Local Residents are Named To UCC's President's List
Union County College has named 446 students to the President's List in recognition of their academic excel- lence during the spring semester. They were honored from among more than 8,000 full-time and part-time students at the college.
Consideration for the President's List is based upon quality points earned as a
result of the student's grades and the number of credits carried. Only ma- triculated students are eligible for the President's List recognition.
To qualify, a student carrying at least 15 credits for a semester must achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average out of a possible 4, with every grade being a "B" or higher. A matriculated student carrying 12 credits during one semester is eligible for the President's List with a grade-point average of 3.75 or better and no grade lower than a "B."
A part-time matriculated student will be considered for the President's List if the student earns at least 12 credits and has attained a cumulative grade- point average of at least 3.
Once this minimum is met, the stu- dent must carry no less than six credits and attain a semester average of 3.75 with no grade lower than a "B."

Local Students Recognized In Academic Talent Search
Sean Adams
Sean Adams of Westfield was among those students recently hon- ored by the Johns Hopkins University's Institute for the Aca- demic Advancement of Youth (IAAY) for exceptional scholastic achieve- ment in Hopkins' annual pre-college academic Talent Search.
Hundreds of students in grades 5 through 8 were recognized for their abilities during several awards cer- emonies held in May and June. Sean, along with several other area resi- dents, were commended June 13 at a ceremony held at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark.
At the Awards Ceremonies, sev- enth and eighth graders who scored above the mean for college-bound high school seniors on the College Board's Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) I: Reasoning Test received certificates and special awards.
Sean was among the top scorers in the 1998 Talent Search. As a seventh grader, he scored 670 on the math- ematics portion and 730 on the ver- bal section of the SAT, tying for second place in the latter category in the IAAY event.
The student was elected Secretary of the Student Government Associa- tion at Edison School. In addition, he has received a one-course scholar- ship to St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, New York.
Other Westfield students honored during the awards ceremony in New- ark were Raj Bhandari, Emily Chen, Robert Eckman, David Eisenberg, Robert Freundlich, Charles Hely, Tyler Patla, and Tashera Perry, all of Edison Intermediate School, and Kimberly Cernak, Gregory Engel, Katherine Hollenbach, Orlee Maimon and Juhie Tamboli, repre- senting Roosevelt Intermediate School.
Additional Westfield students who were recognized included Sarah Ginsberg of Terrill Middle School in Scotch Plains; Isaac Kramer of the
Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison, and Arti Mattu of Newark Academy in Livingston.
From Scotch Plains, the honored students included Lauren Baines, John Park and Patrick Shevlin, all of Park Middle School; Brian Curcie and Nisha Tamhankar, both of Terrill Middle School, and Matthew Samuel of the Solomon Schechter Day School in Cranford.
Fanwood residents recognized were Sofia Fayngold of Terrill Middle School and Eric Pratt of Park Middle School.
Those honored at the state with honors level included Sean Adams, honors in verbal and mathematics, and Brian Curcie, honors in math- ematics.
New Jersey public and private school administrators and teachers were instrumental in identifying stu- dents to participate in the Talent Search, according to search Director Linda Barnett.
Using above-grade-level testing, the Talent Search offers students who typically excel an opportunity to test the full extent of their verbal and mathematics skills, the director ac- knowledged.
Editor's Note: The following is a list of recent college graduates. Due to a back log of graduates in previous weeks, The Westfield Leader and The Times of Scotch Plains and Fanwood

Recycling Association Makes Donations to Local Groups
The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Re- cycling Association has announced that at a recent meeting, several grants benefiting local activities were au- thorized.
The most recent donations include backboards for the Fanwood Volun- teer Rescue Squad; a carbon monox- ide detector for the Fanwood Fire Department; electronic equipment for the Borough Council Chambers and Cable Channel 35, and a "weed whacker," a leaf blower and a "SAWZALL" for the Department of Public Works.
At the same meeting, officers and trustees were re-elected. The trustees include Marcia Anderson and Beverly Heinrich; Secretary/Trea- surer Joan Ayala; Vice President Thomas Harris, and President Rob- ert Sommerich
The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Re- cycling Association operates the Fanwood Recycling Center. It is a non-profit, tax-exempt, volunteer organization, and is composed of various non-profit, community-ori- ented groups, each of which earns funds for its group by contributing volunteers to help work at the Recy- cling Center on Saturdays.
DONATIONS RECEIVED…Members of the Fanwood community display items which were donated by the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Recycling Association. Pictured, left to right, are: Squad President William Crosby and Sue Davis of the Fanwood Volunteer Rescue Squad, with one of the new squad backboards; Raymond Manfra, Director of the Fanwood Department of Public Works, with a new "SAWZALL," and Fanwood Fire Chief John Piccola, with the new carbon monoxide detector.
Last year, approximately 13,000,000 pounds of recyclable material was processed. Many of the groups, such as the Lions Club, Col- lege Club, and Women's Club, use the money they earn to support their own charitable donations. In addi- tion, when sufficient funds are avail- able, the association makes direct grants and donations to local causes.
Over the years, approximately $20,000 has been made in these di- rect gifts, and about $60,000 per year saved for Fanwood taxpayers by avoiding the cost of curbside pick up, according to Mr. Sommerich.
