CYAN YELLOW MAGENTA BLACK The Westfield Wrestling League,
which begins its 38th season, announced sign-ups for first through sixth graders. Newcomers and experienced wrestlers are welcome to learn this exciting and challenging sport! The League’s objectives are to provide instruction from basic to advanced wrestling techniques, improve physical conditioning and promote competition in matches.
Last year, Westfield wrestlers had an outstanding season with numerous medal winners and champions in several regional tournaments and a State Champion. Last year’s instructional division experienced a good deal of success in matches with other towns and in novice tournaments. Several of those wrestlers are ready to move up into the traveling division.
A season-opening clinic will be held in late November to help evaluate wrestlers and place them in either the instructional or traveling team division.
Instructional Division:
This division is for kids in grades 1-6 who have little or no wrestling experience. They will learn basic wrestling rules and be introduced to the sport in an instructional/recre
ational format. Wrestlers are matched by age, weight, and ability. Practices are held one evening a week at Westfield High School. Matches are scheduled with other recreation programs and novice tournaments are available.
Traveling Division:
This division is for wrestlers in grades 3-6 who have qualified on the basis of competitive try-outs. The Traveling Team (Little Devils) competes against other teams from neighboring towns in the “Central Jersey Wrestling League”.
Practices are held twice a week and all home matches are at Westfield High School. Optional tournaments are available during the season and league and state tournaments continue through mid-March.
Sign-ups: When: Tuesday November 17 and Wednesday November 18, 7:008:15 p.m. at Westfield High School wrestling gym Fee: $60.00 (includes instruction, matches, and Tshirt) Traveling Team requires an additional $20.00 fee for USA Wrestling card Additional information is available by contacting Dave Hewit at 789-0310.
Westfield PAL ‘D’ Dominates Hanover Footballers, 20-7
The Westfield Police Athletic League’s “D” football team extended their winning streak to 3 games and improved their record to 5-2 with an impressive 20-7 victory over Hanover on November 8.
Westfield dominated on both sides of the ball from the games opening whistle. The defense led by great tackles from Nicholas Delpopolo, Santo Nardi and Charlie Read along with the aggressive play of Alex Falk and Will Uhr gave Hanover an early wake-up call by forcing four-and-out on the Tiger’s first two possessions.
The Westfield offense, which had come alive in last weeks game, flew out of the gate smoking. On the first play from scrimmage Michael Venizia broke off one of his trademark 60-yard touchdown runs when he cut through a hole broken wide open on the left side of the line by Zachary Deegan, Sean Sullivan and Sam Crawford. Westfield extended their lead to 7 to 0 when quarterback Mark Boyd ran around left giving a pair of Hanover defenders a quick shakeand-bake for the extra point.
Westfield’s second possession of the game didn’t last any longer than the first, but it had the same incredible result. William Harbaugh took a hand off from quarterback Chris Sailors on the first play and broke through a hole on the right side of the line created by Nicholas Fusaro and I. T. Sheehan and scampered 60 yards for the touchdown.
The extra point failed, but Westfield had a 13-0 lead before the first quarter had expired.
The Tiger offense was frustrated by their inability to find a weakness in the Westfield defense. Nardi feasted on Hanover running backs making five tackles during Hanover’s first four possessions. Sean Mack, Michael Wikander, Mike McCrea and Scott Newman helped build a wall that held Hanover to only one first down in the half.
The Blue Devils opened up the second half with another quick strike. Sean Ferro led the way with an incredible open field run behind the blocking of Pat Hughes and Scott Waller. The drive featured an exceptionally well executed counter trap that Richard Delaney turned into a 41-yard touchdown run thanks to the blocking of Anthony Arnold and Andrew Petrsoric. The extra point came via the air when Boyd rolled right and fired a bullet to Ryan Brand who caught the ball in heavy traffic to make the score 20-0.
Hanover ended their draught in the fourth quarter to make the score 20-7. However, Westfield’s offense responded by eating up the clock with a patient drive to eliminate any chance of Hanover getting back into the game. Thomas Moore, John Gagliano and Steven Bigelow led the effort to put Hanover out of their misery.
Westfield’s next game will be at Perth Amboy on November 15th. Moser in the center. From there,
Moser zipped the ball past Soto and into the net for the only score.
