Louis J. Oliverie, 74, Decorated Veteran; Featured on 1943 Cover of Life Magazine

Louis J. Oliverie, 74, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, November 6, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Westfield, he had moved to Scotch Plains 40 years ago.

Mr. Oliverie had been a machinist with Lockheed Electronics, Inc. in Watchung for 28 years before retiring in 1989.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and the recipient of two Purple Hearts. On September 9, 1943, he was featured on the cover of Life magazine in a picture of the landing at Anzio Beach.

Surviving are a brother, Vincent F. Oliverie of Fanwood; a niece and two nephews.

A Mass was offered on Tuesday, November 10, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, following the funeral from the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood. Interment took place at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad or to the American Heart Association.

Lois Jane Wouters, Captain of Red Cross; Past Officer of Westfield DAR Chapter

Lois Jane Wouters, 81, of Holmdel died on Saturday, November 7, at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank.

Born in O’Fallon, Illinois on May 23, 1917, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Beedle Snodgrass, she had lived in Red Bank and Westfield before moving to Holmdel two years ago.

Mrs. Wouters had served as a Captain of the American Red Cross in Europe during World War II.

She was a member of the Tower Hill Presbyterian Church in Red Bank; a past officer of the Westfield

Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the Delta, Delta, Delta Sorority of the University of Illinois.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Edward Wouters.

Surviving are a son, Jan Wouters of Rumson, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 10, at the John E. Day Funeral Home, Inc. in Red Bank. Interment was at Fair View Cemetery in Middletown.

Frederik J. Bakker, 91, Retired Attorney; Army Veteran Was Senior Church Deacon

Frederik J. Bakker, 91, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, November 7, at the Robert Wood Johnson, Jr. Health Care Center in Plainfield.

Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, he had lived in Plainfield before moving to Scotch Plains in 1971.

Mr. Bakker had been a Counselor at Law in Plainfield for 58 years, retiring in 1992.

He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and German from Alfred University in Alfred, New York in 1929, and earned his Juris Doctor Degree from New York University School of Law in 1932. He was admitted to the Bar Association in 1934.

Mr. Bakker served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a member of the Plainfield Bar Association and the New Jersey State Bar Association.

He was a Senior Deacon and an active member of the Plainfield Seventh Day Baptist Church in Plainfield, where he also served on many of the church’s denomination organizations. Mr. Bakker additionally was a member of The Gideons International for many years.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Pamela Bakker, in 1958.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Shirley Reinhart Bakker; a daughter, Carol J. Robertson of Houston, Texas, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, November 12, at 8 p.m. at the Seventh Day Baptist Church, 501 Central Avenue, Plainfield.

Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church. Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery tomorrow, Friday, November 13, at 1 p.m.

Arrangements are being handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Katherine K. Sell, 85

Katherine K. Sell, 85, of Plainfield died on Friday, November 6, at Genesis Woodlands in Plainfield.

Born in Westfield on May 22, 1913, the daughter of the late John and Katherine Klimkowski, she had lived in Plainfield for more than 30 years.

Mrs. Sell had been an insurance agent at the John Dughi Agency in Plainfield for 35 years before retiring in 1994.

She had been active in The March of Dimes in Westfield during the 1950s.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter R. Sell, in 1983.

Surviving are a son, J. David Sell of North Plainfield; a grandchild and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held yesterday, Wednesday, November 11, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the North Plainfield Rescue Squad.

Helen Bevelheimer, 90, Led Garden Clubs; Was Member of Rake & Hoe in Westfield

Helen L. Mack Bevelheimer, 90, of Westfield died on Friday, November 6, at Ashbrook Nursing Home in Scotch Plains.

Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, she had resided in the New England area before relocating to Westfield in 1988.

She had been the Director of Art in the Lawrence Public Schools in Massachusetts, and was active in many garden clubs in that state.

Mrs. Bevelheimer received many citations from various governors while living in Massachusetts on her work with gardening and the environment.

She also served on several occasions as President of the Lawrence Garden Club, and was once the President of the State Garden Club of

Massachusetts. Mrs. Bevelheimer had additionally been a judge for the state club.

She was also a member of the Rake and Hoe Club in Westfield.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Irving Mack.

Surviving is her husband, Harold Bevelheimer; two stepdaughters, Linda Gross of Wakefield, Rhode Island and Carole Hetzell of Jamesburg; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, November 14, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.

Arrangements are being handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Joseph J. Harrigfeld, 82

Joseph J. Harrigfeld, 82, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, November 3, at home.

Born in Elizabeth, he had lived in Clark before moving to Scotch Plains 40 years ago.

Mr. Harrigfeld was the owner and a steel fabricator for Charles Goeller of Roselle Park for 55 years.

