CYAN YELLOW MAGENTA BLACK Franzone was stopped just inches

from the endzone. Despite the misfortune, the Raiders held their heads up and entered Union on Thanksgiving Day with a relatively healthy team. The Farmers, who have been tough all year, were stingy with their turf, but Franzone hit Blair Woodward with a 67-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, then hit him again with a 10yard touchdown pass with just :27 remaining in the game to make the score 21-20. The Raiders took a winner’s approach and went for the two-point conversion, but the Farmers stopped them just inches shy of the endzone.

Although a few inches may have affected their record negatively, the Raiders turned in positive numbers

both offensively and defensively. Jones was amazing as he rushed for 1,376 yards on 215 carries for a 6.4 average and scored 11 touchdowns. Jones also had five pass receptions for 77 yards with one touchdown. He had 10 kickoff returns for 299 yards with one touchdown and four punt returns for 80 yards to accumulate 1,832 total yards. In addition, he tossed a 39-yard touchdown pass.

Franzone completed 47 passes for 653 yards and five touchdowns. He rushed for 153 yards and one touchdown and kicked 12 points after touchdown. As a punter, Franzone totaled 1,042 yards on 31 punts for a 33.6 average.

Fullback McDaniel rushed 55 times for 183 yards. Senior Matt McCarthy

wrist lock. Senior Tony Melendez jumped the score to 18-9 with a fall over Bryan Garrison at 130. After a scoreless first period, Melendez scored two points on a turn-in to a single leg trip. Both wrestlers then exchanged reversals, then Melendez executed the death grip, pinning Garrison with a single-leg grapevine and a chin chancery in 3:59.

The Panthers crept back to tie the score 18-18, winning by decision at 135 and by fall at 140 from state contender Craig Frost, but junior Mike Grabel put the Raiders back in front, 21-18, with an 10-5 decision over Garry Taluba.

Taluba scored a takedown, then Grabel escaped as the first period ended. Grabel took a 4-2 lead when he clamped Taluba with an arm bar near-fall in the second period. In the third period with the score, 4-3, Grabel added a penalty point, an escape and two takedowns.

The Panthers were stunned when the Raiders won the next two bouts to take a 30-18 team lead. Senior Marc Ricca, at 152, clamped Nick Tokarski in 3:14, after scoring on a switch reversal.

At 160, Matt Oley picked up three team points with an 8-7 decision over Shawn Kuchnowski. After being taken down three times in the first period, Oley found himself behind, 6-3, entering the second period. Oley cut the lead to 6-5 with a takedown, then scored an escape and a takedown in the third while yielding a penalty point.

The Panthers won by decision at 171 and by forfeit at 189 to narrow the score to 30-27. The pivotal bout had now arrived. If the Raiders would win by decision, the victory would belong to them.

In all sports, there are times of immense pressure and much credit should always be given to the ath

letes who endure those situations. Raider Gary Cousar and Panther Nate Mooney faced off at the 215-lb class.

Cousar scored first on a takedown, Mooney escaped, then added a takedown, but Cousar tied the score, 3-3, with an escape at the end of the first period. Cousar picked up a penalty point, then added a reversal, but Mooney also got a reversal. Just before the end of the period, both wrestlers exchanged reversals.

Cousar held a slim 8-7 lead in the final period. He had Mooney in a loose single grapevine and attempted to turn him to his back. Mooney shed the grapevine and Cousar slipped to his back. Mooney took advantage of the situation and recorded the fall in 4:49.

When the Raiders were unable to present a wrestler at heavyweight, Panther Mike Munoz, a very talented wrestler, walked to the center of the mat to receive his forfeit.
