Campaign for Council Seats LAUNCHING CAMPAIGN… The 1998 Scotch Plains Republican ticket for the

Township Council, left to right, are: incumbent Councilman Robert E. Johnston, Paulette Coronato and James Fawcett. They were picked by the local GOP out of a field of five candidates.

Inascreeningthat tookplaceonMarch 25, the Scotch Plains Republican Committee has selected three candidates for TownshipCouncil.

Out of a field of five candidates, the Republican Party selected incumbent Robert E. Johnston and newcomers PauletteCoronato andJamesFawcettas its candidates for the Tuesday, November 3,election. TheywillfaceDemocrats Franklin P. Donatelli, Tarquin Jay Bromley and Geri Morgan Samuel. Republicans hold a 5- 0 majority on the council.

Mrs. Coronato and Mr. Fawcett are running in place of current Mayor Joan Papen and Councilwoman Irene Schmidt, both of whom are not seeking reelection.

Councilman Johnston was first appointed totheCouncilto fillavacancyin 1993. He was elected to a full four- year term in 1994 and served as Mayor in 1995.Priortohis serviceontheCouncil, Mr. Johnston was a member of the township'sPlanning Boardfornearly20 years.A33- year residentofScotchPlains, Councilman Johnston is a retired Telecommunications Manager of the Exxon Corporation.

Councilman Johnston said of his selection, "Itiscertainlyan honorformeto beselectedonceagain asacandidatefor theTownship CouncilontheRepublican ticket. I have enjoyed serving on the Council over the past five years. Under Republicanleadership, wehavehadmany accomplishments.Iwill runonourrecord ofachievement."

Mrs. Coronato has been a member of thetownship BoardofAdjustmentsince 1994andhas servedontheArchitectural Review Committee since 1995. She servedonthe PlanningBoardfrom1985 to 1990 and was a member of the Environmental Commission from 1986 to 1990.

Besides herinvolvementontownship committees,Mrs.Coronato isapastPresident ofthe UnionCountyMedicalSociety Auxiliary and a former Chairman of the New Jersey State Board of Human Services. She is also active at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church where she is a Eucharistic Minister and a former CCD teacher.

Realtors in Westfield. Mr. Fawcett has beenamember oftheHistoricPreservation Committeesince 1993andhasserved asitsChairman since1995.Mr.Fawcett wasalsothefounder andorganizerofthe Freddie SpencerMemorialBicycleRace from 1993 to 1996.

This event serves as one of the primary fund raisers for the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad.Additionally,thecandidate served ontheDowntownDevelopment Committeein 1997andtheArchitectural Review Committeein1995and 1996.

Mr. Fawcett earned his Bachelor's Degree in Communications and Master's DegreeofBusinessAdministration in Marketing from Hofstra University onLongIsland. Healsoearneda Masterof ArchitectureDesignfromthe New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark.

"Theresidents ofthiscommunityhave anexcellentqualityof life.Ifelected,we will work to maintain that quality of life whileholdingthe lineonpropertytaxes. Working with Bob and Paulette, I will work to ensure that this community will continuetobethe envyofitsneighbors," said Mr. Fawcett.

Gabe Spera, Chairman of the Scotch Plains Republican Committee, said of the candidates.

"The Republican Party has three outstanding candidates inBob,Pauletteand Jim. Each of them has a strong record of servicetothiscommunity torunon,and I amsurethatthe votersofScotchPlains will recognize that on November 3," he said.

Mr. Spera named Nancy Malool and Anthony Albanese as the Republican CampaignCo- Chairmen.

Programs for Kids Planned On Head Injury Prevention

Four head injury prevention programs, which have won awards from the National Safety Council, will be conducted for children at two area schools on Monday and Tuesday, April 27 and 28. Twenty "National Safekids, BellSport"bicyclehelmets will also be distributed.

The programs are sponsored by the WestfieldChapter oftheUnitedStates Junior ChamberofCommerce"Westfield Jaycees," in cooperation with the Safety Ambassador Corporation of the Humpty Dumpty Association.

The programs are designed to educate young children about the importance of head injury prevention, according tospokesmanDavidBuckman. EileenRooney oftheYMCAChild Care Center of Westfield is preparing her students for another visit by "Humpty P. Dumpty, Ph. D., The Safety Professor," who will provide information during an interactive lecture. The programs will be con ducted on Monday at the "Y" at 9: 15

and 10 a. m. DorothySzot, PrincipaloftheHoly Trinity InterparochialSchoolinWestfield, revealed that the Jaycees are sponsoring this type of program for her first- through eighth- grade students. Two programs will be held at the school on Tuesday at 1 and 2: 30 p. m.
