Regine Gerstl, 88

Regine Gerstl, 88, of Plainfield died on Tuesday, June 9, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Vienna, Austria, she had lived in France and England before moving to Plainfield 44 years ago.

Ms. Gerstl was a self- employed seamstress for many years.

She was a member of the United Orthodox Temple in Plainfield.

Surviving are a niece, Susan Marks of England, and nine cousins, Frank Gottesmann and Sylvia Gottesmann, both of Marlboro, Bruce Gottesmann and Nan Gottesmann, both of Scotch Plains, Dennis Gottesmann and Amy Gottesmann of Columbia, Maryland, Gary Gottesmann and Michele Gottesmann of Manalapan, and Renee Spitzer of Florida.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 12, at the Hebrew Cemetery in South Plainfield. Arrangements were handled by the Higgins Home for Funerals in Plainfield.

Sophie Hess, 72

Sophie Hess, 72, of Holiday City at Berkeley in Berkeley Township, died on Wednesday, June 10, at home.

Born in Bayonne, she had lived in Westfield for 35 years before moving to Holiday City four years ago.

Mrs. Hess worked as a registered nurse for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. Hess, Jr. in 1980. Surviving are four daughters, Beverly Costello of Matawan, Linda J. Hess of Waretown, Joyce Ditzel of Barnegat and Claire Lewman of Louisville, Kentucky, and three grandsons.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 15, at the Ocean County Memorial Park Chapel in Toms River. Arrangements were under the direction of the Kedz Funeral Home in Toms River.

Memorial donations may be made to the Community Medical Center VanDyke Hospice, 99 Route No. 37 West, Toms River, 08755.

Edith Henningsen, 90

Edith Henningsen, 90, of Bloomfield died on Monday, June 8, in Mountainside Hospital in Glen Ridge.

Born in Newark, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Bloomfield seven years ago.

Mrs. Henningsen had worked for Syrian Wire Company in Newark for five years before retiring many years ago.

Surviving are a daughter, Edith Reeves, a grandchild and two greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 12, in the Levandoski Funeral Home in Blooomfield.

AMA Member Had Private Practice

Dr. Herbert A. Conner, 81, of Westfield died on Saturday, June 13, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Newark, he had lived in East Orange before moving to Mountainside in 1969. He relocated to Westfield in 1988.

A 1943 graduate of New York University Medical College, Dr. Conner had maintained a medical practice in East Orange which he eventually moved to Bloomfield.

In 1981, he left private practice and became the assistant to the medical director of Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of New Jersey. He held the position for 10 years before retiring.

During his career, he was also on the staff of Clara Maas Hospital in Belleville and of East Orange General Hospital.

Dr. Conner was a member of the Forest Hill Field Club in Bloomfield. He was also a member of the American Medical Association and the New Jersey Medical Association.

He served as an Elder at the Community Presbyterian Church in Mountainside.

Surviving are his wife, Mabel Conner; two sons, Bruce H. Conner of North Plainfield and Donald S. Conner of Westfield; a daughter, Linda Boor of Basking Ridge; a sister, Virginia Winfield of Nutley, and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a. m. on Saturday, June 20, at the Community Presbyterian Church. There is no visitation and interment will be private.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Community Presbyterian Church, Meetinghouse Lane, Mountainside, 07092, or to Children's Specialized Hospital, 150 New Providence Road, Mountainside, 07092.

Channie Royal Culp Floyd, 75, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, June 10, at the Robert Wood Johnson, Jr. Health Care Center in Plainfield.

Born in Vestaburg, Pennsylvania, she had lived in Scotch Plains for 50 years.

Mrs. Floyd was the owner of Channie's Cleaning Service in Scotch Plains for 35 years.

She was a member of the Veterans Hospital at Lyons Bowling League.

She was predeceased by a son, Michael Harrison, in 1991 and a sister, Louise Rutledge.

Surviving are her husband, William Floyd, Sr.; a daughter, Mabel

Jordan of Aurora, Colorado; a son, Clarence Harrison, also of Aurora; four brothers, Elliott Culp, Jr. of Washington, Pennsylvania, Jerome Culp of Clarksville, Pennsylvania, Frank Culp of Middlesex, and Thomas E. Culp, Sr. of Scotch Plains, and a grandchild.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, June 13, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jerseyland Park Community Center, 787 Jerusalem Road, Scotch Plains, 07076.

Mary Alice Gaines, 98, of Plainfield died on Sunday, June 7, at Greenbrook Manor Health Center in Plainfield.

Born in West Point, Virginia, she had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Plainfield 41 years ago.

