Union County Scholar-Athlete Awards
Awards Dinner Set to Honor Local Student-Athletes

The Union County Athletic Conference will host its 20th Annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner on Thursday, May 15 at 7 p.m. at the Westwood in Garwood. The awards are given to Union County seniors who excel both athletically and academically.

Among the recipients will be seven local high school students. Representing Westfield High School will be seniors Suzy Kozub, Molly Phelan and Jason Yarusi, representing Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School will be seniors Meghan Langevin and Ross MacIntyre, and representing Union Catholic High School will be seniors Lauren Majchrzak and Daniel Varady.

Each student has compiled a long list of athletic and academic accomplishments throughout their high school careers. Some of their achievements will be mentioned.

Kozub’s athletic accomplishments come in the fields of Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track. In Cross Country, Kozub was team Captain her senior year, made First Team All County, All Conference and All Area her junior and senior year, and was the Union County Individual Champion.

Throughout her four years of Indoor Track, Kozub won Union County Championships in the 800, 1,600 and the 3,200 meter races. She was recognized as the Outstanding High School Athlete her freshman year and established a Westfield High School record as a member of the 4 X 800 meter relay team in the Eastern States Championship her senior year.

In Outdoor Track, Kozub set a school record in the 800 meter and was a member of the 4 X 400 meter relay team which also established a new school record.

Academically, Kozub was on the honor roll all four years, including the Distinguished Honor Roll and National Honor Society her junior year, and was in the French Honor Society. She has been the Student Council Representative, a member of the French Club and was involved in the Environmental Club.

Phelan was a Tri-Captain of the girls Field Hockey team, named the Most Valuable Senior of the swimming team, became The Westfield Leader Scholar-Athlete for the month of February and made All-American Consideration as a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team.

Phelan made the Distinguished Honor Roll three times, the National Honor Society twice and was a National Merit Finalist. Phelan has been a member of the German Club and was a Junior Twig at the Children’s Specialized Hospital all four years.

Yarusi, who excelled in football and basketball, was named First Team All County and All Area in football, set a Westfield High School record with 139 tackles and was named The Westfield Leader Scholar-Athlete for the month of November, 1996.

Yarusi has consistently been named the Student of the Month, been on the Distinguished Honor Roll and, in his senior year, was the recipient or the Bryan Piccolo Award. Yarusi has been a member of the Italian Club throughout high school and was selected as Homecoming King his senior year.

Langevin excelled on the Scotch Plains-Fanwood girls soccer and track teams. In soccer, Langevin was named to the First Team Union County Coaches All Star Team in 1995 and 1996. She was selected to the All-State Soccer list in 1996.

Langevin has been on the Honor Roll in 1995, 1996, and 1997. She was in the National Honor Society for Spanish and is presently Vice President of the senior class.

MacIntyre was a member of the boys soccer teams which won the Section 2, Group 3 State Championship in 1994, 1995 and 1996, and the Group 3 State Championship in 1995.

MacIntyre has been on the Honor Roll and has received certificates for Academic Distinction throughout his high school career. MacIntyre was a finalist for the Marquis Scholar Program at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania and received the Edward J. Broustein Distinguished Scholar Award. MacIntyre also has been Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper.

Majchrzak, who gained state-wide recognition in basketball, also competes on the softball team. In basketball, Majchrzak was named First Team All County in 1996 and 1997 and Third Team Parochial All State. Majchrzak achieved several individual basketball milestones, hitting a school record 19-19 from the foul line, scoring 36 points in one game against Mater Dei High School and totaling an astounding 1,320 career points.

Academically, Majchrzak has made the Honor Roll every marking period and carries a nearly perfect grade point average. She has been a recipient of the Edward J. Bloustein Award for Academics and will attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Varady has competed on the high school basketball and baseball team for four years. He is presently the Captain of the baseball team.

Varady has been on the Honor Roll and has been on the National Honor Society his junior and senior year. Varady has received academic scholarships from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York and Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina.

All seven student-athletes are near the top of their respective classes academically and represent the "total package" of a scholar, an athlete and a citizen.
