Westfield 12’s Edge Union; Beat West Orange, 8-0, 4-2

The Westfield twelve-year-old white team pulled out a 9-8 extra inning squeaker against Union, then destroyed West Orange, 8-0, in baseball action.

Westfield gave up two runs in the first inning, but answered back with three runs in its half of the inning as Joe Wisniewski hit a two run homer following Adam Gerckens single. Joe Korfmacher walked and scored on Matt Calvaruso’s single.

In the third inning, Union scored three more runs to take a 5-3 lead. Westfield came back with one in the fourth as Mike Streaman singled to open the inning and scored on Steve Rizzetta’s RBI.

Mike Paragano came on in relief in the fifth for starting pitcher Korfmacher and surrendered one run. Trailing 6-4 with one out in the last inning, Paragano and Rich Moran both walked, then were driven home by a clutch single by Nick Gismondi.

In the top of the seventh, Union had two hits but failed to score as catcher, Gismondi threw out the leadoff hitter trying to steal second. The game was suspended after the seventh and play began a few weeks later. Streaman came on to pitch in the eighth inning. Neither teams scored in the inning thanks to a game saving, over the shoulder catch by center fielder Korfmacher.

In the ninth, Union took a one run lead but Westfield came right back as Jack Joyce led off the inning with a walk and scored on a big two out double by Korfmacher. In the tenth, Union scored again but the white team came right back as Streaman and Paragano singled and Rich Moran was intentionally walked to set up the force at home. Gismondi doubled to knock in two runs to win the game 9-8. Streaman won his fourth game of the season.

In the second game Paragano pitched a one hit shutout as Westfield won 8-0. Paragano had a no hitter until one out in the final inning.

The white team scored one run in the second on singles by Calvaruso and Streaman, another in the third as Gerckens and Korfmacher singled and three more times in the fourth. Paragano opened the fourth with a double, followed by Streaman’s walk. After a double steal, Josh Dennerlein had a two-RBI single, then scored on Moran’s single.

Westfield scored three insurance runs in the fifth as Gerckens walked and Korfmacher singled before Joe Wisniewski’s three run homer.

In the final game of the season, Westfield defeated West Orange 4-2, behind the strong pitching of Korfmacher and Gerckens. West Orange scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning, but Westfield came right back with a big inning as Gerckens led off the fifth with a single. Mike Checchio followed with a ground ball to second and the speedy Gerckens beat the throw to second, putting runners on first and second. It was the third consecutive time that Checchio had reached base.

Josh Gerchens and Checchio pulled off a double steal as Gerckens slid under the tag of the third baseman. Adam Gerckens then singled in his brother to tie the score. Wisniewski then cleared the bases with a long three-run homer way over the fence in left center field to give Westfield a three run lead.

Adam Gerckens came on to relive Korfmacher in the bottom of the fifth and picked up his first save of the season. Chris Paragano came up with a fine defensive play on third, earlier in the game to prevent a West Orange run.

Michael Smith, 14, of Westfield is joined by his teammates from The Berkeley Aquatic Club after they shattered the New Jersey State record in the 13-14 year old Medley Relay at the New Jersey Junior Olympics held on July 24-26 at Rutgers University. Pictured, from the left, are Brett Nicholes (freestyle), Nick Cirella (breaststroke), Matt Kane (butterfly,) and Michael Smith ( backstroke ). The boys took five seconds off the existing record and established a new time of 1:59 97.
