Devil 7th/8th Lady Laxers Win Season Opener Over Madison

Westfield's 7th and 8th grade girls' lacrosse team won its season opener by defeating Madison 12-6 on April 14 in Westfield. The Little Devils came out strongly in the first minute of the game. Center Morgan Lang scored first on an assist from left attack wing, Chrissy Romano. Westfield displayed superb teamwork and passing skills as it con- trolled the ball throughout the game.

Strong defense wing positions were played by Meg Smith, Nicole Tomasso, Kristen Anton, Elyse Goldweitz, and Ali Pino who aggressively picked up ground balls and continually connected the ball between Westfield's defensive and of- fensive players. During the first half, goals were scored by center Lang, second home Erin Corbett and attack wing Christie MacDonald on assists by Romano, Corbett, Kristen Mann and Mary Lygate.

Playing attack positions for the first time were Whitney Laird at first home, Susie Williams at second home and Kate Wade at third home. Wade and Williams each scored a goal, while Laird had an assist from behind the goal area to Romano who fired in a bullet from the left side. Excellent use of the space be-

hind the goal and in the eight-meter arc was displayed by Kristen Gray, Lisa Paul and Corbett enabling Westfield to spread out its offense and feed the ball to oncom- ing teammates.

Lang, Elizabeth Perrella and Kathy Seib controlled the center. Lang had a total of five goals, Corbett had two, while Wade, MacDonald, Williams, Romano, and Amanda Shutts each contributed one to make the final score 12-6 in favor of Westfield.

On defense, Jessica Tymanski and Nicole Infantino, playing cover point, and Susie Kennedy, Jenny Rosenthal and Rachel Bavolar, playing point, kept Madison's offense at bay with recently learned defensive strategies. Jen Star played a superb game in the net as she deflected multiple Madison shots on goal.

Jazz Rebound to Edge Westfield Defeeters

Down by a 2-1 score midway through the second half, the Scotch Plains- Fanwood Jazz inter-city soccer team pumped in four unanswered goals to deflate the Westfield Defeeters, 5-2, this past weekend.

The tightly contested game was tied 1- 1 at half-time, but Westfield came out strong in the second half with a quick goal to take the lead. The Jazz then rallied using excellent ball-handling, fine passing to swing into the lead. Loni Kaye got the rally started when she made a sliding sideline save to prevent the ball from going out and, in the same motion, sent the ball up to Bitsy Kipping on the right wing. Kipping swooped in and fired in the tying goal.

The Jazz kept the pressure on and Lauren Mains sent a pass to Shannon Hauser on the right wing. Hauser faked to the right then surprised the Westfield goalie with a left-footed shot that found the right corner of the net. The Jazz kept the attack going when Becca McGuire pushed up from her fullback position and found Allie Hambleton with a pass.

Hambleton passed up her own scoring opportunity to feed Mains, who sent a point- blank shot high over the goalie's head.

In need of an insurance goal, the Jazz once again kept the ball in Westfield territory with an attacking fullback. This time the fullback was Briana Falco, who sent a pass to Hambleton and this time Hambleton decided to take the shot her- self as she blasted a searing low liner that nearly ripped through the back of the net for the final score of the game.

Red Fireballs, Devils Face-off in Tee Ball

The Red Fireballs (Team No. 5) and the Blue Devils (Team No. 7) of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Youth Ball Di- vision faced off against each other in a very well played game on May 2. Both teams provided plenty of offense and some spectacular defense for their ap- preciative fans.

Offensively, the Red Fireballs swung some powerful bats and each player col- lected several hits on the day. For the second consecutive week, Ricky Madurski filled the role of the Fireball's power hitter.

He hit the ball hard all three times he was up as he collected a triple and five RBIs on the day. James Wheeler pro- vided some pop at the top of the order as he was 3-for-3 with two doubles while Chris Bauer was 2- for-2 with a double. Chris Vicari, Blake Van Buskirk and Laura Degnan each turned in a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate. Joseph Del Prete, Kelly Cianciotta and Matt Graziano also chipped in with a mul- tiple hit game to round out the potent Fireball offense.

