Scholar-Athlete of the Year Recognized by Freeholders
Union County Freeholder Linda d. Stender recently acknowledged the accomplishments of Scotch Plains- Fanwood High School graduate Doug Bishop as she presented a resolution to him at the Union County Superin- tendent of Schools' office in West- field.
Acknowledging his many achieve- ments, including being named Union County Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 1998, Freeholder Stender also noted that Doug was a National Merit Scholarship winner, lettered in three sports, and ranked third in his class.
"I join all the Freeholders in whole- heartedly extending our sincerest congratulations to Doug for being named Union County Male Scholar- Athlete for 1998," she remarked.

"Also, he has assisted his own soccer team to capture two confer- ence championships, a county cham- pionship, two state sectional cham- pionships, the 1997 State Champi- onship, and was named to First Team- All County and Second Team-All State," Freeholder Stender said.
Doug attended the 1997 American Legion Boys' State program, partici- pated in the French National Honor Society Club, and was named a New Jersey Bloustein Scholar. He will at- tend college in Massachusetts in the fall.
Service League Announces Six Scholarship Recipients
The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Ser- vice League has announced the re- cipients of its $12,000 scholarship awards, which are part of the an- nounced $42,000 donated to the com- munities this year.
An award of $2,000 has been given to each of the following six students for their 1998-1999 school year. Five of the students are graduates of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, and one is a graduate of Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains.
All of the scholarship recipients have been community-minded while in high school and college, accord- ing to Service League spokeswoman Dorothy Bandola, and have worked during semester breaks and vaca- tions.
Scott Amory is completing his jun- ior year at Rowan Uni- versity in Glassboro, where he is a c o m p u t e r science ma- jor and works for the Networking Systems of the univer- sity. Lisa Ciatto is a junior at East Stroudsburg College in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylva- nia, where she is en- rolled in the elementary education p r o g r a m . She is in- volved as a v o l u n t e e r with chil- dren in ac- tivities in Stroudsburg.
Emily Gray, a junior at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachu- setts, is en- rolled in an e x t e n d e d Physician's Assistance P r o g r a m . The pro- gram in- cludes extra semesters during the summer, including hospi- tal rotations and internships.
Silvana Nizzardo is majoring in elementary education at Kean Uni- versity in Union, and will be a sophomore. She has been a part-time worker for the Scotch P l a i n s - F a n w o o d Board of Education.
Edward Sorge will be a senior at the Univer- sity of Hart- ford in West H a r t f o r d , Connecticut in Septem- ber. He plans to pursue a career as a physician's assistant. At the univer- sity, he served as a Resident Assistant; while at home he is part of the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad.
Kristy Statue will be a junior at Rowan University, majoring in bio- logical sci- ence. She plans to work in re- search re- lated to pro- tection of the e n v i r o n - ment. Kristy has worked for Habitat for Human- ity, and as a naturalist at the Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside.
'A Taste of Westfield' Slated As Benefit for First Night
The First Night Westfield Com- mittee is making plans for a benefit called "A Taste of Westfield," in which all of the best restaurants, bakeries and caterers of Westfield and neighboring communities will come together to offer their cui- sine.
"A Taste of Westfield" will be held on Saturday, October 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Temple Emanu-El, 756 East Broad Street in Westfield. Advanced tickets will be sold for $35 per per- son, and will be sold at the door if space allows for $50 per person.

For parents who would like to at- tend "A Taste of Westfield" but need
a babysitter, the Westfield "Y" will offer a Kids Night Out. For $12, children may go to the Westfield "Y" for dinner, a movie, arts and crafts, sports and organized games in the gymnasium.
Youngsters ages 1 to 4 will be taken care of by the "Y" babysitters after they have their dinner. Time slots are available from 6 to 9 p.m. Parents are advised to make their reservations at the "Y" early, as space is limited.
The proceeds from "A Taste of Westfield" will benefit the third an- nual First Night Westfield, a New Year's Eve cultural celebration with activities and fun for all ages.
Fanny Wood Day Seeking Non-Profits Participation
Fanwood Mayor Maryanne S. Connelly and the Fanny Wood Day Committee are inviting all non-profit groups in the Fanwood area to par- ticipate in the third annual Fanny Wood Day slated for Sunday Sep- tember 27, from noon to 5 p.m.

chase free space for the event. The street fair will once again be held in the center of the commercial area of Fanwood at the intersection of South and Martine Avenues, and in the surrounding streets, which will be closed to automobiles for the event.
Children's rides, entertainment and attractions are being planned. Some of the attractions include a Moon walk, pony rides, face painting, a disc jockey, Overlook Hospital's Healthy Avenue Van and a Battle Ship New Jersey Exhibit.

