Dr. Patrick J. Kennedy, Consultant; Professor Emeritus at Seton Hall
Dr. Patrick J. Kennedy, 68, of Westfield, a Professor Emeritus at Seton Hall University in South Orange, died on Monday, August 3, at home.
Born in Manhattan in 1929, he was raised in The Bronx and had moved to Westfield in 1964.
During his 36-year tenure at Seton Hall, Dr. Kennedy held the positions of Director of Admissions, Vice President of Student Affairs, Director of International Programs, Professor and Chairman of the Political Science Department, and University Fulbright Advisor.
He was active as a committeeman in eight national professional associations, and two New Jersey professional associations.
Dr. Kennedy served as a consultant for the United States Information Agency, for the New Jersey Department of Higher Education, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Universities, and as a member of the National Evaluation Project in Washington, D.C.
He attended Francis Xavier High School and Cathedral College in Manhattan, and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1951, a master’s degree in education in 1956, and a Doctoral Degree in Philosophy in 1972, all from Fordham University in The Bronx.
He served as a United States Army medic during the Korean Conflict, stationed at Beaumont Hospital in Fort Bliss, Texas.
Dr. Kennedy participated in international conferences in London, England; Beijing and Shanghai, China; Bangkok, Thailand; Auckland, New Zealand; Taipei, Taiwan; Bombay, India, and the East-West Center, Hawaii.
He was a visiting lecturer at universities in India and Taiwan.
Dr. Kennedy was the author of two books on the educational systems of Taiwan and of New Zealand, respectively, and at the time of his death was at work on a book about the political science of China. He was also the author of many scholarly articles.

Edward C. Schaffernoth, 86, Fire Captain; Local Farm Owner Had Received Awards
Edward C. Schaffernoth, 86, of Scotch Plains died on Sunday, August 2, at Ashbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains.
Born in Springfield, Mr. Schaffernoth lived in Scotch Plains for many years.
He was co-owner of Schaffernoth Brothers Farm in Scotch Plains with his brother, Theodore Schaffernoth.
Mr. Schaffernoth served as President and Vice President of the Union County Board of Agriculture. He also served on the Cook College Board of Managers and was a member and past Director of the New Jersey Farm Bureau.
He was a New Jersey Soil Conservation District Supervisor and served multiple times as a delegate to the State Agricultural Convention.
Mr. Schaffernoth was honored with Distinguished Service Awards from both the Union County Board of Agriculture and the New Jersey Farm Bureau.
In 1991, he was honored by the State Board of Agriculture with a citation for Distinguished Service to New Jersey Agriculture.
Mr. Schaffernoth was also a charter member of the Scotch Plains Volunteer Fire Company, retiring with the rank of Captain.

William P. Loeffler, 2nd, 73, Mason; Active in ‘Y’ and American Legion
William P. Loeffler, 2nd, 73, of Scotch Plains died on Sunday, August 2, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Bristol, Connecticut, he had lived in Scotch Plains for 60 years.
Mr. Loeffler was a self-employed mason contractor.
He served in the United States Marine Corps as a Private First Class during World War II, from 1943 to 1945.
Mr. Loeffler was a member of the Fanwood Presbyterian Church in Fanwood.
He also was a member of the National Association of Home Builders; American Legion Post No. 209 in Scotch Plains, where he served as its Commander in 1950, and was active with the Scotch PlainsFanwood YMCA.
Surviving are his wife, Carmen Dolores Donatiu Loeffler; a son, William P. Loeffler, 3rd of Fanwood; four daughters, Rebecca Y. Garhart of Phillipsburg, Betty Ann Loeffler, Beverly Fiedler and Barbara Loeffler, all of Scotch Plains; a brother, George Miller, of Holland, Massachusetts; a sister, Betty Liana of Pennington; a step-sister, Carolyn Goodyear Pantezelos of Framingham, Massachusetts, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 4, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood. Interment was private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 325,
and the Recruiting Commands of the United States Air Force, Army and Marines.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Minogue Kennedy; three sons, Patrick Joseph Kennedy, Jr., John Francis Xavier Kennedy, and Brendan James Kennedy; a daughter, Kathleen Maura Caton, and three grandchildren.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held today, Thursday, August 6, at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. Interment will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements are being handled by the Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

