Westfield High School Hockey Blue Devils Gain Needed Experience on the Ice

By DAVID B. CORBIN Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Although very young and very new, the Westfield High School boys hockey team through the guidance of Head Coach Brian LaFontaine became more exciting and competitive on the ice this season. With the skating presence of senior forward Derek Fisher and the stiff competition, the young Blue Devils picked up valuable experience.

Fisher, the team Captain, inspired and impressed the Blue Devils with his skillful skating and his physical playing techniques. In addition, Fisher led the team in scoring, slapping in 29 goals and adding 12 assists.

For his efforts, Fisher was recognized by opposing coaches and was selected to the First Team of the National B Conference of New Jersey. Only six players were named to the First Team and six to the Second Team.

Westfield High School will lose only three seniors to graduation this year and will produce an experienced team of 10 seniors next season.

Along with Fisher, goalie Bryan Graye and forward Wayne Pai will be graduating. Pai had two goals and one assist and Graye played gallantly as goalie.

Other strong influences on the Blue Devils were juniors Bryan Gates, Brendan Hickey and Christian Fagan, and sophomore Ronnie Kashlak.

Gates scored five goals and had 11 assists for 16 total points while Hickey had five goals and three assists. Fagin targeted four goals and set up four assists.

Kashlak may possibly be a candidate to follow Fisher’s skate tracks. With a very impressive season, Kashlak was second on the team in scoring, flicking in 22 goals and passing off 19 assists.

Sophomore forward Josh Falcone scored three goals and had three assists as sophomore Dan Marer added three goals. Junior Brad Schwartz and sophomore Kevin Anton supplied one goal and two assists each. Junior Matt Hanas contributed three assists and junior Eric Schoenberg added one assist.

The remainder of the Blue Devils roster are: juniors Erik Kolb, Steve Wlazlo, Brian Garrison and Ian Wolkoff, and freshman Derek Lartuad.

As a team, the Blue Devils totaled 75 goals and 61 assists and look forward to adding many more goals and assists next year.

FIRST TEAM ALL-AREA…Senior Derek Fisher amassed 29 goals and 12 assists for the Westfield High School hockey team this season and was named to the First Team of the National B Conference of New Jersey. Only six players were named to the first team.

GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP…After the Blue Devils’ game against Bayonne High School on February 20, the players of both teams put aside the heat of competition and met at center ice to congratulate each other for a game well played. Bayonne High School defeated Westfield High School, 6-1.
