Dr. Harrison Oliver Brown, Jr., 69, Practiced in Westfield for 37 Years

Dr. Harrison Oliver Brown, Jr., 69, a former Westfield resident who practiced medicine in the town for 37 years, died on Friday, May 29, at his Flemington home.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia on June 18, 1928, Dr. Brown was raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he was an Eagle Scout and scout leader, as well as a life guard.

He had lived in Westfield from 1961 to 1981, when he relocated to Clinton. He resided there until moving to Flemington in 1988.

Dr. Brown maintained his own practice in internal medicine and gastroenterology in Westfield since 1961.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology in 1949 from the University of Virginia, and received his Master of Arts Degree in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania the following year.

Dr. Brown graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1954. A year earlier, had been the recipient of the Alpha Omega Alpha award.

His post graduate work included a medical internship at New York Hospital from 1954 to 1955. He served as a junior assistant resident in internal medicine at Bellevue Hospital in New York from 1955 to 1956, and as a senior assistant resident at the Memorial Center for Cancer and Allied Diseases in New York City from 1958 to 1959.

Dr. Brown earned a Fellowship in Gastroenterology, Second (Cornell) Medical Division, at Bellevue Hospital during 1959 1961.

He also had a long affiliation with Overlook Hospital in Summit, having been appointed to the Courtesy Staff in 1961, and as Assistant Attending Physician in Medicine in 1963; Associate Attending Physician in Medicine in 1967, and as Attending Physician in Medicine from 1972 until the time of his death.

Dr. Brown also served as Chairman of Overlook's Medical Education Advisory Committee from 1970 to 1974, 1976 to 1978 and 1986 to 1988, and as Chief of the Department of Medicine from 1974 to 1976.

In 1961, he became a member of both the American Medical Association and the Union County Medical Society, of which he was President from 1977 to 1978. He was named to the American Society of Internal Medicine in 1966.

Dr. Brown became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Health in 1971 and of the American College of Physicians. He joined the American Public Health Association in 1971.

He was named as an Associate with the American Association of

Family Physicians in 1972 and also became a member of the Society for Advanced Medical Systems that year.

He had been a member of the American Medical Informatics Association since 1980. In addition, he served as Vice President of Central Jersey IPA and as a member of Board of Healthways, both from 1979 to 1981. He served an American Cancer Society Fellowship from 1959 to 1961.

Dr. Brown co- authored several medical publications, and was a founding member of VISTA Health Systems, an independent organization now comprised of more than 200 physicians in Union, Somerset, Morris and Essex Counties.

At the age of 16, Dr. Brown was a radio operator in the United States Merchant Marine, serving in the Atlantic.

After college, he served as a Ward Officer in the United States Army Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany, from 1956 to 1958, when he was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. He was also named Chief of Outpatient Service and received a Letter of Commendation for his service overseas.

Surviving are his wife, Dr. Jean Abel Cramer Brown; two sons, David Littleton Brown of Hillsborough and Dr. Steven Holloway Brown of Nashville, Tennessee, and a brother, Julius Bunting Brown of Richmond, Virginia.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p. m. on Friday, June 19, at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Jean M. Borger, 72, Active in Church; Former Substitute Teacher in District

Jean M. Borger, 72, of Fanwood died on Friday, May 29, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.

Born in Towson, Maryland, she had lived in Fanwood for 32 years.

Mrs. Borger had been a substitute teacher in the Scotch Plains- Fanwood public school system before retiring 10 years ago.

She was a graduate of Drexel University in Philadelphia. Mrs. Borger was a member of the Fanwood Presbyterian Church and its Woman's Association, and of the Fanwood- Scotch Plains YMCA.

Surviving are her husband, Franklin L. Borger; a son, David L.

Borger of Upland, California; a sister, Romaine McGough of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and two grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the Fanwood Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, June 2.

Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Organ Mission Fund of the Fanwood Presbyterian Church, 74 Martine Avenue, South, Fanwood, 07023.