The Fireballs were also very sharp on the defensive end. Wheeler and Del Prete solidified the left side of the Fireball infield. Del Prete had two putouts from his third base position while Wheeler collected a putout and an assist at short- stop. Regan and Van Buskirk also chipped in with a putout each. Also coming up big for the Fireballs on defense were Bauer and Madurski.

Killer Bees Trounce Brunswick Wildcats

The top-flighted under-11 girls soc- cer team defeated, the Westfield Killer Bees, defeated the North Brunswick Wildcats, 5-0, this past Sunday in West- field.

Center halfback Gio Palatucci started the game with a strong high kick from about 20 yards out. The pass from left wing Stephanie Bridgeman set up the score. Center forward Darielle Fried then scored her fifth goal of the season when she left-footed a ball from the left post to the right corner of the net.

The second quarter saw left wing Jenna Federgreen take a crisp pass from center half Emily MacNeil and drill a shot to the right corner. The half ended with strong defense having been played by right half Ali Carter, fullbacks Lauren Purdy and Amanda Dickson, and stop- per MaryKate Maher.

The Westfield squad continued the scoring in the second half when Palatucci fought to keep the ball in play and finally put the ball past the frus- trated North Brunswick goalie. The scoring was completed when Carter, who made several nice passes during the game, was rewarded with an assist when center forward Dickson took a centering pass and popped it passed the Wildcats goalie.

The Killer Bees record stands at 4-2- 1 and the team has scored 16 goals while surrendering only six goals in seven games. They will be tested this coming Sunday when they travel to Somerset Hills and play the team that defeated the Bees 2-1 earlier in the season.

Wayne Hands Eagles First Defeat, 4-3, in Tournament

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Golden Eagles suffered their first defeat of the regular season, losing a heartbreaker to Wayne, 4-3, this past weekend.

Playing without any substitutes, the Eagles gave up two goals in the first five minutes. The defense then settled down and allowed the front line to put the Eagles back in the game. Jenna Balestriere scored the Eagles first goal, bringing the ball down the field unas- sisted and then sending a high shot above the keeper's outstretched hands.

Jeanette Franzone tied the game up when she took a centering pass from Carly Wells and booted a line drive into the upper right corner of the net. Wayne quickly roared back and scored their third goal of the game. Midway through the second half, the Eagles tied the game up once again when Kelly Rigano moved the ball down field and passed to Balestriere, who slipped a shot passed the keeper. The Wayne team could not be contained and within a few minutes, fought past the Eagle defenders and scored the winning goal.

Karen Gassler played a strong game in midfield for the Eagles.

The Eagles had a more successful day on May 3. Again playing with no substitutes, they bested the Monclair squad, 3-2. Although they controlled the ball through most of the game, the Eagles were unable to take advantage of their many shots on goal. Finally, Nina Baker sent a centering pass to Balestriere who registered the first score of the game.

Montclair countered with two quick goals and took the lead at half time.

Midway through the second half, Tayler Montagna and Elizabeth Elko sent several shots on goal and Montagna finally punched the tying goal past the keeper. Energized by this shot, Balestriere scored the go-ahead goal seconds later when she took a feed from Stephanie Sblendorio and booted the ball into the lower corner of the net.

The defense of the Eagles, led by Erin O'Connor and Shannon Hassett, contained Montclair for the balance of the game. Elise DeVries was keeper for the Eagles, making numerous saves and giving the team good field position with her kicks out of the goal.

Patience and hard work are starting to pay off for the Westfield Lacrosse Association's eighth grade team, as evi- denced by their second straight win, this one a 7-0 shutout in Chatham last Satur- day afternoon.

The team's play improves each week as the 24 boys on the squad learn to play together as a unit under the guidance of Head Coach Rich Werner, Assistant Coaches Brian Mulvey and Ivan Cohen, and parent coaches John Putnoky and Bob Elliott.

Following up on their hard fought 11- 10 win over Syosset, New York last week, the Blue Devils dominated play throughout the contest against Chatham by winning face-offs, grabbing ground balls and controlling the ball in the offen- sive zone.

