Westfield High School junior Mike Baly made it look easy as he put on a takedown exhibition in the finals of the Blue Devil Classic at the 160-pound weight class. Baly had six takedowns, three escapes, two reversals and a three-point near fall to defeat Joe Ickles of Howell, 22-10.
Having received the first seed, Baly advanced to the semifinals with a first-round bye and reached the finals by pinning Mike Szymonowicz of Piscataway in 5:51. Baly used a variety of tilts for near fall points before he pinned Szymonowicz.
Sophomore Onur Tezucar, seeded second in the tournament, dominated Dave Cifuentes of Princeton in the semifinals of the 140-pound class, defeating him 10-1.
This set-up a showdown of two third-place finishers in the 1996 Region 3 Tournament. Jeff Gallichio of Roselle Park, the first-seeded wrestler, proved to be to strong for Tezucar on this day by winning 12-0. Gallichio began by taking Tezucar down in the first period. Once on the top position, Gallichio took advantage of Tezucar's weakness on bottom by scoring two, two-point near falls and a three-point near fall. Gallichio also scored two-points on a reversal and one penalty point.
Jeff Kivitz placed fourth at 112 by defeating Pat Cooley of Morristown, 8-4.
Nick Friedman had a good showing in the 130-pound weight class by capturing third place. Friedman advanced to the semifinals by beating Tom DiPollo, 6-3. He then was defeated by Bill Crecca of Roselle Park, who eventually became the champion, and beat Tom Phillips of Morristown in the consolations, 8-6.
At the 135-pound class, Jarett Kamins finished third by pinning Matt Svoboda of Dover in 1:56.
Brian Joffe finished fourth at the 145-pound class by advancing to the semifinals with a 14-2 victory over Joe Choe of Dover.
The tournament was dominated by a very powerful Roselle Park team, which was able to enter two wrestlers in several weight classes; only the Varsity wrestlers were allowed to contribute to the team score. The Panthers entered 11 Varsity wrestlers in the finals and had five champions. Roselle Park totaled 205.5 points.
Piscataway edged Howell for the second spot scoring 104 team points to Howell's 101 points. The Westfield Blue Devils finished with 66 team points.
