BOOK PALS…The McKinley Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organiza- tion (PTO) in Westfield recently sponsored its annual Book Fair. Volunteers set up and conducted the three-day event, which was attended by all the elementary students, teachers and many of the parents. Each student was given a book of their choice as a gift from the PTO. Second-grade teacher Suzanne Geoghegan, standing at rear, is pictured with her students. Westfield Art Students Earn Excellence Awards
The Westfield Art Association awarded 12 Awards of Excellence in Fine Arts to seniors at Westfield High School during Westfield Fine Arts Senior Recognition ceremony at the high school on June 8.
Recipients were chosen based on a review of their work which was ex- hibited at the Westfield Public School District Fine Arts Exhibition in May.
EXCELLENCE IN ART…The Westfield Art Association Awards of Excellence in Fine Arts were presented at the Westfield Fine Arts Senior Recognition ceremony at Westfield High School on June 8, sponsored by the Westfield Coalition for the Arts. The recipients, pictured left to right, are: back row, Yu Jung Jin, Ji Yoon Lim, Bridget Benisch, Patricia Chumpitaz, Pamela Lygate and David McCabe and, front row, Daniel Brown, Michael Baly, Ryan St. Clair, Matthew Schwab and Craig Long.
Their work was reviewed by a com- mittee of artists.
The recipients included Michael Baly, Bridget Benisch, Andrea Bistak, Daniel Brown, Patricia Chumpitaz, Yu Jung Jin, Craig Long, Pamela Lygate, Ji Yoon Lim, David McCabe, Ryan St. Clair and Mat- thew Schwab.
Their art teacher, Arthur Silveira, explained that the students' work dem- onstrated a proficiency in a variety of media, including acrylic, oil, pastel, pencil, sculpture and watercolor.
LUCKY WINNERS…A "Win a Book" contest, organized by Eileen Raska, Library Media Specialist at Coles Elementary School in Scotch Plains, was held recently in honor of National Library Week. There were 32 winners, pictured above, who received books acquired through funds donated by the Parent Teacher Association.

Local Residents Promoted At Union County College
Union County College has pro- moted 15 of its faculty members, including several local residents, to higher ranks, effective Tuesday, September 1. Their ranks include the levels of senior professor, the highest attainable level; full pro- fessor; associate professor and as- sistant professor.
The college promoted Dr. Deborah Asher of Scotch Plains and Dr. Constance Rubin of Morristown, both members of the English faculty.
The college promoted Patricia Rodihan of Westfield, Director of the Computer Science Program, and Dr. Paola Salvini-Capasso, also of Westfield, a member of the Biology faculty, to the rank of Assistant Professor.
Dr. Asher joined the UCC fac- ulty in 1978. She is the chief reader for the college's placement test for incoming students, organizing and supervising the essay portion of the test and training other faculty mem- bers as readers as well as with the test's holistic scoring process.
Dr. Asher conducts a similar ef- fort regarding a follow-up test on
the same students. She had served as a writer on behalf of a task force denoting the college's mission goals and objectives for a Self Study re- quired by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Outside of UCC, Dr. Asher is a Past Secretary of the New Jersey College English Association. She holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Warwick, master's degrees from both the State Uni- versity of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton and SUNY at Buffalo, and a doctorate from Rutgers Uni- versity.
Professor Rodihan joined the UCC faculty in 1993. She has modi- fied the college's Computer Sci- ence degree program and was in- strumental in developing new courses, including Visual Basic, Internet, Visual J++, Visual C++, a computer literacy course, and Win- dows Operating System. Professor Rodihan has secured for the col- lege two grants from the Microsoft Corporation, obtaining various soft- ware licenses.
She co-chairs the Teaching, Learning, and Technology (TLT) Roundtable, an advisory council aimed at bringing technological in- novations throughout the college community and its curricula and the Faculty Academic Technology Committee.
She is the faculty adviser to the college's new Computer Club. Out- side of UCC, Professor Rodihan serves on an advisory committee to the Computer Technology degree program at New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Dr. Salvini-Capasso joined the UCC faculty in 1994. She intro- duced a new experiment to be in- corporated into the microbiology curriculum, and helped to develop a biotechnology course through the Division of Continuing Education and Community Services that is designed for high school and middle school science teachers. Dr. Salvini- Capasso serves on the Faculty Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee. Outside of UCC, she is a member of the New Jersey Sci- ence Teachers Association. She earned her education through the doctoral level at the University of Rome.
Area Residents Among Pingry Graduates
Three local residents, one from Fanwood and two from Scotch Plains, were among 128 students who gradu- ated from The Pingry School during its 137th commencement ceremo- nies held on June 7 at the Martinsville campus.
Rebekah "Becky" Murphy of Fanwood, winner of The Pingry School's Girls' Soccer Cup, will at- tend the United States Naval Acad- emy.
Leslie Wepner of Scotch Plains, an Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar and winner of the Yearbook Award, will attend the University of Pennsylvania.
Meredeith Wepner, also of Scotch Plains and co-winner of the French Language Prize, will attend the Uni- versity of Pennsylvania as well.
Founded in 1861 in Elizabeth, The Pingry School is an independent, co- educational country day school for students in grades 7 through 12. Today, the school maintains cam- puses in Short Hills and Bernards Township, near Martinsville.

