DEVILS TIE RANDOLPH, PISCATAWAY

Blue Devil Girls Defeat W. Morris in Sectionals

By SARA BURNETT

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

The Westfield High School Blue Devil field hockey team boosted their record to 12-3-5, with a key, 3-0, win over West Morris on November 6 in Westfield. The victory propelled them into the second round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 tournament. Earlier, on November 2, the Blue Devils tied Randolph and on November 4, they tied Piscataway.

Westfield fought Randolph to a scoreless 0-0 tie in Randolph. The Blue Devils shell-shocked the Randolph goalie but were unable to hit ground zero. The Blue Devils also dominated with a 10-1 advantage in

penalty corner shots. Randolph did not have one legitimate shot on goal.

Next, the Blue Devils dueled to a 00 stalemate with Piscataway. The Blue Devils did most of the attacking, but the Chiefs managed to keep the ball out of their goal. The Blue Devils held a 10-2 advantage in shots. Chief goalie Jessica Guarneri had 10 saves. Blue Devil goalie Jennifer Woodbury gained her 10th shutout of the season. Westfield shifted to 11-35 while Piscataway shifted to 15-3-3.

The Blue Devils picked up the pace when they faced West Morris in the first round of the state sectionals. As the top-seeded team, Westfield hosted the event. Blue Devil Kelsey Ill

A REAL TRUE BLUE DEVIL FAN…Westfield resident Harry Graves graduated from Westfield High School in 1940 and has attended almost every Blue Devil home game since World War II. tinued their drive. Punishing runs by Lee, Dowling and Kevin McCormack placed the ball deep into Kardinal territory as the quarter ended. The Kardinals held and regained possession, but highly impressive tackles by Dowling and Matt Krug on the running game forced the Kardinals to go to the air once again. When they did, Lee intercepted at the 33 and returned the ball to the 26.

Dowling sledgehammered his way to the 18, then crunched to the 12. One play later, with 7:48 left in the half, Dowling took the ball from the three and exploded in for the touchdown. The score was upped to 14-0 with the extra point.

Strong tackling by Perez, Sergio Villafane and Dowling forced the Kardinals to take flight. Turner made a diving interception at the 33 and skid to the 30. On first down, McCormack lashed left for 13 yards. Turner sliced to the 11, then Dowling thrashed to the four. With 5:20 remaining in the half, a great block by guard Will Hannis gave Turner an easy glide into the endzone. The score remained, 200, when the kick failed.

The Kardinals moved the ball into Blue Devil territory, but Dowling intercepted at the 43 and returned the

ball to the Kardinal two. Lee smashed to the one, then barreled into the endzone to make the score, 26-0, with 1:46 left in the half. The extra point made the score 27-0.

The Blue Devils were not about to have mercy on the Kardinals and continued to clip their wings in the third quarter. Turner took the opening kickoff at the 29 and flew 71 yards for the touchdown with only :15 off the clock. Doerr’s kick was good. The score jumped to 34-0.

Toward the end of the third quarter, the Blue Devils added some more icing on their cake as Turner dashed 13 yards for the final touchdown. Doerr’s extra point placed the score at 41-0.

“Lamont (Turner) had a great all around performance. He had three touchdowns, two interceptions and several tackles,” said Tranchina. “Dowling has had two really good games in-a-row.”

MIKE STOTLER RATTLES THE NET

Blue Devil Boys Boot Pioneers in Soccer, 1-0

By DAVID B. CORBIN

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Group 1 powerhouse, New Providence brought a 16-2-2 record into Westfield, hoping to bring home another victory; however, the Pioneers had to settle for a well-played, 1-0, setback at the feet of the Blue Devil boys. Senior Mike Stotler provided the winning margin.

The Blue Devils and the Pioneers jockeyed for control in the first half with the offensive edge going slightly in the Blue Devils’ favor. The first serious Devil attack came 2:40 into

the game when Ralph Rapuano forced Pioneer goalie Mike Machin to make a diving save to his right.

With 18:52 left in the half, senior Blue Devil Bob Stroud launched a free kick which was again caught by Machin. Three minutes later, junior Alex Lau whizzed a shot just over the crossbar.

Junior Frank Ianni threatened the Pioneers’ turf with 10:00 left in the half when he broke free down the right side and prepared to take a shot but was warded off at the last moment. Three minutes later, Ianni got off a shot which sailed over the crossbar.

Rapuano sizzled a shot off the hands of Machin with 5:22 left, then banged a shot over the crossbar with 4:03 left. With one minute left in the half, Rapuano, on the right side,

crossed to Ianni who was coming through the middle. Ianni took a sliding shot which just looped over the right portion of the crossbar.

The Blue Devils stepped up their attack in the second half and nearly forced the Pioneers to circle their wagons in total defense. The ambush was on. Ianni, with 8:34 off the clock, took a left footed shot which sent Machin diving after it. With 16:42 remaining in the game, Mike Todd drilled a shot off Machin’s hands. The ball dribbled forward and Stotler came in from the right side and ripped

the ball into the net to give the Blue Devils the 1-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, the Blue Devils mounted another assault. Lau blasted a shot past the right post. Several Devils hovered around the Pioneers’ zone and intimidated the defense. Then, Rapuano zipped a shot, from left to right, past the post.

For a brief period, the Pioneers recovered and went on the offensive. Pioneer Tristan Peterson fired a nice shot which was stopped by Idland, but the Devils soon regained control and kept control for the remainder of the game.

“I was very happy with our play,” said Blue Devil Head Coach Dave Shapiro. “As we (quote from Westfield game with Kearny) discussed last week, we don’t play as well against a run and kick team like New Providence, so we made a few changes to adapt.”

Shapiro added, “We tried to stop their midfielders and we shut them down. That gave us a chance to counterattack out of our defense.”

The Blue Devils previous game with Kearny was muddled with poor sportsmanship on the part of the Kardinals, but the game with the Pioneers was entirely different. “New Providence is a very good, controlled and disciplined team. Their coach teaches them well and keeps control.”

Machin had eight saves for the Pioneers and Idland had two. Westfield upped its record to 10-7-2.

New Providence 0 0 0 Westfield 0 1 1

ignited the offense early in the game by netting a goal 3:20 into the first half. Also connecting for the Blue Devils were Kristen Leonardis and Valerie Wicks. Goalie Woodbury was put to the test by stopping eight shots, posting her 11th shutout of the season.

Blue Devil Coach Margaret McFadden said, “We were ready to play against West Morris. The team moved well to the ball and were aggressive. We played with more confidence.”

Leading the successful Blue Devil attack were Ill, Leonardis, Wicks, Allison Cook, Jessica Wycoff Allison Rosenthal, Christine Thompson and Megan Pollock. Halfbacks Liz

McKeon, Paige Corbett, and Stephanie Flynn provided midfield support.

Defenders Lauren Mattes, Laura Bonavita, Amanda Pirozzi, Meghan McMahon, Linnea Liscinsky, Sara Burnett, and Nicole Bentivegna successfully shielded the Blue Devil den while goalie Woodbury made timely saves. The Highlanders stumbled to 7-10-2.

The Blue Devils were to host Mt. Olive in the second round of the sectionals on November 10.
