Coren chopped an RBI single to center and Airey drove in another run by deflecting the ball off the second baseman. Canales and Melia followed with RBI singles and Virgilio hit an RBI sacrifice fly. Lehman put Comcast ahead, 16-9, with an RBI single to left.

The events which were to occur in the top of the fifth would put Comcast “on the blink”. UCNB began a “merry-go-round” of 11 runs which sent Comcast spinning out of control. Renaud and Catino both singled, Arkus and Zimkus both walked to send the first run across the plate. Biondi bopped an RBI single to left, then Schlachman spanked a two-RBI single off the pitcher.

With four runs already in, Cohn bashed an RBI single to center, then Grossman hammered a three-run homer to remote right field. O’Rourke reached first on an error, Bill Winship sailed a single over short and Renaud loaded the bases

with a walk. Catino dug in and curled a two-run single over second, then Arkus hopped an RBI single to left to give UCNB a 20-16 lead.

Comcast still had visions of victory and responded with three runs. D’Martino walked, Spanier singled to left, then Stumpf loaded the bases with a single. Ramsthaler sacrificed to right to score D’Martino and Doe dumped a two-RBI single over first.

Ahead only 20-19, UCNB wanted to protect its interest and added three insurance runs in the sixth. Schlachman walked, Cohn deposited a single to center and Grossman was intentionally walked. O’Rourke stepped up and rocked a three-run double to left field.

Comcast narrowed the score to 23-21 in the bottom of the sixth when Canales and Melia both singled and Lehman brought them both home with a single to left. Due to the constant barrage of scoring and the incessant tension that had been created, both offenses grew weary and ceased to score in the final inning.

advantage. Hoelzel singled in the fifth for the “Gang” and Litterio singled for the “Posse”, but the score remained, 6-3.

Murano fired a single shot over second to begin the sixth inning for St. James, Stan Grausso grounded a single up-the-middle and Maher ripped an RBI single to right. After Antoine drilled an RBI single to center, the “Gang” had succeeded in weakening the “Posse’s” blockade and narrowed the score to 6-5.

Being in a state of disorder, St. Thomas could only retaliate with a single from Pepe, then the St. James

“Gang” went on a final offensive in the seventh. Matuska mashed a leadoff single to center, Joe Scarfuto reached first on a throwing error and Hoelzel hopped a single to left as Matuska scored the tying run. Perrine sacrificed Scarfuto home with the leading run, then Murano hammered a two-RBI single to right to break the “Gang” free, 9-6.

The “Posse” went in pursuit, but the horses were too slow and the St. James “Gang” was once again on the loose.

Central Jersey Stars Win Third Straight State Title

The Central Jersey Stars (CJS) Under-23 womens soccer team easily defeated the Mercer Elite, 10-0, at Houlihan Field in Westfield on August 2 and captured its third consecutive state soccer title. Mercer Elite’s only other defeat, 2-0, was also to the Stars on July 19. In addition, Keith Hertell, who has been Head Coach for the Stars over the past 15 years, coached his final game, to win yet another championship.

Amy Coccaro, a 1998 Westfield High School graduate, scored a goal and, along with former Scotch PlainsFanwood High School standout Ann Keegan, controlled the midfield. Coccaro will be attending Boston University and Keegan is presently attending St. Bonaventure in Olean, New York.

Westfield High School senior Jessica Lutkenhouse also scored a goal in the first half to demoralize Mercer Elite. Lutkenhouse was a major factor in keeping the ball constantly in the Mercer Elite keeper’s territory.

Former Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School defensive player Elizabeth Frame contributed a goal for the Stars. Frame anchored the defense and quickly rejected any Mercer Elite penetration into Stars’ territory.

Frame attends West Virginia University in Morgantown.

Under Coach Hertell, the Central Jersey Stars have won more league championships than any other women’s team in the last 15 years. Presently, 22 Central Jersey Stars play collegiate soccer. Hertell holds an Advanced National Diploma, Brazilian Coaching license (Sao Paulo) and is also a FIFA licensed coach. Presently, Hertell is the girls Head Coach at Livingston High School.

Showing their deep appreciation for his dedication and efforts, the CJS girls held a surprise party for Hertell after the game.
