JCC Old Stars Slide Past JCC CBI Blue, 15-14
St. Patrick's Rally Stuns St. James Oldtimers, 9-7 By MICHAEL P. BABIK
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
It was a day of glory for the Stars of Old as they managed to just slip by the Congregation of Beth Israel blue in the second game of a JCC double header on July 12.
CBI leadoff hitter Doug Schwartz singled to start the game with a blooping line drive that ran up the middle of the Old Stars' defense. The Stars, however, were able to execute a double play to end Shwartz's chance of scoring. Jason Weisholtz, who singled, scored the lone run of the inning on singles by Allan Gross and team captain, Andrew Port.
The Stars would answer in the bottom of the first, loud and clear. Both Ron Bachman and Darren Drapkin singled. Harry Semple
doubled to drive in Bachman and Drapkin. Another double by Scotty Burns drove in Semple and singles by Bob Rosen and Marc Schweitzer brought in Jim Baumgartner and Lowell Weiner to end the first with the Old Stars leading 6-1.
CBI would see scoring opportunity again in the second. Starting pitcher, Gerry Kirshenbaum doubled to al- low Ben Levoy to score. Kirshenbaum would score too on a single courtesy of Joel Horowitz, cutting the stars lead to three.
The Old Stars would come with four answering runs in the second. Howard Flesser drew a lead-off walk and Rich Eisenberg slapped a line drive to the outfield to get on base. Rick Wolf doubled and both base runners scored. Wolf and Brachman would also score on singles by Drapkin and Semple before a pop out to right field would end the inning.
The top of the third inning was one of good fielding on the part of the Stars. CBI's Glenn Frank hit to the second baseman who forced out the runner at second, then threw out Frank at first. Jason Weisholtz hit a

St. Patrick came zooming back from a 7-2 deficit, scoring three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth, to stun St. James, 9-7, in St. Bartholomew's Oldtimers Softball League action at Brookside Park in Scotch Plains on July 9.
From the start, St. James seemed too dominate. Dan Perrine singled and was hit home by Stan Grausso, who tripled. Grausso then scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Matuska. Later, Louis Balestriere was thrown out at second to end the inning, 2-0.
St. Patrick, however, quickly jumped back in the game at the top of the second inning. Charlie Laskowski, who singled to left, scored
on a sacrifice fly — courtesy of Al Rezza. Pat Luono was tagged out to retire the side, 2-1.
Tom Maher led off the second in- ning for St. James and singled to center. Albert Antoine also singled to center, then Maher scored on a sacrifice fly by Jack Quinn. Captain Jim Hoelzel nailed a single which bobbled past the first baseman and allowed Antoine and Maher to score. A sacrifice fly by Perrine brought in Bob Pielhau and a single by Louis Balestriere brought in Hoelzel to rack up a 6-1 score.
In the fourth inning, St. Patrick scored another run courtesy of Ken Larson who was pushed home with singles by Tom Swales and John Esposito. Esposito was tagged out at second to retire the side. St. James answered with another run by Hoelzel who scored when Grausso lobbed a sacrifice fly to right field, third. Chuck Harcourt dug in at the
plate and lofted a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Kamins. Chaos continued to threaten with singles from Bill Harcourt and Rossi and a walk by Hassan, but no further runs were scored.
After Chaotic outfielders Rabinowitz and Chuck Harcourt per- formed defensive wizardry with back- to-back miraculous catches, the Chaos offense increased its lead to 9-4 in the sixth. Rabinowitz and Joe Penzak both walked and Kamins came through with a two-run double.
With fans in the background cheer- ing them on, Checchio Chiropractic gained confidence and cracked the scoring column for two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brady bounced a single to center, Rivera hacked a single to left and Jeff Cole loaded the bases with another single. Mondelli sacrificed Brady home and Dasti sac- rificed Rivera home.
Dasti, the left fielder, got Checchio's out of the seventh inning when he snagged a line drive and threw Chaos base runner Chuck Harcourt out as he scampered back to first. Now, with its last opportunity, Checchio's came to bat. Malta grounded out, Joe Walsh whizzed a single past third, Buckwald walked, Brady flied out to center and Rivera looped an RBI single to left. Cole popped out to second for the third out and Chaos picked up its 11th win of the season.

Levoy batted in Lowenthal when his fly to center field was misfielded. Gerry Kirshbaum would score on a singles by Horowitz and Schwartz. A bad throw to first allowed Weisholtz to gain second base and
Allan Gross popped out to first, but not before another run would be scored by Frank.
Old Star Burn's triple in the bot- tom of the fifth and a sacrifice fly by Jim Baumgartner pulled in another run for the black. Lowell Weiner and Bob Rosen would single but neither would score and the Old Stars held a 15-7 edge.
Andrew Port singled to start off the sixth, but was tagged out at second after Marty Marks singled. Later, Lowenthal lashed a triple to center, allowing Marks and right fielder Howie Queller to score. Levoy's sac- rifice fly brought in Lowenthal and brought CBI within five runs of tying the game.
In the seventh, CBI reapplied the pressure. Schwartz was hit by a pitch, Frank singled, then Schwartz scored on a sacrifice fly by Gross. A triple by Marty Marks allowed Port and Frank to score. Queller scored on hits by Lowenthal and Levoy bringing the CBI to within one run, 15-14; how- ever, the Old Stars held on to get the third out and the victory.
