John J. Powers, 68, Retired Police Lieutenant in Township
John J. Powers, 68, of Scotch Plains, died Friday, June 26, at the Muhlenberg Regional Medical Cen- ter in Plainfield.
Born in Kenilworth, he had been a lifelong resident of Scotch Plains.
Mr. Powers served in the United States Navy for five years during the Korean Conflict as a flight mechanic aboard aircraft carriers, one of which was the first canted deck carrier.
He was employed by the United States Post Office in Scotch Plains, until he resigned in 1961 to join the Scotch Plains Police Department. He retired from the Police Department in 1995 with the rank of Lieutenant and 34 years of service to his commu- nity.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, American Legion Post No. 209, Policemen's Benevo- lent Association Local No. 87, all in Scotch Plains, the Emerald Society of Union County as well as a volun- teer with Boy Scout Post No. 209 in Scotch Plains.
Mr. Powers was predeceased by a son, James O'Hara Powers, an assis- tant swimming and girls volleyball coach and substitute teacher at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, on June 6.

Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.

Lynne E. Byrnes, 41, Was State Deputy Attorney General
Lynne E. Byrnes, 41, of Lawrenceville, died on Saturday, June 27, at home.
Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, she had lived in Scotch Plains and Princeton before moving to Lawrenceville in 1990.
Ms. Burns graduated from Colo- rado State University in 1978 and received her master's degree in psy- chology from Rutgers University in 1980. In 1983, she earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree from Seton Hall University Law School in New- ark.
She served as a Deputy Attorney General focusing on environmental law for the State of New Jersey in Trenton, since 1987. Earlier, she had been a law clerk with Superior Court Judge Arnold Stein and an Assistant Counselor for former Governor Tho- mas H. Kean.
Ms. Byrnes was a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Surviving are her husband, Gre- gory Romano; her parents, Thomas P. and Elsie Byrnes; a brother, Robert S. Byrnes, and a sister, Deborah
Byrnes. A Funeral Mass was held at on Wednesday, July, 1 in the Aquinas Institute, Princeton.
Arrangements were held by the Mather-Hodge Funeral Home in Princeton.

Alexander Bentley, 75, PSE&G Supervisor, Elder at Presbyterian
Alexander A. Bentley, 75, of West- field, died on Tuesday, June 23, in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Yonkers, New York, he had lived in Metuchen for many years before moving to Westfield 33 years ago.
Mr. Bentley was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II. He served for three-and-a-half years during which time he was aboard the
U.S.S. Boyle, a destroyer in the Pa- cific and Mediterranean Theatre.
Mr. Bentley was employed with PSE&G in Newark for 36 years as a Senior Field Supervisor before retir- ing in 1987.
He was ordained as an Elder of the Presbyterian Church and was a mem-
ber of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield and the Monday Morning Craftsmen, the Chapter 13 Seniors Club and a long-time member of the Triangle Bowling League, all of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
Mr. Bentley was also a member of PSE&G's bowling league, and a member of the Old Guard of West- field. He was also a volunteer in Union Hospital in Union.
Surviving are his wife, Carole Scharff Bentley; three daughters, Debra Genabith of Watchung, Sheila Bower and Brenda Kuhnhenn, both of Glendale, Arizona, and seven grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 10, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or The Valerie Fund, in care of Overlook Hospital in Sum- mit.
Arrangements are being handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield.

Harriet Antle Thomas
Harriett Antle Thomas, a former long-time resident of Westfield, died Thursday, June 25, in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Mrs. Thomas had been a mem- ber of the United Methodist Church.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Clifford L. Antle; by her second husband, Issac Thomas, and by a daughter, Phyllis Antle Bingham.
Surviving are three grandsons, and three great-grandchildren.
Interment was at Fairview Cem- etery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Pumphrey Funeral Home in Bethesda, Maryland.

Mary E. O'Sullivan, 79
Mary Elizabeth O'Sullivan, 79, of Waldwick, died Monday, June 29, at home.
Born in Bayonne, she had lived in Westfield and Roselle before moving to Waldwick in 1979.
Mrs. O'Sullivan was a lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph the Carpenter Roman Catholic Church in Roselle and St. Gabrielle's Roman Catholic Church in Upper Montclair.
She was a member and Past Presi- dent of the Maternity Guild at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Elizabeth for more than 20 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Gilbert and Kathleen McTague; a son, Joseph F.X. O'Sullivan, Jr.; two sisters, Angela Hourigan and Barbara Dalton, and eight grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be offered today, Thursday, July 2, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Teresa of Avila Roman Catho- lic Church in Summit. Arrangements are being handled by the William A. Bardley & Son Funeral Home in Chatham.

Lorraine Patterson, 49, of Scotch Plains, died Monday, June 22, at home.
Born in Plainfield, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Scotch Plains several years ago.
Ms. Patterson was a graduate of Penn State University and a mem- ber of the Delta Sigma Theta So- rority.
Surviving are her mother, Martha W. Patterson, and her grandmother, Courtney Walker.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 4, at 10 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, located at 529 Trin- ity Place in Westfield.

