Tamaques Teachers Discover Theory of Many Intelligences

WESTFIELD – Teachers at Tamaques Elementary School in Westfield recently participated in an information session to update their skills and knowledge.

Instructors learned the Howard Gardner theory of Multiple Intelligences. Mr. Gardner first described his theory in his book “Frames of Mind” in 1983.

He proposed that teachers can tap into what he called the “eight intelligences” to help students achieve.

These intelligences, according to the author, include verbal/linguistic, vi

sual/spatial, logical/mathematical, musical/rhythmic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, bodily/kinesthetic, and naturalist.

Tamaques School Principal Salvatore J. DeSimone initiated the staff development program based on Mr. Gardner’s theory. Lynda Fote and Michael Paccione from Learning Plus presented the program over three afternoons at the school.

During these sessions, the teachers worked together to understand the intelligences and discover classroom applications.