He served as an airplane and engine mechanic in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was predeceased by his wife, Vanetta Mae Joan Harrigfeld.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Blake-Mudryk of Flemington and Susan Harrigfeld of Scotch Plains; a sister, Dolores Ziobro of Freehold; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by the Walter J. Johnson Funeral Home in Clark.

Memorial donations may be made to the Rahway Hospital Hospice, Rahway, 07065.

Brianna N. Hroncich

Brianna Nicole Hroncich of Scotch Plains, four months old, died on Monday, November 2, in Union Hospital.

A Funeral Mass was offered on Friday, November 6, at the Catholic Church of the Assumption in Roselle Park, following the funeral from the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.

Surviving are her parents, Michael and Catherine Hroncich; her grandparents, John Bobish and Rocco and Hilda Hroncich, and her great-grandmother, Josephine Bobish.

Anthony Ricciardi, 74

Anthony Ricciardi, 74, of Bayville died on Wednesday, November 4, in the Westfield home of his daughter, Marie Sloan.

Born in Nutley, he had lived in Newark before moving to Bayville four years ago.

Mr. Ricciardi had owned Four Star TV Inc. in North Arlington for 30 years before retiring in 1985.

He served in the United States Army during World War II.

Also surviving are his wife, Rose Ricciardi; another daughter, Karen Kobelski; two sons, Anthony Ricciardi and Thomas Ricciardi; two brothers, Carmine Ricciardi and Michael Ricciardi; a sister, Anne Passafaro, and four grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass was offered on Saturday, November 7, at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.

Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue in Cranford.

Wylie Harriat, Sr., 80

Wylie Harriat, Sr., 80, of Westfield died on Saturday, October 31, at home.

Born in Rembert, South Carolina, he had moved to Westfield in 1947.

He had been a construction laborer for the Wilheim Construction Company in Elizabeth for 37 years before retiring in 1984.

Surviving are three sons, Wylie Harriat, Jr., Arthur L. Harriat and Sam Harriat; three daughters, Patricia Cleveland, Queen Gregory and Julie Carter; a brother, Henry Harriat; six sisters, Rosa Chatman, Bertha M. Kimble, Maggie Jackson, Ethel Godfrey, Elouise Long and Ester Powell; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 7, at the First Baptist Church in Linden. Arrangements were handled by the Smith Funeral Home in Elizabeth.

Joseph C. Petranich, 86

Joseph C. Petranich, 86, of Mountainside died on Thursday, November 5, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Brooklyn, he had lived on Staten Island before moving to Mountainside 41 years ago.

Mr. Petranich had been a selfemployed manufacturers’ representative in the picture frame and moldings industry in New York City for more than 55 years before retiring in 1984.

He served in the United States Army during World War II.

Mr. Petranich was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Springfield and the Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.

Surviving are a son, Frank A. Petranich, and two grandchildren.

Patrick J. Leahy, 61

Patrick James Leahy, 61, of Gulfport, Florida died on Wednesday, November 4, at home.

Born in The Bronx, he had lived in Fanwood before moving to Gulfport three years ago.

Mr. Leahy had been a computer analyst at Chemical Bank in New York City for 36 years prior to retiring in 1990.

He graduated from LaSalle Academy in New York City.

He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

He was predeceased by his wife of 31 years, Sheila O’Toole Leahy, in 1994.

Surviving are his wife of three years, Louise Good Leahy; two sons, Patrick Leahy of Connecticut and James Leahy of Fanwood; a daughter, Kathleen Leahy of Pennsylvania, and two sisters, Kathleen Farmer and Ann Leahy, both of East Brunswick.

A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, November 10, at St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church in Plainfield, following services at the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.

Floyd Edward Muse, 65

Floyd Edward Muse, 65, of Plainfield died on Tuesday, November 3, at home.

Born in Westfield, he had lived there for many years before moving to Plainfield.

He attended Westfield High School and was a member of Faith Fellowship Ministries in Edison.

He worked for Kentile Floors in South Plainfield.

Surviving are his wife, Emmaline Muse of Plainfield; two sons, David Whigham of Brooklyn and Kenneth Muse of New York City; four sisters, Shirley McCrea, Dorothy Muse and Elise Lee, all of Plainfield, and Rose Turner of Westfield; two brothers, Nathaniel Muse of Roselle and Florenze Freddy Muse of Westfield, and a granddaughter.

Arrangements were handled by the Plinton-Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.

Clifford M. Enz, 69

Clifford M. Enz, 69, of Piscataway died on Wednesday, November 4, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Kenilworth, he had lived in Georgetown, New York and in Scotch Plains before moving to Piscataway 39 years ago.

Mr. Enz was a graduate of Scotch Plains High School and also attended the Newark College of Engineering.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Enz was a member of Tri-Boro Memorial Post No. 5479 Veterans of Foreign Wars in Dunellen. He also served as Commander of the post from 1987 to 1991, and was a life member.

