Westfield Hosts Indoor LacrosseTournament

An indoor lacrosse invitational was held at the Peddie School in Hightstown on March 8 and 9. Westfield Lacrosse Club seventh- and eighth-grade A Team, coached by John Flood and Bruce Simone, hosted the event that drew teams from New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia.

After two days of fierce competition in the converted Peddie hockey rink, the Braddock Road Youth Club from Virginia took first place in the championship game against Ridgewood, with a final score of 18-16. Ridgewood finished second with the Westfield team placing third in a field of six teams.

Westfield won the tourney’s first game ,13-9, against the Potomac A team from Maryland. John Henry Flood displayed an aggressive attack scoring four goals. Additional goals were won by attackmen Chris Dodge, Matt Hall, Rob Larsen, Jacob Dupont, Mike Farley, Brad Gillen, Glen Hurley, Conner Mulvey, and Brendan Molloy -- all with one goal each. Superior team play was demonstrated by Conner Mulvey and Matt Simone with numerous assists and strategy setups for shots on goal.

Virginia won against Westfield by a slim score of 9-7. Scoring for the Blue were Conner Mulvey with five goals, with Dodge and Hall scoring one goal each.

The third game pitted Westfield against Montclair-Delbarton. Westfield won the game, 15-6, led by the scoring of Hurley with three goals, Dodge and John Graham with two each, and Farley, Hall, Gillen, Dupont, Mulvey, Molloy and Greg Elliott with one goal each.

Westfield won the fourth game, 14-9, against the Maryland B Team. Unbeatable teamwork was demonstrated by Farley who assisted Tom Wade in scoring five goals. Aggressive attack man Dodge also scored five goals, assisted by Hurley and Farley. Additional goals were scored by Elliott with two, Jack Kane and Farley with one each.

Westfield’s final tournament game was lost to Ridgewood with a score of 7-6. A fierce attack was launched by the Ridgewood team forcing the Blue onto the defensive for most of the game.

Goal tenders Tim Mansfield and Dan Morrissey had stellar performance on defense in all tournament games.

The Westfield A team won the outdoor season opener against Madison at home on March 15 by a final score of 10-2.
