FOOTBALL STAR…New York Jets tight end No. 82, Blake Spence, recently addressed students at Edison Intermediate School in Westfield about commitment to academics. He encouraged students to take their work seriously, set high goals, and listen to their teachers. The football star was sponsored by the Star Ledger program, “Newspapers in Education,” which will provide newspapers for classroom use and lessons, as well as workshops for staff members.

All of the participants were able to use the highly advantageous spring mats which most of the South Jersey schools have been using for years. Unfortunately, most of the North Jersey schools have not been afforded the luxury of using them.
“She did a double back flip on the floor,” said Kovac of Hogan’s floor routine. “It was gorgeous! She had much more amplitude.”
Hogan also had a 9.2 on the vault using her impressive Tsukahara with a pike landing. On the beam, she hit her routine well and scored an 8.65 and on the unevens, she scored an 8.95.
“It was by far her best meet of the season,” Kovac added.
Jessica Caravello had a fine all around score of 35.075 with scores of
9.05 on the floor, 8.75 on the unevens, 8.85 in the vault and an 8.425 on the balance beam.
“I am very pleased. The girls accounted for themselves very, very well this year,” concluded Kovac.

Blue Devil Gymnasts Finish Fourth in State Tournament
Westfield PAL ‘C’ Stumbles; Falls in Perth Amboy, 13-7
Balmy temperatures and bright sunshine followed the Westfield PAL “C” team to Perth Amboy, but despite gritty offensive and defensive performances they were unable to defeat the pesky Red Raiders.
The Blue Devils offensive unit came on strong led by Terron Rogers, Charles Johnson, John Boyd and Tommy DelDucca. Seven plays later, the Blue Devils were forced to punt. Matt Perrilli booted the ball downfield.
Key defensive plays by Pierce Gaynor and Peter Curiale kept the Red Raiders off the board in their first series of downs. The deadlock was short-lived, however, when
DelDucca’s block sprung Johnson for an 88-yard touchdown run. Fred Cooper’s conversion was successful; the Blue Devils led 7-0.
In their next drive, Perth Amboy answered with a 46-yard touchdown run. Westfield’s defense led by Nick DeRosa, Stephen Rizzetta, Eric Scrudato, Stanton Sturgis, Sean Young and Matt Risberg smothered the conversion attempt. The score stood 7-6.
Despite consistent runs by Kevin Behr and John Boyd and heads up play by Joe Buontempo and Ryan Torcicollo, the Blue Devils were unable to pad the score and carried a 76 lead into the half.
The third quarter was head-to-head combat with neither team posing a scoring threat. Late in the second half, the Red Raiders found a chink in the blue wall and broke for a touchdown. This time, their conversion was successful.
Time ran out before the Blue Devils could avenge the touchdown. Perth Amboy walked away with a 13-7 victory. The Westfield “C” team’s record slipped to 6-3.
Westfield PAL ‘B’ Hammers PAL Red Raiders, 20-0
Westfield’s PAL “B” team stretched its unbeaten season by rolling over Perth Amboy, 20-0, nullifying the Red Raider’s home field advantage.
Despite gritty offensive performances by Jan Cocozziello, Eric Hayes and Richard Brautigam, the Blue Devils did not score until the end of the first quarter when Kirt Giresi broke loose for a 46-yard touchdown run courtesy of key blocks and tackles by Adam Trzesniowski, David Hewit, Brian Bigelow, Brandon Pantano and Montell Glasco. The point after touchdown failed, but the Blue Devils were on the board 6-0.
Two plays later, the suffocating Westfield defensive unit forced a Red Raider fumble which was recovered
by Brad Trzesniowski. Cocozziello lined Tommy Roche in his sights and fired for the touchdown. Andrew Garrison’s kick was good and the Blue Devils increased their lead to 13-0.
Perth Amboy tried in vain but were unable to penetrate the Westfield line anchored by Terrance Bryant. Blue Devils Marc Dowling and Keith Zemsky ground out Blue Devil gains, but the clock ran out before they could capitalize. The halftime score stood 13-0.
In the first defensive series of the second half, Blue Devils Michael O’Connor and Zemsky teamed up to halt the Red Raiders in their tracks. So successful were the blue linemen that they forced another Perth Amboy fumble which Dowling scooped up. Unable to turn the recovery to their advantage despite the efforts of Alex Regenstreich and Zemsky, the Blue Devils punted. Key plays by Joe Wisniewski, Chris Witkowski, Tyshon Blackmon, and Neil Kroncke held the Red Raiders at bay.
Westfield came on strong in the final quarter. In their first possession, Westfield blockers Mark Harbaugh, Wisniewski and Witkowski enabled Cocozziello to fire a touchdown bomb to Giresi. Garrison’s kick brought the Blue Devils score to 20.
As a last gasp, Perth Amboy took possession at the 35-yard line. Sherif Kamel, Andrew Schafer and Zemsky were instrumental in halting their progress. The clock ran down and Westfield won, 20-0.

