Holy Trinity Wins Holy Trinity Meet

The Holy Trinity Interparochial School Track Team was once again able to hold off all comers to win the 19th Annual Holy Trinity Meet at the Westfield High School track May 3.

The final tally had the hosts posting a winning score of 95.5. Runner up was St. John Vianney of Holmdel with 58.5 points. Nine grammar schools competed, including Saint Clare from Staten Island.

An impressive meet record was set by Maura Gallagher of Cranford's Saint Michael's school. Her time in the eighth grade 200 was 28.47. This record rounded out a clean sweep for Gallagher who since 1995 has set the 200 meter record for each grade fifth through eighth.

Other outstanding record breaking performances were turned in by Holy Trinity's Dennis Angeles in the eighth grade 800- meter run with a time of 2: 30.1 and Megan O'Shea with a time of 1: 11.59 in the sixth grade 400- meter.

Other winners for the home team were Bob Rush (400m), Brendan Egan (800m), Joe Korfmacher (200m), Deenie Quinn (1,600m), Alice Ryan (800m), and Kyle Gibbons (100m).

Bernstein Captures Masters 800- Meter

Irwin Bernstein of Westfield won a third consecutive 800- meter title in the New Jersey Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Monmouth Regional High School on May 31.

Representing the Shore Athletic Club and now moving up to the 65- 69 age group, Irwin recorded a 2: 49.8 to place ahead of Charles Wrixen, New Jersey Masters (3: 20.8) and Rogelio Vizzon, South Hudson Spike Shoe (3: 35.1). It was Bernstein's 11th win in 15 years in this meet.

Later in the meet, Bernstein recorded 1: 12.9 for 400 meters as a member of one of the Shore Athletic Club's 4x400 relay teams, which placed third in a 40 and older race.

Corbin for The Westfield Leader and The Times BEING VERY SELECTIVE… Willoughby team player Fred Walz won't bite at a bad pitch as catcher Chris Masterson of the Marion team snags it during a Fanwood Old Men's Softball Association game at La Grande Park in Fanwood on May 28. Walz drew a walk to cap a five- run inning.