John P. Mahar, Sr., 101, Held Office; Had Owned Bus Company in Linden

John P. Mahar, Sr., 101, of Fanwood died on Sunday, May 31, at the home of his daughter.

Born in Oneonta, New York, he had lived in Linden for 97 years before moving to Fanwood six months ago.

Mr. Mahar had been a warehouse worker for Merck and Company in Rahway for 12 years, retiring in 1961. He previously had been an owner of the Mahar- Villani Bus Company in Linden for 30 years.

He was an United States Army veteran of World War I, serving in France. He was a former City Councilman in Linden and a member of the Linden Exempt Firemen's Association.

Mr. Mahar was a member and Past Commander of American Legion Post No. 102 in Linden, as well as its Last Man Club.

He was a member of the Linden Knights of Columbus Council No. 2859, and of the Holy Name Society and the 50 Plus Club of St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Church in Linden. He was inducted into the Union County Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Wagner Mahar; a son, John P. Mahar, Jr. of Linden; a daughter, Helen Byrne of Fanwood; five grandchildren, and

seven great- grandchildren. A Funeral Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, June 3, at St. Elizabeth's Church in Linden. Arrangements were handled by the Leonard- Lee Funeral Home in Linden.

Memorial contributions may be made to Children's Specialized Hospital, New Providence Road, Mountainside, 07092.

Ann M. Conlin, 66

Ann M. Conlin, 66, of Oxford, Pennsylvania, originally from Westfield, died on Friday, May 29, at her residence.

Born in Westfield, she had lived in the town most of her life before relocating to Oxford nine years ago. She was a 1950 graduate of Westfield High School.

Mrs. Conlin had worked as a secretary at Croll- Reynolds in Westfield before retiring. She previously was employed by Delbarton School in Morristown and by Capital Airlines as a stewardess.

She was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Oxford.

Mrs. Conlin was predeceased by her parents, Robert P. and Mary Oneill Laing.

Surviving are her husband, A. Bruce Conlin, Jr. of Oxford; a son, Kenneth Brown of Gilbert, Arizona; a sister, Patricia Lambert of Manchester, and a brother, William Laing of Asbury.

A private funeral service and interment had been arranged under the direction of the Edward L. Collins Funeral Home, Inc. of Oxford, Pennsylvania.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 312 West Lancaster Avenue, Oxford, Pennsylvania, 19363.

Arthur Zemel, 87

Arthur Zemel, 87, of Maplewood died on Sunday, May 31, at his home.

Born in Plainfield, he had lived there for 86 years before moving to Winchester Gardens in Maplewood one and a half years ago.

Mr. Zemel had been a banker and Chairman of the Board at Rock Bank of North Plainfield for 25 years, retiring in 1994. He was a Certified Public Accountant for 30 years with Dorosin & Zemel in Linden, and with Zemel, Mailman & Reiter in North Plainfield.

He also was a consultant for Wakefern Food Corporation.

Mr. Zemel was a member of the Plainfield Free and Accepted Masons Lodge, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Intercontinental Life Insurance Company of Newark, the Franklin State Bank in Somerset, and the Community State Bank of Linden.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ann Tucker Zemel, in 1995, and by two brothers, Jacob Zemel and William Zemel.

Surviving are a son, Robert S. Zemel of Westfield; a daughter, Susan R. Lappin of Mendham; a brother, Sol Zemel of Florida, and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 2, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.

Harriet M. Stanley, 80

Harriet M. Stanley, 80, of Westfield died on Thursday, May 28, at the Westfield Center, Genesis ElderCare Network.

Born in Bayonne, she had lived in Westfield for 51 years.

She was a communicant of St. Helen's Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.

Surviving are her husband, Stanley T. Stanley; a son, Stanley J. Stanley of Manhattan; a daughter, Harriet M. Stanley of Hillsborough; two grandchildren, and two great- grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Saturday, May 30, at St. Helen's Church, following the funeral from the Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

G. A. "Peg" Schryba, 81, Den Mother; Headed Bamberger's Workers Group

Gertrude Anna "Peg" Schryba, 81, of Mountainside died on Sunday, May 31, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.