The Fanny Wood Day Committee is an all volunteer group dedicated to establishing better relations and im- proving downtown Fanwood through an annual street fair, explained spokeswoman Pam Sayles.
"We have accomplished our first goal and brought many people to our downtown during the last two years. Our new goal is to enhance our down- town by purchasing and dedicating a street clock to celebrate the millen- nium," she explained.

PERSIAN DELIGHT….Philip is a five-year-old Persian cat who needs a loving home. BRIAN DALY, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Daly of Fanwood, was graduated from Seton Hall Univer- sity in South Orange. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Commu- nication, magna cum laude, and is a former graduate of Union Catholic Regional High School in Scotch Plains. While at Seton Hall he was Operations Director and Sports di- rector for Seton Hall's radio station, WSOU-89.5 FM. He also was a sports staff writer for the school's newspaper, The Setonian. He is employed with the New Jersey Jack- als, a minor league baseball team in Montclair, as the engineer and pro- ducer for their games which are heard on WSOU.

ALLISON M. REES, the daugh- ter of Ruth and Alfred Rees of Scotch Plains, received a Bachelor of Sci- ence Degree in Civil Engineering. Allison is a member of the Ameri- can Society of Civil Engineers. She will be employed at Altus Engineer- ing, Inc. in Portsmouth, New Hamp- shire.
JAQUELINE STASI of Westfield was among 1,494 candidates for graduation at the University of Mis- sissippi in University, Mississippi this spring. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
JOHN SPENCER MASK, of Westfield, was graduated from the Military Academy at West Point in West Point, New York.
He majored in Portuguese and Latin American studies and has been com- missioned as a Second Lieutenant, to Fort Rucker, Alabama, where he will
do his officer training in flight school. He will eventually fly helicopters for the Army.

NCADD Announces Three-Day Workshop On Assessment Process
The National Council on Alcohol- ism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) of Union County will offer a three- day workshop on the assessment pro- cess specifically focused on those who are working with substance abus- ers and their families.
This program, to be held from Tuesday through Thursday, August 4 to 6, is being presented by Maryann Higgins, who has a local private practice and has worked in the sub- stance abuse field for more than 10 years. This 18-hour course is ap- proved by the state's Certification Board.
The workshop will be held at the NCADD offices at 300 North Av- enue, East, in Westfield. The cost is $135. For further information and registration, please call (908) 233- 8810.
Red Cross Chapter to Hold Blood Drive on August 5
The Westfield/Mountainside Chapter of the American Red Cross will host a blood drive on Wednesday, August 5, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Chapter House, lo- cated at 321 Elm Street in West- field.
All materials involved in blood donation, including the needle, are sterile, used once, and safely de- stroyed. The entire procedure takes under an hour, and the actual dona- tion less than 10 minutes.
Donors should be 18 years of age. Seventeen year olds may do- nate with parental permission. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds and be free of cold or flu symptoms. Individuals should know their social security number and bring a signed form of identi- fication with them.
People with cold or flu symptoms should wait until they are feeling better before donating, and there is a 72-hour deferral for dental work, including routine teeth cleaning. Those who have traveled outside of the United States recently are asked to call the blood center for eligibil- ity criteria.

Laura Silverman Elected to Honor Society
At Univ. of Rochester
Laura Silverman, a senior majoring in psychology at the University of Roches- ter, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the national scholastic honorary society. The faculty nominates students to Phi Beta Kappa on the basis of academic achieve- ment, values and leadership potential.
Laura is a graduate of Westfield High School.
Jane Wieting Named To Dean's List for Spring
Jane Wieting of Westfield, a junior at Caldwell College in Caldwell, was re- cently named to the Dean's List for the Spring 1998 semester.
Each of the students maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher and completed at least 12 credits during the semester.
