Local Syncro Swimmers Train At Olympic Center Devil Bowler Baum Rolls
Near Perfect (299) Game
The Westfield High School Bowling Team started its season by participating in the Warren Wheeler Invitational Tournament held at Plaza Lanes in Madison on December 12, and came away with their best showing since bowling was started in 1980.
Leading the way for the Blue Devils were senior caption Brett Rosenblatt and Evan Baum. Rosenblatt rolled a 711 series with games of 227, 252 and 232. He rolled a six game total of 1,270. Baum thrilled the crowd with an opening game of 299, followed by scores of 215 and 225 for a 739 series.
The 299 was the second highest game in Westfield history and the 739 series was the highest total surpassing Scott Bridgeman, who had a 731 total in 1997. Bridgeman still owns the only 300 game in Westfield history.
Baum also won a $100 scholarship to the Dick Ritger bowling camp
which he promptly donated to a Westfield student for the summer of 1999. High School bowling coach Mike Tirone will decide who the lucky winner will be, The scholarship was awarded to Baum for the high game of the day.
The team also made Westfield history as they rolled the high three series ever with games of 1043, 1044 and 1035 for a 3,122 series. Tirone stated that “the lanes were dressed for high scoring and we were one of the five teams that took advantage by adjusting our shots.”
Joining Rosenblatt and Baum were Tim Caprario, Jeff Diamond, Chris Marona, Hugh Sinclair and Dan Rock. Caprario chipped in with two high games of 206 and 217 while Rock also had two high games of 214 and 218. Diamond rolled a high game of 202.
Two members of the Westfield “Y” Aquaduck Synchronized Swimming team, Becky Zakian and Megan Lesko, recently traveled to the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center for two days of intense training.
Duke Zielinski Corporation, an international performance systems company, ran the clinic. The primary focuses were on developing various synchronized swimming skills, along with mental, flexibility, and strength training.
Sarah and Karen Josephson, former Olympic and World Synchronized Swimming champions taught much of the session. While there, the girls were also able to observe Olympic bob sledders, speed skaters, and freestyle skiers.
Zakian and Lesko had to achieve a qualifying routine score during 1998
competitions and know senior level figures to be able to participate in this clinic. They are following in the footsteps of other Aquaduck team members, as this is the fifth year that the Aquaducks have been eligible to send swimmers to this event.
The girls benefit in many ways from this experience including building confidence, increasing their skills, and being able to see the top-level competitors in their age group. The course pushed Lesko and Zakian to basalt out of their comfort zone, set stretch goals, and create new challenges for themselves for the 1999 season. Working together, they were able to put much of what they learned into action.

Blue Devil Icemen Place Third in Holiday Tourney
By TIM CAPRARIO
Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times
The Westfield High School ice hockey team faced off against rival Summit in the semi-finals of the Holiday Tournament at Warananco Park on December 15. The teams were evenly matched throughout the first two periods. However, Summit took control after that and earned a 7-3 victory.
Senior forward, Ronnie Kashlak, continued his bid for a state scoring title by connecting twice, one in the first period and again in the second. Kashlak’s second point pulled Westfield to within one goal going into the third period.
Unfortunately, Summit took complete control in the period. In those
fifteen minutes, Summit scored five times while Westfield could only manage one goal. Senior defenseman, Mike Bird, converted for Westfield. The loss dropped the team’s record to 1-5.
According to senior forward, Mike Friedman, “We had a lot of confidence in the first two periods, but we lost our focus in the third, and it cost us the game. We have to start playing like a team because the next few games to come are crucial for our season.”
Westfield bounced back from its devastating loss to Summit with a 8-0 trouncing of arch rival, Cranford. From the opening whistle, Westfield dominated every aspect of the game. Goals, shots and checks were controlled by the Blue Devils throughout the match.
Senior assistant-captain, Josh Falcone, said, “It was a good experience for our team and our fans to beat a rival. We played a strong game both offensively and defensively. Hopefully, we can use this win to turn our season around.”
