National Search Begins To Find Director for Westfield SID

Main Street Director Moving
to Head Cranford Program

The Downtown Westfield Corporation (WDC) has begun a national search for an Executive Director of its newly formed Special Improvement District (SID). The corporation’s Board of Directors appointed by the Town Council is the governing body for the SID. The full-time manager will be responsible for implementing the downtown revitalization programs outlined in the annual budget.

The Executive Director will work with SID board members, district stakeholders and volunteers to coordinate activities under the four major areas of design, promotion, economic restructuring and organization. In addition, the director will be the principal on-site staff person for the program, with responsibility for maintaining the SID office, keeping records and managing the budget. The SID's first-year budget of $184,000 recently was approved by the Town Council.

"Downtown Westfield is undergoing major transition, with the potential of becoming a renowned shopping and entertainment destination," said Joseph Spector, WDC Chairman. "This position presents an outstanding opportunity for an ambitious, hands-on manager who can unite volunteers and business owners to make this a thriving business community well into the next century."

The board has approved a job description for the position and appointed a search committee to review applicants. Primary qualifications for the job are a bachelor's degree (master's degree preferred), strong communication and interpersonal skills, and experience in one or more of the following areas: community or economic development, non-profit management, retail, marketing and/or small business development.

Additional skills in strategic planning, special events coordination, and computer literacy are also desired. Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience, Mr. Spector explained.

Interested individuals can reply with salary history to: Search Committee, Downtown Westfield Corp., 425 East Broad Street, Westfield, 07090.

The SID was created last June by the council to revitalize and manage Westfield’s downtown district as a town asset. The program is supported through an assessment on downtown properties.

In an effort to get the program started before the first tax payment comes in August, the council approved a $59,000 bridge loan to the SID.
