S. P.-F. U-8 United Captures Toms River Soccer Tourney
LEAGUE CHAMPIONS…The Westfield 11-12 year old Athletics, pictured left to right, are: front row, Brian Stotter, Michael Kline, Max Blanton, Jason Mesches, Mark Kline, Alex Monaco and James Hanas; back row, Michael DLeo, Alex Bregman, Christopher Witkowski, Chris Heinen and Sean Callahan. Not pictured, Jeremy Krell.
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood U-8 United (SPFSA), a House League Tournament side, was triumphant in the highly competitive Toms River Soccer Association Tournament. The victory was not secured until the final match and was based on the third tie breaker of the tournament.
The SPFSA United opened win a 3-1 win over the well-trained Toms River Stompers. Michael DiVisio scored two goals and Tyler Stanek one. Keepers Daniel Dougher and Tommy Sutter demonstrated the hallmark defense of the United to perfection with superb play. Midfield play by Ryan Kreuger, Tim Leischner, Brandon Reddington, and Snan Hessemer was flawless in the exciting snatch.
Next was a thrilling, 0-0, draw with the talented Vineland Light-
ing to set the stage for Sunday's finale. The United not only had to win, but also had to hold the Toms River Warriors scoreless. The de- fensive play was perfect, and the offense found the net five times. Stanek hustled his way to two scores while Reddington took advantage of a Warrior miscue to score in the first half. Hessemer netted a pen- alty kick, and Aspell moved up Dom his halfback position to close the score line at five.
The third victory gave the United enough points to edge Tideland by the fewest goals allowed tie breaker. The win is a most satisfying end to the long season in both House League and tournament play. The boys look forward to next season and the chal- lenges to maintain their great soccer experiences. Athletics Beat Mets;
Win Int'l League Baseball Title
The International League cham- pionship of the Westfield Baseball League was won by the Athletics, coached by Barry Bregman, in a single game played against the Mets, coached by Tom Madaras.
The game was marked by a close pitching duel, with no runs scored by either team until the top of the sixth inning. Alex Bregman of the Athletics sacrificed to score team- mate Max Blanton, who had reached third after a hit earlier in the inning.
The Athletics, aided by the strong pitching of Michael Klein and Chris Witkowski, held on to their lead to win by a score of 1-0. During the season, the Athletics were also coached by assistant coaches Paul Mesches and Peter Monaco.
Westfield White Beats Warren Team, 11-5
Westfield's Nine-Year-Old White Team increased their record to 5-0 with a win against Warren on July 4. The pitchers, Derek Anderson and Peter Rucinsky combined to throw nine strikeouts and to lead Westfield to an 11-5 victory.
A first inning triple by Mike Venezia and hits by Tim Jacob and Kevin Hennessy gave the White team an early 3-0 lead. Two stolen bases and hits by Anderson and Sam Crawford increased the lead to 4-0 in the second inning.
A third inning rally from Warren got them on the scoreboard with three runs. Westfield retaliated with six stolen bases, hits from Ross Abramowitz, Rucinsky, Crawford, and walks to Tim Jacob and Venezia, increasing the lead to 10-3.
In the top of the fourth, two strikeouts and a pop-up kept the Warren team from gaining ground. Westfield came back with hits by Abramowitz and Hennessy, and a walk to Colin Callaghan to score one more run.
The fifth inning saw Warren score two runs while Westfield's Eric Hoens hit a double in the bottom of the inning.
In the top of the sixth, fielders Sean Ferro, Danny Dickson and Chris Sailors kept the Warren team score- less and Westfield maintained its unbeaten record.
SECOND PLACE FINISH…Congratulations to the Scotch Plains "El Nino" tournament team. The group of U-8 boys, coached by Ed Kahn and Phil Molinaro, captured second place in the Toms River soccer tournament June 13- 14. Pictured, left to right, are: front row; Jeff Stewart, Chris Fumifredo, Jarek Cohen, Taylor Molinaro, Eddie Kahn, and Kyle Mihanski; second row, Robbie Cunningham, Brendan Kirby, Tommy Hursell, James DiNizo, John Guiffre, Jackson Udelsman; back, Coach Phil Molinaro (not pictured, Coach Ed Kahn)