He was the first post member to be selected to the all-state team of post commanders in 1990-1991. Mr. Enz was a national aide-de-camp of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 19911992, and served the post as the adjutant and service officer for many years.

Earlier, he was a member of the Vigilant Chapter, Order of Demolay, in Plainfield.

He was predeceased by five brothers, John Enz, Rudolph Enz, Richard Enz, Theophilus Enz and Helmut Enz.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Joan M. Gregory Enz; a daughter, Peggy A. Syzmanski of South Plainfield; two sisters, Glendora Dow of Toms River and Amanda Kalin of Morrisville, New York, and a brother, Albert Enz of El Cajon, California.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 7, at The Mundy Funeral Home in Dunellen.

Anne Hose, 83, Active in Education; Helped Save Hetfield House in 1985;

Anne Runkle Hose, 83, of Mountainside died on Wednesday, November 4, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she had lived in New York before moving to Mountainside nearly six decades ago.

She graduated from Bennington College in Vermont in 1937 and earned a master’s degree in Social Work from Simmons College in Boston two years later.

As a member of the Mountainside Board of Education in the 1950s, Mrs. Hose championed the building of schools, including Deerfield School. She was also a Past President of the Parent-Teacher Association.

She was the Treasurer of Mountainside’s Historic Preservation Committee for most the 21 years since its founding.

In June of 1985, she helped lead the successful campaign to relocate

Francis Noonan, 85, Active With Church; Was Westfield Postal Worker for 42 Years

Francis X. Noonan, 85, a lifelong resident of Westfield, died on Saturday, November 7, in his hometown.

Mr. Noonan had worked for the United States Postal Service in Westfield for 42 years prior to retiring in 1984.

He was a member of the Holy Name Society of the Holy Trinity

Virginia M. Eick, 77

Virginia Meaney Eick, 77, of Fanwood died on Friday, November 6, at home.

Born in Plainfield, she lived in Fanwood since 1975.

Mrs. Eick was an assistant manager at the Queen City Savings and Loan Bank in Plainfield for more than 20 years.

She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, and of its Rosary Society. She also was a member of the Tri-County Senior Citizens.

Surviving are her husband, Henry L. Eick; a daughter, Nancy Eick of Virginia, and two sisters, Catherine Sheelen of Florida and Teresa Kyle of Scotch Plains.

A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, November 10, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, following the funeral from the Higgins Home for Funerals in Plainfield.

Willie Allen Tucker, 75

Willie Allen Tucker, 75, of Westfield died on Wednesday, November 4, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.

He was born in Alberta, Virginia, and graduated from high school there.

Mr. Tucker worked at J. S. Irving Company for 34 years and at General Builders for 14 years.

He was a United States Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Annie Tucker; his children; a brother, Herman Tucker of Fanwood; two sisters, Helen Graves of Westfield and Alice Procter of Alexandria, Virginia; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 10, at the Bethel Baptist Church in Westfield.

Arrangements were handled by the Plinton Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.

Josephine Ingraham, 72, Was Secretary; Had Worked for War Transport Ministry

Josephine Chittick Ingraham, 72, of Louisville, Colorado died on Thursday, November 5, in Boulder Community Hospital in Boulder, Colorado.

Born in Elizabeth on December 2, 1925 to the late Symmes Merton and Vivia Magee Ingraham, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Louisville two years ago.

She was a lifelong member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.

Miss Ingraham had been employed in New York City by the British Ministry of War Transport until the end of World War II. She subsequently had been employed as a secretary for Procter and Gamble for nearly 45 years prior to retiring in 1991.

Surviving are a brother, Bob Ingraham of Valpariso, Indiana and a sister, Bea Nickel of Tucson, Arizona.

Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mildred Noonan; a brother, Vincent Noonan, and a sister, Veronica Bevis.

A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, November 10, in the Holy Trinity Church, following the funeral from the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

the Revolutionary-era Hetfield House in the borough. The historic farmhouse, set to be razed in order to make room for a manufacturing plant, was moved to its present site beside the Mountainside Free Public Library.

Mrs. Hose also helped found the Mountainside Music Association nearly 40 years ago, becoming its President in the 1970s.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Haven Hose, in 1977.

Surviving are a son, Dr. John Robert Hose of Waltham, Massachusetts; two daughters, Judith Kiss of Raleigh, North Carolina and Barbara Chupko of Mountainside; a sister, Elizabeth R. Purcell of Cambridge, and four grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for later this month.

Arrangements were handled by the William R. Dangler Funeral Home in Summit.

A graveside service will be conducted by The Presbyterian Church in Westfield tomorrow, Friday, November 13, at 11 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Christ Mortuary in Boulder.