Mrs. Gaines was a housekeeper within the Union County area for 70 years.

She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Westfield for more than 60 years. Mrs. Gaines also was a member of Martha Chapter No. 8 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Westfield.

She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Gaines, Sr., in 1997. Surviving are three sons, Henry Gaines, Jr. of Plainfield, Robert Gaines of Las Vegas and Wilfred Gaines of Richmond, Virginia; two daughters, Jean Randolph Gaines of Jacksonville, Florida and Marion Gaines of Riverdale, New York; 13

grandchildren; 19 great- grandchildren, and a great- great- grandchild. Funeral services were held on Friday, June 12, at the Bethel Baptist Church.

Arrangements were handled by the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.

Olive Munkel Hidi, 75, of Garwood died on Monday, June 8, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Garwood the last 52 years.

She was a swimming instructor at the Westfield YW- YMCA and a counselor at the YMCA Daycamp for the last 42 years.

She was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are a daughter, Judith Ann Nevers of Hopewell Junction, New York; two brothers, John Munkel of California and Paul Munkel of Whiting, and two grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue, in Cranford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Summer Day Camp Scholarship Fund, Westfield "Y," 220 Clark Street, Westfield, 07090, or to the New Jersey Special Olympics, 17 Woodland Avenue, Fanwood, 07023.

Steven Rosania, 34, DECA Alumnus; Founded Banking Group in California

Steven Luke Rosania, 34, of California, died on Saturday, June 13, in Bulls Head, Arizona, as a result of injuries from a boating accident.

Born in Montclair, he had lived in Scotch Plains prior to moving to California in 1984.

Mr. Rosania had founded the First Federal Funding Mortgage Banking Group in Lancaster, California, in 1997.

He was formerly employed with Hughes- General Motors Aircraft Division in Redondo Beach, California.

Mr. Rosania was a 1982 graduate of Scotch Plains- Fanwood High School and a 1984 graduate of Phoenix Institute of Technology.

While in high school he was a member of DECA, an association of marketing students.

Surviving are his mother, Linda Vecchiarelli; his father, Joseph Rosania; a brother, John Rosania; a sister, Julie Vannucci; his grandmothers, Jean Miccio and Rose Rosania, and a nephew and niece.

Visitation will be today, Thursday, June 18, from 2 to 4 p. m. and from 7 to 9 p. m. at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, in Fanwood.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday, June 19, at 9

Frank Mazza, 81

Frank Mazza, 81, of Fanwood died on Monday, June 15, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Elizabeth, he had lived in Linden before moving to Fanwood 33 years ago.

Mr. Mazza had worked at the Union County Court House in Westfield for 10 years before retiring in 1982. He formerly worked as a foreman for Bob Lane Manufacturing in Elizabeth.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, having served in the 112th Artillery.

He was predeceased by a sister, Grace Fisicaro.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Pesce Mazza; a daughter, Gloria Mazza of Bridgewater; two brothers, Thomas Mazza and Michael Mazza, both of Elizabeth, and two sisters, Kathryn Goss and Gloria Hamill, both of Elizabeth.

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, June 18, at 11 a. m. at the Fanwood Presbyterian Church, 74 Martine Avenue South, in Fanwood. Entombment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Arrangements are being handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, in Fanwood.

Sara Farber Juman, 85

Sara Farber Juman, 85, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, June 13, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

Born in Pittsburgh, she had lived in Newark, Union and Palm Beach, Florida, before moving to Scotch Plains in 1994.

Mrs. Juman was President of the North East Region of B'nai B'rith. She was a board member and director of tours for the National and International B'nai B'rith, and a board member of the Anti- Defamation League of B'nai B'rith.

She was also President of Rutgers Hillel and Princeton Hillel.

She was predeceased by her husband, Nathan Juman. Surviving are a daughter, Myrna Kohen of Bradley Beach; a son, Stephen F. Juman of Bridgewater; a sister, Martha Juman of Clark; five grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 16, at Temple of Israel Mausoleum at Beth Israel Memorial Park in Woodbridge.

Arrangements were handled by Kreitzman's Memorial Home in Union.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Association.

Stella Buchanan, 97

Stella Buchanan 97, of Westfield died on Thursday, June 11, at the Westfield Center, Genesis ElderCare Network, in Westfield.

Born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, she had lived in Irvington and North Plainfield before moving to Westfield in 1991.

Mrs. Buchanan was a self- employed pediatric nurse for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in North Plainfield.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Buchanan, in 1964. Surviving are a daughter, Loretta Conway of North Plainfield; two grandchildren; six great- grandchildren, and a great- great- grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 15, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in North Plainfield, followed by a Mass at St. Joseph's Church.

