VASERBERG HAMMERS 2 HOMERS

Poplar Over-Shadows Shady Lane, 10-7 By DAVID B. CORBIN

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Back-to-back two-RBI doubles by Kevin Newell and Dave Comer in the fifth inning darkened the evening for Shady Lane, but allowed Poplar Place to see its way clear to a 10-7 victory in Fanwood Old Men's Softball Associa- tion action at La Grande Park in Fanwood on June 23. Shady Lane did have its bright spots when Ralph Vaserberg ham- mered two towering home runs.

Poplar Place popped into the lead with three runs in the top of the first.

Mike Kelly drew a walk and Matt Smoot singled to right-center. Tom Smith loaded the bases with another walk, then John DeNoia brought Kelly home with a sacrifice fly to left field. Chris DeNoia duplicated John's action, then Steve Skaar wiggled an RBI single up-the-middle.

Shady Lane quickly tied the game in the bottom of the second. John Cholankeril and Phil Manno both singled, then Vaserberg launched his first home run over the left field netting.

Still in awe of Vaserberg's homer, Poplar Place failed to score in the second, then Shady Lane took the lead with a run in the bottom of the

Comcast Coolly Conquers Crest Refrigeration, 23-8

By DAVID B. CORBIN

Comcast took no prisoners and conquered Crest Refrigeration, 23-8, in Union County Seniors 50+ Soft- ball League action at Memorial Field in Westfield on June 22. The bom- bardment was led by Ron Torsiello and Ron Virgilio who banged in five RBI each.

Crest Refrigeration became the first team to break the ice by chipping out two in the top of the first. Rich Conzo chopped a single to left, Pat Garvey reached base on an error and John Kennedy banged an RBI single to center. Lee Brandyberry knocked in the second run by hitting into a fielder's choice.

Crest Refrigeration shivered when Comcast responded with eight runs in the bottom of the first. With one run already in and two men on base, Torsielli hooked a two-RBI double over third base. After Tony Yarusi singled and Norm Stumpf stomped an RBI single, Art Kopatz walked to load the bases. Mel Coren cracked an RBI single and Frank D'Amato added another RBI. Virgilio stepped to the plate and drilled a two RBI double to bring in the seventh and eighth runs.

Comcast chilled Crest Refrigera- tion in the second, then sounded off with three more in its half of the inning. After Jim Airey singled and Chuck Ramsthaler reached first on an error, Dom Deo punched an RBI single to right and Charles Lehman lashed an RBI single to left. Yarusi drove in the third run with a single to center.

Steamed by being behind 11-2, Crest Refrigeration sizzled with six runs in

the third. Conzo and Frank Catena both singled and Garvey hit into a force play at second. Kennedy dug in and knocked a two-RBI double to center. Sal Fillipone rapped an RBI single to left and Pete Salerto followed with a single. Paul Brody bopped an RBI single to center and Bob Oxner hacked a two-RBI single to left.

Not stiffened by the cool reception, Comcast pushed two more runs across the plate in the third. Kopatz and Coren singled, then Virgilio brought them both home with a double down the left field line.

For the remainder of the game, Crest Refrigeration's offensive pos- ture would be frozen. Singles by Ramsthaler and Deo enabled Torsiello to bring them both home with a single to left in the fourth. Kopatz, who singled in the fifth, was driven home when Virgilio nailed a single to left.

With Crest Refrigeration motion- less and in shock, Comcast sensed the kill and took final action in the sixth. Three-straight walks loaded the bases for Torsiello who tapped an RBI single. With the bases still loaded, Jim Malfetti mashed a triple to re- mote center and three more Comcast runners crossed the plate. Yarusi stepped forward and poked an RBI single to left, Stumpf singled, Kopatz reached base on an error to bring home Yarusi and Coren ended the massacre by hitting an RBI sacrifice fly to center to give Comcast a 15- run-rule win.

