"TIGHT WAIST AND WRIST" Jamil Johnson of Colonia High School attempts to control Frank Thorne of the Raiders with a tight waist and wrist control maneuver during his 215-pound class bout. Thorne gave Johnson about all he could handle as Johnson won a hard-fought 11-6 decision. The Raiders defeated Colonia, 58-19, in Scotch Plains on February 20. |
Raiders Beat Colonia, 58-19; Lose to J. P. Stevens, 32-30 By DAVID B. CORBIN for The Westfield Leader and The Times The Raider wrestling team hosted Colonia High School and J. P. Stevens on February 20 and came up with a big win and came down with a heart-breaking loss. Against Colonia, it appeared the Raiders were going to have a slow start as 103-pounder David Loewinger found himself on the verge of being the victim of a technical fall. Being behind 11-2, Loewinger found his opportunity when he caught Rob Felline of Colonia off balance, reversed him and rolled him to his back to score a third-period fall. At 119, Lee Loewinger met a very tough Nick Cilento and was taken down several times and tilted to his back a few times as Cilento registered a 16-4 majority decision. After Tony Melendez received a forfeit at 125, Antenor Petitfrere blazed like a ball of fire as he immediately scored a takedown on Rich Dzuiban of Colonia at the 130-pound class. Petitfrere engineered a few more takedowns, an escape and a three-point near fall to win a convincing, 11-2 majority decision. Raider Josh Hetzel recorded a come-from-behind fall over Tim ORorke in 3:47 at the 152-pound class. At the 215-pound class, although he lost an 11-6 decision to talented Jimil Johnson, Frank Thorne of the Raiders dished out some physical punishment of his own and served notice to Johnson that he was in for a battle. The final bout of the match ended with heavyweight Jim Feeley easily finishing off Kevin Thompson in 1:59. The match with J. P. Stevens had several close bouts, all ending in favor of J. P. Stevens which allowed them to eke out a narrow 32-30 victory. The deciding match came at the 125-pound class when Rudy Valentino won a 6-4 overtime decision over Tony Melendez of the Raiders which gave three team points to J. P. Stevens instead of to Scotch Plains-Fanwood. J.P. Stevens lifted its record to 12-7 and Colonia High School dropped to 7-9. The split set Scotch Plains-Fanwood High Schools record at 9-5-2.
