The New Jersey Youth Symphony (NJYS), Inc. senior musicians will begin the upcoming season under the leadership of a new conductor, Adrian Bryttan.
Mr. Bryttan will join the artistic staff of the organization, which recently was awarded a Citation of Excellence by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
Mr. Bryttan is a conductor of national and international orchestras, opera companies and other youth orchestras. The Youth Symphonys premiere performance under his direction will include a multi-media production of Gunther Schullerss Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee.
In February, the Symphony will provide the musical score for a showing of the silent film, The Flesh and the Devil, starring Greta Garbo and John Garfield.
Mr. Bryttan is also a solo violinist, instructor and recording artist.
Not only will the young performers have a new conductor, they will have a new musical home, as well. The NJYS, Inc. will be moving into a building in New Providence, designed to be a first-rate rehearsal and performance space with state-of-the-art acoustics in September, according to a spokesman for the society.
The new site, called The New Jersey Youth Symphony Music Center, will be shared by the Suburban Community Music Center.
The Symphony provides various training programs for more than 300 aspiring musicians from 85 communities.
These programs, all of which currently include residents of Westfield, are the Youth Symphony, for superior high school students; the Youth Orchestra, for advanced high school students; Philharmonia, for beginning orchestral students; Junior Strings, for beginning string ensemble performers; Orchestral String Training Ensemble for beginning string players, flute choirs and wind and percussion training groups.
Westfield residents in the groups include: Youth Symphony, Andy Bhasin, Kathryn Chern, Sung Bin Lee, Deirdre Lynn, Beth Rubel, Beth Satkin, Isabel Shen; Philharmonia, Emily Chen, Derlen Chiu, Robert Hwang, Dina Kim, James Lim, Diane Born Park, Jason Tammam, and Rosemary Topar.
Members of the Orchestral String Training Ensemble include Ted Chou, James Hwang and Lizzy Myers, all of Westfield.
Other town residents include Lindsay Long-Waldor, Junior Strings; John Chern, Kira Jacobs, Evan Lee, David Louie, David Paik, Lauren Todaro,Margaret Wei and Christina Yang, Youth Orchestra, and Kelly Yang, Flute Choir.