With the seemingly omnipresent nature of Moser, Raider Head Coach Tom Breznitsky pointed out, “Moser doesn’t have a regular position per say. In this game he played sweeper, then later he was moved up for a possible score.” Breznitsky added, “And the strategy worked.”
In the Union County Championship, the Raiders pulled a bit of a shift on the Cougars. Moser, who was considered by the Cranford coaches to be playing as a sweeper, took on the role of striker and was quite effective. Jeff Fiorino was sidelined with a foot injury and Peter Kobliska took on the responsibility as stopper.
“It was a methodical move to outfox Cranford,” explained Breznitsky. “It was purposely done to grab an early goal and to set the tone of the game. We did not want to keep them in the game.”
For the first five minutes, possession of the ball was alternated, but minutes later, Eugene Ferrara slanted a shot toward the box. Moser sped down the left side and deflected the ball off his chest. From about sevenyards out, Moser out-maneuvered a
fullback and kneed the ball from leftto-right into the net with 30:56 left in the first half.
With the exception of a few occasions, the Raiders continued to control the ball for the next 15 minutes. Zotti fired a shot over the crossbar, then Moser sent Cougar goalie Gennaro Somma diving to the ground to stop another shot.
A really slick play came with 15:21 left in the half when Zotti controlled the ball from the left corner, moved the ball along the line toward the Cougar goal, then slanted the ball into the far right side of the net to increase the Raider lead to 2-0.
Throughout the game, the Raider defense kept any Cougar attack away from the middle, thus preventing any serious shots on goal. Lowyns had three saves as the Raiders elevated their record to 20-2-1.
“Kobliska stayed in and stopped. He did a good job anticipating Cranford’s moves,” mentioned Breznitsky. “He stepped up and did the job.”

ALEX LEE HAMMERS TWO GOALS
Blue Devils Bombard Morristown Girls, 6-1
By DAVID B. CORBIN
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
Sophomore forward Kerri Anness scored the first goal of the game and Alex Lee provided two more in the second half as the fourth-seeded Westfield High School girls soccer team wore down fifth-seeded Morristown, 6-1, in the quarterfinals of the North 2, Group 3 State Tournament in Westfield on November 5. The victory advanced the Blue Devils to play the first-seeded Cougars in Cranford on November 10.
Anness scored 11 minutes into the game off a feed from sophomore Elisa Cognetti, but offensively Morristown came roaring back. Several shots were taken on goal; however, sophomore goalie Michelle Meglaughlin managed to stop every shot which came
her way. In one instance, junior back Val Griffeth alertly booted a potential Morristown score away from a vacant area of the Blue Devil goal.
Even though the Blue Devils held a 1-0 lead, Morristown took offensive control early in the second half. A Morristown kick went whizzing over the Devil crossbar and moments later, Meglaughlin made another save; however, offensive dominance would soon fall into the feet of the Blue Devils.
Sophomore halfback Gwyn Lederman drilled a right-footed shot from the left side into the upper left side of the net to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead with 21:54 left in the game.
The game got a bit more physical as Morristown desperately mulled its way down field. Senior back Liza Yannuzzi stuck up for her rights to notify Morristown that mulling could work both ways and the game soon settled down.
The Blue Devils caught the Morristown defense out of position and only the goalie was within 30

yards of the goal. Standing about 25 yards out, senior back Andrea Constandis, on the right side, forced the goalie to charge her. Just as the goalie came to within eight yards of her, she patiently popped the ball over her head and watched it roll over the goal. With 19:53 remaining, the Blue Devils jumped the lead to 3-0.
With 16:57 left, junior halfback Donna Schaller bounced a shot off the goalie’s chest, then quickly charged the loose ball and ripped it into the net from point-blank range for the fourth goal.
Morristown put on a surge and moved the ball toward the Blue Devil goal. A shot zinged toward the goal, but fullback Leigh Kendrick headed the ball out of harms’ way.
The threat was short-lived and the Blue Devils gushed past the Morristown defenders. With 8:05 remaining, Lee slanted a four-yard shot on a pass from senior Megan Shutts, from right to left, into the netting to put the Blue Devils ahead, 5-0.
With 2:20 remaining, Shutts fed Lee again and the result was another score. With 1:44 left, Morristown got its only score when Kate DeMaio headed a corner kick into the upper left side of the net.