Kevin Riley was impenetrable in goal and had aggressive defensive help from Tripp Bartlett, Rich Brautigam, Richie Harris, Joe McCabe, Chris Palentchar

and Dan Seeger. Members of Westfield's strong attack of Charlie Hely, Tim Mansfield, Sean O'Neill, Mike Panza and Trevor Putnoky kept relentless pressure on the Chatham defenders. Midfielders Stephen Adamowitz, Mike Charney, Mike Debrossy, James Donovan, Greg Elliott, Duffy Lau, Neil Owens, and Anthony Yudd, set the plays well and were effec- tive at controlling the ball.

Panza opened the scoring in the first quarter by scooping a rebound into the Chatham goal. Lau and O'Neill each tallied twice, Ellliott once and Yudd closed out the scoring, again with a re- bound.

The Devils travel to West Windsor for a morning contest this Saturday, May 9.

Dissident Artist's Paintings on Exhibit At The Elm Gallery

For decades, Alush Shima painted in secret under Albania's Stalinist regime, fearful that his bold artistic expression would land him a harsh prison sentence or even death.

Now, however, area residents can witness his courage and creativity through an exhibit of his work which will be on display at The Elm Gal- lery, 116 Elm Street, through June.

Following the fall of Communism in his native land in 1992, Shima flew to London with the best of his work. He described his paintings as "a revolt against the system" in Alba- nia, where the only legal art form was Socialist Realism.

"His work, of the Fauvist genre with its passionate, solid brush strokes and bold, expressive use of colors, clearly echoes Matisse and Van Gogh," said Elm Tree Gallery owner Robin Parness.

The exhibit hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Walk for Animals on May 17 To Benefit Homeless Pets

People for Animals, a non-profit animal welfare organization serving New Jersey, will hold its second an- nual Walk for Animals on Sunday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Nomahegan Park, located on Spring- field Avenue in Cranford. The rain date is Sunday, May 31.

Christine Nagy, a host of the Z- 100 radio morning show, is this year's Honorary Chairwoman. Ms. Nagy can be heard on Z-100 every Monday to Friday, morning from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m. She will attend the event to meet both human and canine walk- ers.

Though participants are being asked to obtain pledges from sup- porters, this is not a distance event, according to People for Animals' Event Coordinator Fran Moore, of Roselle Park.

No one is being asked to walk any specified number of miles, she em- phasized. What's more, Ms. Moore added, those taking part do not have to have a dog; as everyone is wel- come.

In addition to the walk, there will be refreshments, demonstrations,

contests for the dogs, free nail clip- ping and a doggie bag for each ca- nine participant. PetsMart is hosting the event as the corporate sponsor and is donating the doggie bags, con- test prizes and the services of their

groomer to clip nails. Funds raised will go to the People for Animals pet rescue and adoption program. Further information about the Walk for Animals and pet adop- tion is available by calling (908) 688- 1073. Edison School to Hold

Career Day on May 13

"Preparing for a Better Tomor- row" is the theme for the upcoming career awareness program scheduled at Edison Intermediate School on Wednesday, May 13.

All students in grades 6, 7 and 8 will participate, with each student being exposed to different careers, according to school district spokes- woman Lorre Korecky.

Guidance Counselors Carol Gerson and Gloria White-James, who coordinated the effort, stated "We both feel that it is a great opportunity. A lot of kids at this point in their lives have not been exposed to different careers.

"This will start their thinking about what they want to do. When they get to Westfield High School, they can choose courses based on their inter- ests," they added.

More than 40 speakers have agreed to share information about their ca- reers with the students.

Among those scheduled are nurses, doctors, a physical therapist, cellist, journalists, teachers, a neuropsy- chologist, an accountant, lawyers, pharmacists, engineers, pilots, an actress, computer programmers, goldsmith, funeral director, dental hygienist and a financial analyst.

The speakers will be assigned to specific classrooms for the first three periods of the first day, from 8:33 to 10:39 a.m.

Registration and a reception will begin at 8 a.m., at which Mayor Thomas C. Jardim, Superintendent of Schools Dr. William J. Foley, and Director of Guidance Dr. Cas Jakubik, have been invited to attend.
