'Judy Lee Day' Honors Success of Pool Coach By WILLIAM McMEEKAN, JR.
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader
It began humbly enough. "Judy Lee started out as a booth attendant," explains Westfield As- sistant Director of Recreation James Gildea, "and she just went on from there."
Where Judy Lee went in her 25 years with the Westfield Memorial Pool has not only put her at the forefront of New Jersey's summer swimming programs but also has made her a vital part of many of Westfield's youth.
Under her guidance as head swim- ming coach, the Memorial Pool "Blue" team has remained undefeated in the North New Jersey Swim League for the past 14 years.
"Throughout the league, the repu- tation of the Memorial team is un- matched," says former Mountainside Community Pool Coach Steven Fowler. "It's an amazing record."
Lee's quarter-century of service was acknowledged on June 30 in a cer- emony at the pool.
"She is one of the most inspira- tional swim coaches around," Fowler explained, "always smiling, and loved by everyone, friend and com- petitor alike."
Westfield High School Girls' Swim Team Captain Heidi Shoenemann agrees, saying, "Judy keeps it com- petitive, but she also makes it fun."
According to Gildea, "Where other teams sometimes have a tough time finding enough swimmers to fill all the events, Judy regularly has 200 to 300 kids swimming for her."
Lee's coaching has also proved invaluable well beyond the summer months. The success of local "Y" and high school teams, including the 42- year reign of the Westfield High School Boys' as Union County Cham- pions, has clearly been aided by the 14-year winning streak of the Memo- rial Pool team.
"Judy is a great person," says Bruce Johnson, former Westfield High School swimming coach, "her pro- gram at Memorial (Pool) is our life- blood. Every town should have a Judy Lee."
Johnson is the author of "The His- tory of New Jersey Interscholastic Swimming."
Stan Kaslusky, Executive Director of the Westfield "Y," and the parent of two former Memorial Pool swim- mers said, "The community owes Judy a great debt. She is a wonderful youth teacher who encourages chil- dren at all levels to learn new skills and be part of a team."
"Judy is completely dedicated to our pool and does an exceptional job," said Gildea. "I hope she stays another 25 years."
One of the factors behind Lee's success, it has been said, is her under- standing of the challenges a swimmer faces, since she herself continues to train and compete as a swimmer in the master's division. She often sees her former swimmers the second time around as master's level teammates.
When she is not coaching or swim- ming, Lee is a teacher and coach at the Pingry School in Martinsville.
Parents of swim team members proposed the celebration known as "Judy Lee Day" and friends, family members and former swimmers were invited.
Elite Fitness in Clark Offers Personal Touch for Members
OFFERING A PERSONAL TOUCH...Richard Tuma, Jr., left, and Marc Napoliello, owners of the Elite Fitness Center in Clark, offer a personal touch including advice and motivation to help members achieve their fitness goals.
Since their grand opening in Clark in early March, the Elite Fitness Center has offered members a full-service fitness center specializing in personal training and massages therapy.
The owners of Elite Fitness Center, Marc Napoliello and Richard Tuma, Jr., are both certified personal trainers with 10 years of experience in the fitness business. The center is located in the Clark Village Shopping Center on Raritan Road across from the A&P su- permarket.
The fitness center has all the latest equipment including treadmills, step- pers, bikes, free weights, circuit equip- ment and much more.
The two young owners have a concept they feel is unique and long overdue. They made their fitness center small and unintimidating with a family type of at- mosphere.
Upon sign-up each member receives a personal training session and a fitness evaluation. Also, one of the owners is always on site to give additional assis- tance, advice and motivation.
This is something the big name health clubs cannot always accomplish due to their size and member-to-trainer ratio.
"Sometimes bigger isn't always bet- ter," said Mr. Tuma.
Elite Fitness is located at 1055 Raritan Road and be reached at (732) 827-8663.
Thirty-three challenge matches took place through June 28 to pro- duce more noticeable changes in the following standings of the Westfield Tennis Association Women's Singles Ladder.