Westfield elevated its record to 134-2 while Morristown fell to 13-6.

SP-F Striker Boys Blast Millburn Blast Boys, 2-1
The SPF Strikers defeated the Millburn Blast 2-1 on November 1. The Strikers dominated the Blast in their second face-off this season.
Within minutes, Timmy Leischner led the way as he rocked a shot that was blocked by the Millburn goalie. The Blast responded but were thwarted by a great defensive effort by Tommy Sutter.
The Strikers regained the offensive as Eddie Kahn attempted to score with a strong shot on goal. Jeff Stuart fed the ball to Tyler Stanek who made a great kick to score and make it 1-0 Strikers.
Again, the Blast tried to score but were stopped when Rob Cunningham blocked a Millburn corner kick and regained the Striker offensive.
In the second quarter, Michael DeVizio displayed skilled footwork as he moved past three defenders to shoot onto the Millburn goal. Taylor
Molinaro followed with another attempt only to be blocked. The Strikers continued to make several shots on goal prior to the end of the half.
In the third quarter, the Strikers resumed the attack. Daniel LiVolsi smashed an indirect kick that was just blocked by the Blast goalie. The Strikers displayed great teamwork as Tim Stuart fed the ball to Brandon Reddington who passed to Ryan Krueger for a great shot on the Blast goal.
In the fourth quarter, the Blast tied the game 1-1 and mounted an all out attack on the Strikers. Goalie Brandon Reddington made a tremendous save to hold the score to 1-1. With two minutes remaining, the Strikers mustered another attack with Stanek scoring to secure the win 2-1.
The Strikers displayed great focus and it was a great way for Reddington to celebrate his birthday.
Westfield PAL ‘C’ Unseats Montclair Mounties, 7-0
The Westfield PAL “C” team ground out a decisive, 7-0, victory on November 8 over the Montclair Mounties in Montclair.
At the start of the game, the Mounties elected to receive the ball. On the second play of the game, the Blue Devils’ formidable defense forced a fumble which was scooped up by Darrell Hopkins. Unfortunately, Westfield was unable to capitalize and score.
The Mounties lined up seeking to avenge the fumble, but they underestimated the Blue Devils’ blue wall spearheaded by Craig Hewit, Cowles Stewart, Tommy DelDucca, Thomas Meylor, Bobby Mroz Stanton Sturgis and Jon Herttua. Four plays later the Mounties punted the ball.
Charles Johnson, on a reverse, pounded out a solid 20 yards to secure a Westfield first down. The Blue Devils charged down the field with strong
runs by DelDucca, Fred Cooper and quarterback John Boyd. Key blocks by James Hoban, Kevin McCool and Corey Miller set the stage for Johnson’s 35-yard run into the end zone. Boyd’s conversion run was good and the Blue Devils led, 7-0.
The Mounties appeared poised to attack, but Westfield’s defense hung tough, forcing a fumble which Herttua recovered. Westfield’s offensive drive was circumvented by the end of the half.
The third quarter belonged to Westfield’s swarming defensive unit led by Westly Waller, Matt Perrelli, Matt Risberg and Stephen Rizzetta which held Montclair scoreless. Despite strong offensive performances in the second half by Johnson, Terron Rogers, Fred Cooper and Ryan Torcicollo the Blue Devils failed to score, but the Blue Devils held on for the win. The “C” upped its record to 5-2.

The St. Benedict’s Prep boys soccer team showed why it has been ranked as the top high school team in the United States by stinging the Scotch Plains-Fanwood boys, 3-0, in Union on November 4. The Gray Bees swarmed around the Raiders late in the first half and scored all three of their goals within a sixminute period.
The Raiders’ best scoring opportunity came early in the first half when senior Ryan Hahner broke down the right side and fired a shot from 15 yards out, but Bees goalie Carmelo Senzano made a great sliding block.
Gray Bee Cesar Cueller had a shot headed away by Raider Todd Moser. Bee Ismoney Cunha came to the ball and booted it back to Cueller who then punched it into the net for the first score with 8:31 left in the half.
A few minutes later, Cueller headed in a cross from teammate Jordan Quinn to up the score to 2-0. Then, with 2:50 remaining in the half, Quinn scored from six yards out.
