School Television Studio to Air Underage Drinking Program
WESTFIELD – “Teenage Drinking: The High School Perspective,” a live television program dealing with underage drinking, will be broadcast from Westfield High School’s Television Studio on Thursday, January 7. It can be seen on Channel 36 beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Westfield High School Principal Dr. Robert G. Petix and Maureen Mazzarese, Student Assistance and Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC) at the high school, will host the program.
Viewers will have the opportunity to call in with questions during the broadcast at (908) 789-4622. Questions may also be faxed to (908) 789-4230.
According to Dr. Petix and Ms. Mazzarese, the purpose of the program will be to provide an interactive opportunity for parents and members of the community to learn more about teenage drinking, and to identify ways they can be of help to the children of Westfield.
A SPECIAL TELECAST…Principal of Westfield High School, Dr. Robert G. Petix, and Student Assistance and Substance Abuse Counselor, Maureen Mazzarese, plan the upcoming telecast of their TV 36 program “Teenage Drinking: The High School Perspective.” It will be aired on Thursday, January 7, on Channel 36 at 7:30 p.m. Viewers will have the opportunity to present questions during the broadcast by calling (908) 789-4622, or by faxing (908) 789-4230.
Among the topics to be featured during the telecast are a discussion of the role that the Westfield Public Schools’ comprehensive substance abuse education program plays in kindergarten through grade 12.
Ms. Mazzarese, who offers workshops for parents as part of her SAC role at the high school, said she hopes that disseminating information about teenage drinking, and identifying resources for obtaining help in the school and in the community, will be of assistance to parents.
“While the single most important influence on our children is the home, that does not mean that parents can do it alone,” stated Ms. Mazzarese.
“The job of parents and the school is the same in many ways,” commented Dr. Petix, who conceived the idea for the television program and collaborated with Ms. Mazzarese on the design of the telecast.
“While the goal of helping our children become successful is the same for the school and parents,” added Dr. Petix, “we approach this important responsibility from different ways.”