Trolley, Checchio's snapped to ac- tion in the bottom of the sixth. Freel poked a leadoff single in the gap in right-center, Chaparro hit a high, looping single to left-center, then Freel flew home on a mis- handled ball in the outfield. Failla drew a walk and Dave Buchwald launched a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Chaparro. With one man on base, Brady bashed a shot to right, Buchwald scored and Brady flew around the bases to

score the fourth run of the inning just as the relay throw bounced across home plate.

Leading 7-2, Checchio's brought in ace reliever Pete Lima to mute the Trolley's clang. After allowing a lead- off single to Marks, Lima silenced the next three Trolley batters. Checchio Chiropractic boosted its record to 8-2 while the Jolly Trolley skid to 3-7.

second when Manno singled home Brett Melworm, who had singled earlier in the inning. During the in- ning, John DeNoia of Poplar made the first of his several great sliding catches in left field.

Shady Lane increased its lead to 6- 3 in the third. Vaserberg walked, Ron Greco reached first safely on an error and Vaserberg alertly scored. Kevin Maloney mashed a double down the left field line and Greco sped home for the score.

Poplar responded with a run in the fourth when Kelly hacked a single to center to drive in Carlos Vasquez, then took an 8-6 lead in the fifth. Smith walked, John DeNoia singled and Skaar walked to load the bases. Kevin Newell drilled his two-run double, then Comer followed with a two-run double to the left field screen.

Stunned by the sudden turn of events, Shady Lane recovered to pick up a run in the fifth with Vaserberg's second home run over the left-center field netting. From that point on how- ever, Shady Lane would no longer be able to mount an offensive attack.

Poplar Place, however, added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh. John DeNoia reached base on an error and Chris DeNoia looped a single over third to bring John in to score. Skaar slashed a single and Comer sacrificed Chris DeNoia home with a fly to left.

Vaserberg turned in several fine field- ing plays at second base, including a brilliant second-to-first double play in the sixth inning. John DeNoia contin- ued to dazzle everyone with two more impressive catches in the seventh.

Poplar Place upped its record to 3- 6 while Shady Lane slipped to 2-5.

White Sox Beat Cardinals; Win Major League Title

The Westfield Baseball League Major League World Series featured the White Sox, coached by Bob Hearon, against the Cardinals, coached by Tim Power. The table was set for an exciting series as the teams played three one-run games dur- ing the regular season.

The fans were not to be denied. It was a best of three series and after two very close games it came down to a third and deciding game. The White Sox got on the board first when Sam Kim blasted a two- run home run over the right field fence.

The Cardinals grabbed the best seat in an early-inning sea-saw battle by taking a 3-2 lead in the second inning. Adam Gerkens, Matt Sofka and Bryan Power provided the heavy artillery in the inning for the Cardinals. The White Sox retali- ated and went ahead for good with three

runs in the fourth inning. A strong pitch- ing performance by Josh Dennerlein kept the Cardinals in check.

The White Sox later increased their lead with clutch hits by Billy Hearon, Tommy Riccuiti, Alex Crawford, An- drew Skoller, Paul Cobuzzi and Dan Clark. Although the Cardinals continued to climb back, the win was clinched for the Sox with a two run home run by Jesse Abramowitz.

Other players with big hits for the Cardinals included Mike Huber and Matt Calvarusso.

Other contributors for the White Sox were Mike Checchio, Tommy DelDuca and Kevin Hopson. Congratulations to all.

third to load the bases. Lombardi lashed a sacrifice fly to right-cen- ter, scoring Manzi, but a heads-up double play initiated by Chaos shortstop Penzak prevented the Mattress Factory from having a very productive inning.

Not confident with its 4-3 lead, Chaos scored another run in the bot- tom of the fifth when Keller thumped a triple to deep center and alertly scored on an off-course throw. Kervick gave up a single to Factor in the sixth and Manzi shut down all three Chaos batters in the bottom of the sixth.

Kervick endured a final inning threat by the Factory, giving up singles to Cheety and Rowland, but allowed no runs to score and Chaos had se- cured the victory. Chaos upped its record to 7-2 while the Mattress Fac- tory slipped to 7-4 .
