Another football score with the Hideaway jumping out early and never looking back. The Hideaway is still licking their wounds from the end of the year slump that knocked them out of the top seed. Pepco vows to rebound.

Down 8-1, the spirited A. J. Jersey squad began to rally in the sixth. Meade hooked a single over third and Beehner bashed a double down the third base line. Hobson hammered a two-RBI single to center and Robinson rapped a double to center to send home Hobson, narrowing the score to 8-4.

Jerry Hughes poked a single to center for Chaos in the bottom of the sixth and scored on Chuck Harcourt’s single to right. A. J. Jersey was now down to its final inning. Tony Ciullo zinged a leadoff double down the third baseline and Lipshitz flied out to center to move Ciullo to third. Meade chopped an infield single to short, to drive in Ciullo, but Kervick, the Chaos pitcher, put out the fire before it could rage out of control.

an RBI single past second to give Hunter Avenue a 6-3 lead.

Feeling insulted by Hunters’ show of power, the Road gang seethed and roared with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Road men pulled out all their tricks. Eric Birnbaum blazed a double to left, Don Weber moved Birnbaum to third with a sacrifice bunt, then Culinane laid down a perfect squeeze bunt single to score Birnbaum. Buckwald banged a double to center and Tim Walsh patiently drew a base-on-balls to load the bases. Danielle also walked to send home Culinane and then Joe Walsh grounded out to short to bring Buchwald in to score.

Mike Ewing whacked a double but Hunter failed to score in the fifth, then the Road gang’s offense went back to work. Espenshade opened with a walk, Birnbaum singled and Weber loaded the bases with a walk. Culinane hit an RBI sacrifice fly to right and Buchwald followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to center to give Russell Road an 8-6 lead.

The Hunters fired two shots in the sixth with singles by Wein and May; however no runs were scored. After Mike Ewing made a “Ken Griffey” leaping snag against the screen in left field, Joe Walsh launched his thunderous solo shot to give Russell Road a 9-6 lead.

Russell Road held Hunter to only a single by John Welsh in the seventh

and upped its record to 8-5. Hunter Avenue slipped to 10-5 and remain in a battle with the Road gang for the second-place spot.

Poplar Place Pounces Upon Shady Lane in Crucial Game

the inning and all three batters were retired, but Poplar roared in with three runs at the top of the fifth. DeNoia deflected an unusual single off the pitcher’s mound. Skaar got aboard safely on an error, then stole second to put both runners in scoring position. Smoot walked to load the bases, Kevin Newell sacrificed DeNoia home, then Skaar and Smoot scooted home on a double error in left field.

Kevin Walsh opened the bottom of the fifth with a single to left and Manno followed with a single to right, but Shady Lane failed to score. Poplar Place returned the favor by failing to score in the sixth.

Hope was slipping away for Shady Lane. After Breuninger hooked a single to left to start the bottom of the sixth, the next three batters lined out. The Poplar offense was also silenced in the seventh when Shady Lane pulled off a smooth, third-to-secondto-first double play.

The inning of reckoning was upon them and Shady Lane desperately needed a miracle. Matt Betau and Doug Heintz both reached base safely on errors. Walsh lined out to left and Manno mangled a two-RBI single to right-center and moved to third on an error. Joe Viviano popped out to second, Vasserberg bashed a single to left and Al Betau popped out to left for the final out.

Each team shifted its record to 6-9, but Poplar Place gained the edge in head-on confrontation.

Mattress Factory Bounces Checchio’s in Semis, 20-5

By MICHAEL P. BABIK

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Emotions ran high on Monday, July 27, as the Mattress Factory came from behind to beat Checchio’s in Game 2 of a five game series. The Factory is just one game away from sweeping the series and moving into the final round of the Westfield Men’s Softball League Playoffs.

Checchio’s started strongly with solid pitching by Manny Perez. Mattress Factory’s Kevin Zippler hit into a short-to-second out, Tim Walsh hit into a fielder’s choice, and Clint Factor and Scott Johnson recorded outs to end the top of the first and bring up the hard hitting Checchio’s.

Joey Dasti walked, as Jack Failla, Gary Reuben, and Frank Malta singled. Malta, Failla, and Dasti all scored, giving Checchio’s a 3-0 lead after the first inning.

The Factory’s Tom Perolla answered with his single. Ron Shovlin and Mike Verano flied out, to the outfield. Chris Masterson and Perolla scored, and Gary Nicorak got to third before the side was retired, giving Checchio’s a thin one-run lead.

They were unable to pad their lead further in the second as Pat Brady was thrown out at first, Manny Perez flied out to center field, and Orlando Rivera was thrown out at second.

The Factory exploded in the third, springing off the floundering Checchio’s and scoring six runs. Kevin Zippler doubled to start the inning, and both Tim Walsh and Clint Factor singled to get on base. Scott Johnson smashed a grand slam home run, giving Mattress a 6-3 edge and starting a scoring rampage that continued through the game. Perolla and Chris Masterson scored, thanks in part to the hard hitting of Nicorak and Kevin Lombardi.

As the game went on and early dusk fell on Tamaques Park, Checchio’s staged its final comeback. Dasti singled and Jack Failla walked. Solid hitting from Gary Ruban, who singled and a sacrifice fly helped bring in both Dasti and Failla who pulled the score 8-5, the closest they would come.

In the fifth, the Factory produced five more runs, further sealing their victory. Masterson singled to lead off the inning. Both Gary Nicorak and Lombardi walked. Singles by Zippler

and Tim Walsh allowed Masterson to score. Nicorak was tagged out at home to register the first out, but Lombardi’s collision with the catcher was successful, bringing in another run. Checchio’s pitching weakened as Zippler, Tim Walsh, and Factor scored, bringing in a total of five runs before the Factory put their bats down.

Chechio’s, however, was unable to dent the bouncing Mattress. Although Dasti singled, fly outs and a tag out at first on Failla, quickly ended the fifth.

If the fifth inning was bad for Checchio’s the sixth inning could only be worse, with the Mattress Factory raking in an additional six runs. Verano singled and Masterson got to first on a second baseman error. Verano, Masterson, Nicorak, and Lombardi all scored, with Lombardi making his way in on a bad throw at the plate. Zippler would also pull in another run, his third of the day. Clint Factor was left on third as the side retired, with a score of 18-5.

In the bottom of the sixth, three Checchio batters in a row recorded outs to again end the inning, scoreless. In the seventh, Factory’s Lombardi hit a two run homer. A triple by Checchio’s Orlando Rivera was not enough to do any damage to the victorious Mattress Factory, who left Tamaques feeling pretty good about themselves, with a 20-5 win.
