Paul Stofa bounced a one-out single to left for the Trolley in the fourth, but Jersey pitcher Nugent got Walsh to pop up to the catcher, then confidently struck out the next batter. Nugent looped a single to left in the bottom of the fourth but was unable to score.

With one out in the fifth, Jogis wiggled a single up-the-middle, then tagged up and flew to second on a fly ball to center. Shor slapped a single past short and Jogis scored to put the Jolly Trolley in front, 6-5.

MARVELLI, FILIPSKI SLAM HOMERS

The Sun Valley Radiates; Singes Marian Ave., 11-3

By DAVID B. CORBIN

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Sun Valley moved a step closer to obtaining a better playoff position in the Fanwood Old Men’s Softball Association by singeing Marian Avenue, 11-3, at La Grande Park in Fanwood on July 20. Bill Marvelli and Kevin Filipski got Sun Valley stepping highly with home runs in the first inning.

Jeff Doyle led off the first with a walk, then stole second. Dan Pasquariello launched a sacrifice fly to deep center and Doyle dashed around third and into home for the score. Marvelli smashed his solo home run to left, Don Darlington

dropped a looping double over shortstop, then Filipski hammered his homer to remote center field to cap a four-run inning. Al Manzi also singled in the inning.

Ace pitcher Pete Lima retired all three Marian batters and Marian pitcher Joe Dasti escaped the second inning unscathed. Frank Malta ripped a single to leadoff the bottom of the second for Marian. Danny Mondelli drilled an RBI double to left and moved to third on a throw home. Chris Lynch stepped to the plate and drove Mondelli home with a grounder to second, making the score, 4-2.

Sun Valley attempted some unusual and unfortunate base running in the top of the third which resulted in no runs. Darlington doubled to center but was nailed out while attempting to take third, then Joe Spotto singled to right and stole second but was thrown out attempting to steal third. Manzi wiggled a single to right but Lima flied out to left to end the inning.

Lima regained his composure in the next three innings and held Marian to only a single by Malta in the fourth and a single to Shamus Dolan in the fifth. During that time, Sun Valley added another run in the fourth. Doyle singled then scored on Pasquariello’s double to center.

Sun Valley increased its lead to 72 in the top of the sixth. After Jamie Teel manipulated his way around second on a zany play, he was thrown

out by Marian catcher Dave “Ozi” while attempting to steal third. Doyle and Pasquariello who both walked, respectively scored on a Marvelli sacrifice fly and a Darlington single.

Marian squeezed another run in the sixth when Chuck Lehman reached base on an error, Tim Nielson singled, Malta walked and Mondelli sacrificed to center to drive Lehman home.

Sun Valley lit up in the seventh and glowed with four more runs. Manzi and Teel walked, then Doyle dribbled an RBI single to right. Pasquariello walked and Teel scored on a throwing error, Marvelli poked an RBI single to left, then later scored on a

throwing error. With a huge lead, Lima was ruthless in the seventh. Only Steve Grimmer reached base on a single to right and Sun Valley picked up its fifth victory of the season.

shot which eluded the shortstop. Marv Scherb slapped a single to left to bring home Williams and Reade.

After holding St. Jude, St. Michael added two more runs in the bottom of the second. Fred Holm hacked a single to left and Joe Borowski sizzled a single up-the-middle. Paul Morello wiggled a single to center to load the bases, then Bill Lawrence launched a sacrifice fly to right field to send Holm home. Roberts ripped a single to left to score Borowski.

No further runs were scored until “Gang Green” went to work like a well-oiled machine in the fourth. Marty Bernstein and Grizzard singled, then Tom Rutkowski rocked an RBI single past shortstop. Tony Perfilio, Joe Romash and Joe Dolan each followed with RBI singles and Fran Lienhard lashed an RBI single to right. Lou DeChristofaro bounced an RBI single to left, Elmi hit a grounder to second which was muffed as another run scored and Friedlander whacked a two-RBI single to right to give “Gang Green” an 11-5 lead.

“Big Blue” was saddened by the momentous event; however, there was still some stomping to do on the base pads. In the bottom of the sixth Reade reached safely on an error, Scherb ricocheted a single off the third baseman and Nick Barattucci hooked an RBI single to left. Ben LoBrace bopped a single to center, Morello grounded out to the pitcher as Barattucci scored and Lawrence lobbed an RBI single to right, narrowing the score to 11-9.

After Pietrucka made a fabulous, run-saving diving catch in left field, St. Michael approached the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Pietrucka punched a single to left and moved to third on two outfield flies. With two out, Reade rapped an RBI single to center and Scherb put the tying run on second with a single to center. Barattucci hit a dangerous chop to Frank Chupko, the St. Jude pitcher. Chupko leaped, snagged the ball and threw it to first for the final out.