Antoinette F. Shea, 74

Antoinette F. Shea, 74, of Hillsborough died on Monday, June 15, at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.

Born in Jersey City, she had lived there until moving to Hillsborough 25 years ago.

Mrs. Shea was a homemaker. She was predeceased by a sister, Josephine Infante of Jersey City.

Surviving are two daughters, Elaine Graham of Hillsborough and Diane Alburtus of Ridgefield; three brothers, Ralph Reo and Frank Reo, both of Jersey City, and Philip Reo of Fanwood; four sisters, Barbara Guaimano, Fanny Marino and Yolanda Guaimano, all of Jersey City, and Betty Martinelli of Miami Beach, Florida; five grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.

Services will be held at 9: 30 a. m. today, Thursday, June 16, at the Ketusky Funeral Home in Manville. A Mass will follow at 10: 30 a. m. at the Mary Mother of God Roman Catholic Church in Hillsborough.

Melva H. Dohlmar, 86

Melva H. Dohlmar, 86, of Florida died on Sunday, June 14, at Bayview Nursing Pavilion in Clearwater, Florida.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she had lived in Bayonne and then in Plainfield from 1950 to 1994, when she moved to Florida.

Mrs. Dohlmar had been an accounting supervisor for Northern Insurance Company in New York City for 26 years prior to retiring in 1974.

She was a member of the Fanwood Presbyterian Church; Azure Lodge No. 87 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Cranford; Harry E. Johnson Council No. 123 Daughters of America in Cranford, and the Fanwood Woman's Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harry W. Dohlmar, in 1976. Surviving are eight nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 20, at 10: 30 a. m. at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, in Fanwood. Visitation will be from 9: 30 to 10: 30 a. m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Dorothy Spalluto, 82

Dorothy King Spalluto, 82, of South Plainfield, died Tuesday, June 16, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Westfield she and had lived in South Plainfield for more than 50 years.

She had worked in the administrative offices of the South Plainfield Board of Education during the 1960s.

Mrs. Spalluto was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in South Plainfield and the South Plainfield Senior Citizens.

She was predeceased by her husband, Victor Spalluto, 1981. Surviving are two daughters, Amy S. Cichocki of Whitehouse Station and Patricia Shapiro; and a son, Victor Spalluto of Blakeslee, Pennsylvania

Funeral Services will be held tomorrow, Friday, June 19, at 9: 15 a. m. at the McCriskin Home for Funerals in South Plainfield. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a. m. at Sacred Heart Church in South Plainfield. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p. m. and 7 to 9 p. m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mildred K. MacBean, 79

Mildred K. MacBean, 79, a resident of Grace Ridge, Morganton, North Carolina, died on Friday, June 12, at Grace Hospital in Morganton.

She had lived for many years in Westfield before moving to North Carolina.

In Westfield Mrs. MacBean was engaged in many civic activities. She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Morganton.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roy H. MacBean. Surviving two sons, James MacBean of Berkley, California and Lawrence MacBean of Hickory, North Carolina; a brother, Winfield Kohler of North Plainfield, and three grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by the Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton.

Memorials may be made to the Grace Ridge Life Care Tree Planting Fund or the Arthritis Foundation, Morganton, North Carolina

Visiting Nurse Service Seeking Volunteers For Hospice, Home Care

The Visiting Nurse Service System (VNSS), located in Elizabeth, is currently seeking volunteers to administer hospice services.

Hospice provides support and assistance to patients and their families as they cope with terminal illness. Their goal is to provide a variety of supportive services that may aid the patient in improving their quality of life.

Volunteers will work under the direction of the Hospice Supervisor, Volunteer Coordinator and/ or other professional staff assigned to care for the patient and their family.

Qualifications include a certificate of training provided by a Hospice program, a willingness to commit a program- defined minimum of time and give an average of five hours a week to the program, and the volunteer should not be in an active grieving period (approximately less than one year).

Requirements include completion of Hospice training; attendance at one scheduled volunteer support

group, and attendance at a minimum of two in- service training sessions.

Visiting Nurse is also currently seeking volunteers to administer a variety of home health care needs.

The Visiting Nurse Service System is a private, non- profit agency that provides home care and hospice services to residents of Union, Middlesex, Monmouth and Somerset Counties.

Volunteers can provide services including caring for a child in the Pediatric Medical Day Care Center, making visits or phone calls to patients who live alone, assisting with administrative projects for special events and providing bereavement support to families and adolescents who have lost a relative, and serving on planning committees and advisory groups to develop new projects.