Born in Newark, she had lived there before moving to Mountainside in 1951.

Mrs. Schryba had worked for Bamberger's in Newark during the 1940s as a section manager. She was the first woman President of the department store's Co- Workers Association.

She was active with the Westfield Day Care Center and the First Congregational Church of Westfield, as well as the church's Bible Study Group.

Mrs. Schryba had been a den mother for the Mountainside Cub Scouts.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Schryba, in 1991. Surviving are two sons, Paul R. Schryba of Mountainside and William K. Schryba of Trenton, and a brother, Richard Jaeger of Culver Lake.

Funeral Services were held yesterday, Wednesday, June 3, in the First Congregational Church. Interment took place at Hollywood Memorial Park

in Union. Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, in Westfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, 125 Elmer Street, Westfield, 07090, or to the St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, Montana, 59004.

John Paltz, 57

John Paltz, 57, of Florida died on Wednesday, May 27, at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Brandon, Florida.

Born in Plainfield, he had lived in Fanwood and in Connecticut before moving to Florida 20 years ago.

He attended Notre Dame University and graduated from St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, New York.

Mr. Paltz was a product marketing manager for Lykes of Florida and a surveyor at Comer Engineering in Plant City, Florida.

He was also a member of Plant City Elks Lodge No. 1727.

He was a former member of the New Jersey National Guard.

Surviving are his mother, Grace Paltz of Columbia, Maryland; two brothers, Walter Paltz of San Diego, California, and Christopher Paltz, of Cranford, and a sister Mary Grace Van Nest of Davidsonville, Maryland.

A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, June 2, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.

Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Mark L. Cagnassola

Mark L. Cagnassola, 38, of North Bellmore, New York, died on Thursday, May 28, in the Nassau County Medical Center in New York.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he had lived in Westfield before moving to North Bellmore in 1993.

He was a painter for Regional Builders Company in North Bellmore. Prior to that, he had been a painter and a mason in the Westfield area for many years.

Mr. Cagnassola served in the United States Army during peacetime.

Surviving are his parents, Louis and Louise Cagnassola; five brothers, Christopher Cagnassola, Joseph Cagnassola, Louis Cagnassola, Jr., Jon Cagnassola and Paul Cagnassola.

A Funeral Mass was offered on Monday, June 1, in St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church in Garwood. Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield.

James A. Hatton, 69

James A. Hatton, 69, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, May 29, at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Born in East Orange, he had lived in Union before moving to Scotch Plains 35 years ago.

He received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in business administration from Rutgers University in Newark.

Mr. Hatton was the owner and President of Jersey Forging Inc. in Jersey City.

He was a member of the Willow Grove Presbyterian Church, Gavel Lodge No. 273 of Free and Accepted Masons in Union.

He was a former member and Elder at the Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church in Union. Surviving are his wife, Irene Hartenstein Hatton; two daughters, Debra Hatton of Scotch Plains and Lynn Decker of Clinton; a son, Scott Hatton of Clinton; a sister, Jean LeCarl of Union, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 2, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Home, 185 Tuckerton Road, Medford, 08055- 1346.

Goldie Bauchner, 84

Goldie Bauchner, 84, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, May 30, in Ashbrook Nursing Home in Scotch Plains.

Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in New York City before moving to Scotch Plains four years ago.

Miss Bauchner had been a buyer for R. H. Macy's in New York City before retiring 17 years ago.

She is survived by a brother, Arthur Bauchner.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 1, in Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge.

Arrangements were handled by the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

Florence Eide, 88

Florence Eide, 88, of Westfield died on Tuesday, May 26, in the Cranford Hall Nursing Home in Cranford.

Born in Newark, she had lived in Union for many years before moving to Westfield two years ago.

Mrs. Eide had been a secretary and office manager with the Gulf Oil Company in Linden before retiring in 1971.

Surviving is a brother, Thomas Joyce.

A Mass was offered on Friday, May 29, in St. Genevieve's Roman Catholic Church in Elizabeth, following the funeral from the August F. Schmidt Memorial Funeral Home in Elizabeth.