In addition to his brother, he is survived by his wife, Evelyn Nowhark Schaffernoth; three daughters, Jean Reilly of Kinnelon, Lynn Robbins of Pittstown and Carol Aloisi of Bound Brook; two sisters, Martha Whalen of Westfield and Dorothy Upson of Medina, Ohio; four granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, August 5, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, followed by a Mass at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Mary Rose Lawless, 96
Mary Rose Grigletter Lawless, 96, of Delray Beach, Florida died on Monday, July 13, at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.
Born in Bayonne, she had been a resident of Delray Beach since 1973.
Mrs. Lawless was a member of the Calvary Episcopal Church in Bayonne, where she was a member of the Afternoon Guild and the choir. She was also a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Delray Beach, and of Rutherford Chapter No. 24 of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 60 years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lee Lawless, in 1976.
Surviving are three nieces, Gloria Stankus of Fanwood, Rae T. Kay of Southboro, Massachusetts and Grace McGuire of Edgewater, Florida.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 4, at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Bayonne. Eastern Star services were held on Monday, August 3. Interment took place at Bayview Cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Angelina A. Troiano, 85
Angelina A. Troiano, 85, of Scotch Plains died on Sunday, August 2, in the Raritan Health and Extended Care Center in Raritan.
Born in Plainfield, she had lived in Scotch Plains for most of her life.
Mrs. Troiano had owned Angie Pizzeria in Scotch Plains from 1963 until her retirement in 1968.
She was a member of the Scotch Plains Meridans and the Ladies of UNICO.
Surviving are a son, Joseph P. Troiano; three sisters, Albina Appezzato, Anna Romagnoli and Theresa Alvanos; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Barbara Arthur, 67
Barbara Henry Arthur, 67, of Matawan died on Wednesday, July 29, at Bayshore Hospital in Holmdel.
Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, she had lived in Fanwood and North Plainfield before moving to Matawan last year.
Mrs. Arthur had been employed as a secretary for the Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison for 14 years, retiring in 1993.
She was an alumna of the Pierce Business School in Philadelphia.
She was predeceased by her husband, John S. Arthur, in 1986, and by her daughters Jennifer Moravec in 1996 and Constance Towsley in 1997.
Surviving are two sons, Timothy Arthur of Houston, Texas and Dale Arthur of Keyport; her sister, Ann C. Henry of Matawan, and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 1, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Artist Dance, Jr., 55, of Plainfield died on Tuesday, July 28, at home.
Born in Norfolk, Virginia, he had lived in Plainfield for 45 years.
He was a truck driver for Clayton Block Corporation, formerly Best Block in Edison, for 18 years. He formerly operated A. Dance Jr. and Sons Trucking Company in Plainfield.
Surviving are two sons, Artist Dance, 3rd of Chicago and Christopher Dance of Plainfield; a brother, Joseph Dance of Plainfield; a sister, Sharon Dance of Westfield, and his former wife, Dolores Dance of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.

Anna Appezzato, 91
Anna Sbordone Appezzato, 91, a lifelong resident of Westfield, died on Wednesday, July 29, at Cranford Health and Extended Care.
Mrs. Appezzato was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, Antonio Appezzato, in 1990; a son, Felix Appezzato, in 1992, and a grandson, Joseph Sanguiliano, in 1991.
Surviving are four daughters, Rose Rossi, Frances Stoecker and Theresa Sanguiliano, all of Scotch Plains, and Carmella Lemko of Westfield; a brother, Carmen Sbordone of Westfield; a sister, Rose Di Girolamo of Westfield; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two greatgreat grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 1, at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains, followed by a Mass at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.

Elizabeth Ehret, a lifelong resident of Fanwood, died on Monday, August 3, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
She was born in Bayonne. Mrs. Ehret had been a secretary for Cunard Lines in New York City for 25 years before retiring 40 years ago.
She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert Ehret, in 1986.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, August 6, at 10 a.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood. Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.

Anthony De Cristofaro
Anthony L. De Cristofaro, 86, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, August 3, in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in The Bronx, he had lived in Plainfield before moving to Scotch Plains in 1922.
Mr. De Cristofaro had been a tool maker with the Hyatt Roller Bearing Corporation, a division of General Motors, in Clark for 21 years before retiring in 1976.
During the Depression, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was also a member of the United Auto Workers of America Union Local No. 736.
Surviving are his wife, Angeline De Cristofaro; a son, Louis De Cristofaro; a daughter, Shirley Hayeck; five brothers, Ralph De Cristofaro, Michael De Cristofaro, Marshall De Cristofaro, Bernard De Cristofaro and Dominick De Cristofaro; two sisters, Lena Ponturo and Grace Roglieri; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be offered today, Thursday, August 6, at 10 a.m. in St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, following the funeral from the Rossi Funeral Home, also in Scotch Plains.

Grace Walker, 84, of East Orange died on Monday, July 27, at Runnells Specialized Hospital in Berkeley Heights.
Born in Lawrenceville, Virginia, she had lived in New York City for 50 years before moving to East Orange.
She was a factory worker and a housekeeper.
She was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Lawrenceville.
Five sisters, two brothers and her son predeceased her.
Surviving are five nieces, Willie Mae Bartlett of Westfield, Mildred Wynn of Lawrenceville, Constance Walker of Alberta, Virginia, Shirley Johnson of Scotch Plains and Gladys Michael of Plainfield, and 11 nephews, Richard Graves, Howard Graves and George Graves, all of Plainfield, Harry Graves and Joseph Graves, both of Westfield, James Graves of Scotch Plains, Jesse Graves of Hampton, Virginia, Thomas Graves of Arizona, Hilliard Gee of Plainfield, Daniel Gee of Lawrenceville, Virginia, and Theodore Walker of St. Albans, New York.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 1, at the Plinton-Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.

Alice Mae Jones, 80, of Scotch Plains died on Sunday, July 26, at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark.
Born in Lincolnton, Georgia, Mrs. Jones had lived in Scotch Plains for 58 years.
She worked as a housekeeper in the Union County area for the past 50 years.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the Lawes Tabernacle Temple Church of Living God in Newark for 14 years, and served as a church mother, missionary and evangelist.
She was formerly a member of the Warren Temple Church of Living God in Fanwood.
Surviving are two sons, Charles Jones of Westfield and Robert Jones of Scotch Plains; a daughter, Deresa L. Woods of Plainfield; two brothers, John Lee Martin of Huntsville, Alabama and Willie Martin of Plainfield; four sisters, Marjorie Marshall, Essie Smith, Mildred Wescott and Mary Wright, all of Plainfield; 13 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