Tyler Patla Honored For Academic Skills During Talent Search
The Mathematics and Verbal Tal- ent Search conducted by the Johns Hopkins University Institute for the Academic Advancement of Youth (IAAY) held its 1998 Awards Cer- emony on June 13 at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Tyler Patla, a Westfield seventh grader, placed with distinction in verbal and mathematics skills by scor- ing higher than the average college- bound 12th-grade student on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) I: Reasoning Test in the 1998 IAAY Talent Search.
He also received a "State Award with Honors in Math" for a score in the top 1 percent of the 27,330 sev- enth graders who participated in tak- ing the SATs.
Tyler is the son of Cathy and Ray Patla.
Donald Patterson Receives Baptist Church Scholarship

Fanwood High School, was awarded an $800 scholarship on June 14 by the Scholarship Committee at the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Scotch Plains.
The scholarship recipient was Vice President of the choir and a member of the varsity football, basketball and baseball teams at his high school. He plans to attend Bloomfield College, where he received a scholarship for basketball and baseball.
Donald has been active at Metro- politan Baptist since he was 7, and has participated in church school and the junior usher board. Pres- ently, he directs the youth choir there.
Ella Peayer is President of the Scholarship Committee at the Met- ropolitan Baptist Church. The Rev- erend Clement Griffin is the pastor.
WHS Student Will Travel to Japan For
Summer Exchange
Justin Renard, of Westfield, received a scholarship for a summer exchange program in Japan from Allied Signal Foundation. The scholarship is for a sum- mer in Japan through Youth For Under- standing (YFU) International Exchange, The program is one of the oldest and largest for high school students.
Justin now attends Westfield Senior High School. He will live with a family in Japan. Allied Signal Foundation is one of over 50 multinational corpora- tions that offer scholarships. Currently, over 650 American students receive scholarships annually to travel abroad on YFU exchanges.
YFU was established in 1951 as a private, nonprofit educational organiza- tion offering exchange programs to high school students.
Today, YFU operates exchange pro- grams in 62 countries and has an Inter- national Center in Washington, D.C., and more than 185,000 alumni.
Justin is a sophomore at Westfield High School taking French Honors and Spanish languages and plans to take Japanese in the Fall through a new pro- gram at the high school.
He belongs to the French National Honor Society, Key Club, Interact and Foreign Language Academic Guidance (F.L.A.G.)
Justin holds down two part-time jobs in Westfield.
BLOCK PARTY FUN…This year's annual Edgar Road Block Party, attended by approximately 100 residents and visitors, was held on Saturday, June 13. Good food, laughter, and neighborly camaraderie abounded. A highlight of the block party was a visit by Westfield police officer, Scott Rodger, who arrived on behalf of the Westfield Police Department to promote community relations and a positive police presence in this family neighborhood.
