots were stopped by the keeper. At center half, and later at sweeper, Gio Palatucci used excellent positioning to quickly reach and control nearly every ball in the midfield and then pass it to the forwards.

The Killer Bees exceptional defense, fullbacks Emily MacNeil, Marykate Maher, Sarah Hansen, Amanda Dickson and Justine Palme, efficiently turned Hillsborough’s offensive efforts back into Westfield offensive plays. Of special note was Jessie Elkoury, who played sweeper and centerhalf, sent several beautiful

long passes up to the forwards. Finally, with the first half nearly over, the Bees scored on an unusual play. Palme, rather than throwing in the ball along the sidelines, made a long throw to Purdy, who spun toward the goal and made a perfectly timed one-touch kick to lift the ball over the keeper and into the net, giving Westfield a 1-0 lead.

During the second half, the Firebirds tried to find a weakness in the Bees defense. Pressing the attack near the Westfield goal, they brought up a fullback to form a four person offense. Stoppers Annie Onishi and Hansen and along with Palatucci and MacNeil successfully blunted most Firebird attacks.

The Bees continued to sting the Firebird’s defense by moving the ball up the sidelines as Onishi, Jessica Schor, Aly Carter and Ann Siwulec worked with Dickson, Palatucci, Purdy and Rosen.

One of the Bees’ closest scoring opportunities occurred late in the game, Bridgeman lofted a perfect cross to dead center in front of the goal and Purdy headed the ball toward the goal, but the ball sailed just over the crossbar.

Goalies Elkoury and Onishi have teamed up for an amazing eight shutouts. The victory improved the Bees fall record to 5-1-3 and guarantees them the flight championship.

SPF U-10 Azurri Shoots Down Shooting Stars Girls, 5-1

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood U10 Girls Azurri maintained first place in its flight and a perfect 8-0 record win a 5-1 win over the Hillsborough Shooting Stars.

Striker Colleen LaForge connected quickly with a slashing low ball past the goalie in the first five minutes of the match. She repeated five minutes later with a ball struck perfectly from the left side over the keeper’s outstretched hands.

The third goal came from Emily Meehan who collected a nice pass from Allie Hambleton. Meehan had streaked down the right side and made a nice move with the ball.

The defense made it easy for the Strikers with fine play by Lauren Weissbrod at sweeper and Samantha Buteas, Linda Missal, and Brittany Larkin in midfield who defused any Shooting Star threat and quickly played the ball upfield.

The Azurri struck again as Amanda Makowski scored from left halfback

as she sidestepped left and shot right to surprise the keeper.

Hillsborough scored its lone goal on a penalty kick before halftime. Allison Zazzali tapped in the final Azurri tally off a beautiful cross from Makowski. Liz Halpin had started the play win a pass to Makowski. The Azurri then ran out the match with its tight ball control style with great play by midfielders Maggie McLaughlin and Molly Meehan.