Edmund Pedicine, 88
Edmund Pedicine, 88, of Clark, died on Saturday, June 27, at the Ashbrook Nursing Home in Scotch Plains.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Belleville before moving to Clark in 1961.
Mr. Pedicine was a construction worker for the Construction Workers Union Local No. 342 of Newark for 25 years before retiring in 1968.
Surviving are his son, Frank Pedicine; a brother, Albert Pedicine; a sister, Edith Pedicine; six grand- children, and eight great-grandchil- dren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, June 30, at the St. Agnes Church in Clark.
Arrangements were held by the Walter J. Johnson Funeral Home also in Clark.

Helen Bell McMartin, 92
Helen Bell McMartin, 92, of West- field, died on Friday, June 26, at home.
She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and lived in various communities, before moving to West- field.
Mrs. McMartin attended Sullins College in Tennessee which is now known as King College.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Hans Heer, in 1959.
Surviving are her husband, John S. McMartin; a sister, Louise Chapman of Houston, Texas; a brother, Frank T. Bell of Tequesta, Florida, as well as one nephew and two nieces.
Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday, June 30, at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield.

George J. Ferro, 73
George J. Ferro, 73, of Belleville, died on Thursday, June 25, at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville.
Born in New York City he had been a lifelong resident of Belleville.
Mr. Ferro served in the United States Army during World War II.
He was a graduate of Seton Hall University in South Orange.
Mr. Ferro was the President of Ferro Trucking in Hillside, retiring in 1997.
He was a member of the Forest Hill Club in Bloomfield as well as the PGA (Pro Golfers Association) Na- tional in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
He was predeceased by a grand- son, David Ferro, in 1995.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Hnatew Ferro of Belleville; a son, Stephen Ferro of Scotch Plains; two daughters, Cindy Ferro of Delray Beach, Florida, and Janice Ferro of Belleville, and another grandson.
A Funeral Service was held on Monday, June 29, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in West- field.

Donald C. Large, Jr.
Donald C. Large, Jr., 63, of York, Pennsylvania, died Saturday, June 13, in York Hospital.
Born in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Donald C. Large, Sr. and the late Edythe Gwynne Large of Westfield.
Mr. Large was a 1952 graduate of Westfield High School and a 1956 graduate of Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
He had worked as an account rep- resentative for Manchester Indus- tries for more than 20 years and at Lift Inc. of Lancaster.
Mr. Large was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Dallastown, Pennsylvania, and also a member of Ducks Unlimited, for which he served as Treasurer.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Susan Cooper Large; three daugh- ters, Dr. Susan L. Ralston of Mor- gan, Utah, Sally L. Stump of Littleton, Colorado, and Julie L. Sable of Mem- phis, Tennessee; two sisters, Linda L. Wood of Rochester, New York and Judith L. Mirabella of North Wales, Pennsylvania, and three grandchil- dren.
Interment was at Millersville Men- nonite Cemetery in Millersville, Pennsylvania.

Harry L. Heller, 88, F & AM Master; Was Chairman of Insurance Company
Harry L. Heller, 88, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, June 30, at home.
Born in New York City, he had lived in Elizabeth and Westfield be- fore moving to Scotch Plains in 1985.
Mr. Heller had been the Chair- man of the Board of the Greenwich Agency Inc. of New York City be- fore retiring last year. He had worked in the insurance industry for more than 60 years.
He was a member of the Profes- sional Insurance Agents, a national organization, and had been a Master of Theodore Roosevelt Lodge No. 219 of the Free and Accepted Ma- sons in Carteret.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Madeline Heller; two daughters, Nancy B. Gard and Linda C. May; a sister, Mary Lebkus; six grandchil- dren, and a great-grandchild.
A chapel service will be held to- day, Thursday, July 2, at 11 a.m. in Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge.

John L. Nadolski of Fanwood died on Sunday, June 28, at home.
Born in Bayonne, he had lived in Fanwood since 1953.
Mr. Nadolski had been a machin- ist at Exxon Corporation in Linden for 37 years prior to retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Exxon An- nuitants Club.
He was a United States Navy vet- eran and had served during World War II.
Surviving are a son, Robert J. Nadolski, and four grandchildren.

Born in Baltimore on August 3, 1897, she had lived in Mountainside before moving to Ponte Vedra Beach 10 years ago.
She was a graduate of Goucher Col- lege in Towson, Maryland.
Surviving are two sons, Richard F. Ely and Allen Ely, Jr.; four grandchil- dren, and eight great-grandchildren.

STUDENTS DONATE A TREE Fifth graders at School One Elementary in Scotch Plains recently participated in a tree dedication ceremony at their school. The 58 youngsters, who will be graduating from School One and attending Park Middle School in the fall, had collected pennies over the past few months in order to purchase the pink dogwood tree as a farewell gift to their school. All of the students participated in the ceremony by stating what trees means to them and by singing a song. Pictured, left to right, are: Morgan Scully, Candice Grimes, and Rolanda Franklin.