Devil Vballers
The Westfield High School girls volleyball team gave second-ranked Demarest a run for their money in the first round of the Group 3 state tournament in Demarest on November 12. Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, ace Kelly Martens came on strong to notch 13 kills, three aces and a block to rally Demarest to a 16-14, 15-5, victory.
At one time, the Blue Devils held a 9-0 lead in the first game and got one ace each from Melanie Paige and Breigh Ann Menza. During that run, Monique Brendel and Sandy Rhein had two kills each. Brendel finished with five kills.
Westfield lowered to 11-10 while Demarest boosted its record to 18-5.
Devil Girls Place Sixth in X-C Meet
The Westfield High School girls cross country team placed sixth with 223 points in the Group 3 State Championships held in Holmdel on November 14. Middletown South won with a total of 48, North Hunterdon placed second at 65 and Ocean Township came in third at 118.

Westfield PAL ‘D’ Punishes Perth Amboy PAL, 19-7
The Westfield Police Athletic League’s “D” football team continued to play like champions by winning their fourth in a row and improving their record to 6-2 with an awesome 19-7 victory over Perth Amboy.
Westfield’s offense flew out of the gate with an impressive eight-play scoring drive. Quarterback Mark Boyd led the way with a bootleg right for a 27-yard gain, then three plays later, a 34-yard bootleg left for the touchdown. Andrew Petrsoric, Scott Wailer, J. T. Sheehan and Sean Sullivan put on a blocking clinic as they dominated the line of scrimmage. The failed extra point attempt kept the score at 6-0.
The Blue Devil defense responded to the challenge, holding the Red Raiders’ to one series. Later, the Red Raiders tested Westfield’s will with a 13-play marathon that resulted in a 60-yard drive without a score.
Matt Shaffer led the way with three tackles including one that saved a touchdown. Richard Delaney, Max Listinsky, Will Uhr and Patrick Stanley contained the potent Perth Amboy offense by refusing to give up the big play. Mike McCrea and Matt Ince finished off the threat by making the clutch tackles on third and fourth down, and goal to go.
Westfield’s stand out running back Mike Venezia rubbed salt in Perth Amboy’s wound by making them pay in a hurry for their offensive failure. On the third play, after it appeared
that he had been gang tackled, Venezia broke free and sprinted for a 59-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt failed and the lead increased to 12-0.
The Red Raiders started the second half with total frustration. Ryan Salmon and Chris Sailors stuffed the first two run attempts and Sean Mack, John Dugan, Scott Dyer and Nicholas Delpopolo finished the job by forcing four and out. Perth Amboy’s second possession was no more successful at solving the Blue Devil defensive riddle thanks to stand out tackles by Ryan Brand and Santo Nardi.
When the Westfield offense took the field Venezia once again had the Red Raider coaching staff reaching for the Rolaids. Venezia broke off an unbelievable 65-yard touchdown run through a huge hole created by Pat Hughes, Petrsoric and Waller. Boyd added the extra point with a sweep to his right for a 19-0 lead.
Perth Amboy finally managed a quick score to pull back to 19-7, but the clock was becoming Westfield’s best friend. The offense led by the rushing of Joey Simone, John Gagliano, Thomas Moore and William Harbaugh came through with critical first downs while Charlie Read and Arrend Santiago made the clutch defensive tackles as Perth Amboy helplessly watched the precious seconds tick off the clock to ice the Blue Devil victory.

Cranford Destroyers Blitz S P-F U-11 Jazz Girls, 4-2
Despite a stirring second-half comeback, the Scotch PlainsFanwood Jazz girls U-11 soccer team suffered a 4-2 loss against the Cranford Destroyers at Unami Park last on November 15.
Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Jazz finally got in tune as they staged a ferocious counterattack against the Destroyers. Becca McGuire got things going as she stole a ball along the sideline and sent a pass up the left wing to Gaby Falco, who dodged a defender and darted up the left side until she found Lauren Mains with a perfect pass. Mains used teammate Loni Kaye as a screen and fired a wicked shot that zipped by the Cranford goalie.
Minutes later, Mains intercepted a goal kick by Cranford and nailed goal number two for the Jazz.
It appeared the Jazz were going to break into the lead as Gaby Falco
broke ahead of the field on the left side and passed to Shannon Hauser directly in front of the goal, but the alert Destroyer goalkeeper popped out to cut down the angle and Hauser’s shot went just wide.
Earlier in the game, the Jazz had missed on another scoring opportunity when Hallie Mintz stole a ball in the middle of the field and found Lauren Hercel with a pass. Hercel swooped in on goal and booted a high shoot that was somehow knocked away by the Cranford goalie. Then a subsequent scramble in front of the goal produced a huge cloud of dust but no goal for the Jazz.
Late in the game, the Destroyers finally broke down the Jazz defenders, and despite two solid saves by Maddie Wasser, Cranford scored two goals and sealed the victory.

SP-F Express Tops Bridgewater, 2-1
The SP-F U-11 Express continued their quest for a flight championship with a 2-1 victory over Bridgewater last on November 15. The Express struck early when Mark Ciecura launched a corner kick across the front of the goal and Joseph Jacobi, on a designed play, charged in and converted.
Bridgewater never seriously threatened for the rest of the half against Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s smothering defense, but the lead remained a precarious single goal until midway in the second half when Ciecura led Ryan Cerrick on a breakaway down the middle. The Bridgewater goalie came out to challenge, but Cerrick powered it through his outstretched arms for the goal.
Bridgewater tacked on a goal with seconds left to play to close the gap to 2-1. Jack Davis and Brian Halpin continued to work well together in pressuring the left side, and Clayton Balch and Sean Young turned in strong performances at center halfback and sweeper, respectively.