It took a mere 26 seconds for Westfield to take lead. Kashlak fed Bird for the first of his four goals. Two minutes later, Falcone scored
Montclair Swimmers Sink F-SPY Piranhas, 110-98
The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Y boys’ swim team, fought a valiant battle against a strong Montclair Y team on December 12, but ended up one relay short, losing 110-98. The Piranha boys had the guts and power but just not quite the depth to take it all the way.
F-SPY opened the meet with a display of force, sweeping, every Individual Medley event. Victors in the 100-yard I. M. were Brendan Jones (1:169) and Eric Swenson (1:01.66), while in the 200 I. M., Ryan Hauptman (2:17.19) and Chris Karelus (2:07.77) captured firsts. Deryck Middleton posted his best time in the 11-12 I. M. and Mike Cinkewicz turned it on in the final 50 of his 200 to surge into second place for the 15-18’s.
Eight-and-under Gordon Peeler notched a victory to open the freestyle events and Matt Morgan and Luke Russo also swam their best times. In the 9-10 50-free, Scotty Marino and John Moscowitz clinched second and third while James LiVolsi posted his best time. Chris Leone took second for the 11-12’s with his fastest effort. Kevin Bobenchik took first in the 1314 100-free (55:79), Marc Cello also win a personal best.
In the breaststroke, John Kosenick had a best-time swim for the junior Piranhas and B. Jones won again for the 9-10’s (40.77). E. Swenson and D. Middleton locked up second and third in the 11-12 50-breast, while Steve Swenson outtouched his opponent to win in the
13-14 100 (1:12.00). Backstrokers Neil Merchant, Erick Walken and Danny Selert all swam well for the 8 and-unders, and Brian Gartner notched a victory (30.57) for the 11-12’s. K. Bobenchik followed with his second win of the day, a besttime finish in e 13-14 l00-back (1:01.63) and M. Cinkewicz had another strong race for the 15-18’s to take second.
Knowing the meet was still up for grabs, the Piranhas came out fighting in the butterfly events. S. Marino put everything he had into the 9-10 50 to take second, while B. Gartner (28.73) and David Hauptman locked up first and third in the 11-12 50-fly. R. Hauptman flew to a first for the 13-14’s (1:03.44), and, for the seniors, Karelus (57.06) and Frank Eaton snagged another first and third to put F-SPY up by two points.
Montclair’s depth served them well in the relays. The Piranhas needed two to clinch the meet and could only win one, The 11-12 team of Middleton, D. Hauptman, Garner and E. Swenson posted a winning time of 1:48. 32 in their 200-free event.

to increase the lead to 2-0. On Westfield’s third goal, Kashlak was on the receiving end as he converted for one of his three goals.
The second and third periods continued to show Westfield’s domination over the Cougars. Bird scored three more times, once on a twoman disadvantage. Kashlak tallied two more goals.
In addition to total scoring, Westfield’s defense came up big, holding Cranford to only 21 shots. Starting junior goalie, Chad Puschel, and backup goalie, Erik Lund, combined efforts for 21 saves and a shutout over the Cougars.
The defensive team was lead by seniors, Kevin Anton, Mike Bird, and Joe Petruccelli as well as jun
ior, Matt O’Neill. Sophomores, Ryan O’Donohue and Chris Schwartz, also contributed to the defense.
Anton optimistically remarked, “Our defense is getting better every game. We work hard in practice on different defensive drills, and it came together in the match against Cranford.”
The win gave Westfield a third place finish in the Holiday Tournament and increased their record to 2-5. Westfield looks to climb back to the .500 mark this week with games against Toms River, Stienert, and Chatham.
Lund commented, “Realistically, we have to take each game one at a time, and we have to set goals for ourselves. Our most important goal right now is to be .500 by January so we could qualify for the states without a struggle.”
