Tim is a small business owner and professional planner with 30+ years of experience in 20 states and 30 countries. He has a BS from Duke and Master of Regional Planning from Penn; is certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners; and is a former officer of the American Planning Association. Tim has been a member of the Westfield Green Team advising on energy efficiency and renewable energy and obtaining Sustainable Jersey certification. He was a member of citizen committees for planning, zoning and environmental issues in Reston, Virginia. Tim has been applying these capabilities in consulting to local communities across New Jersey, regularly bringing him into contact with municipal governments.<br>
Family and Community. Tim Van Epp has lived on Glen Avenue in Westfield for 7 years with his wife, Barbara Wong, and two daughters, Marissa and Sirena. Sirena recently graduated from Westfield High, where she was active in track and soccer, and is now attending Occidental in California. Marissa, a Columbia graduate, recently completed her Master’s at Oxford, and has enrolled at London School of Economics. Barbara grew up in Livingston NJ, is a Princeton graduate and professional hydrogeologist. Tim enjoys bicycling, tennis and bird watching. He has come to know Westfield through his Glen Avenue neighbors, Sirena’s school activities, and his involvement in Westfield bicycling groups.<br>
Issues and Positions. Tim’s unique experience and skills as a Westfield professional planner and small business owner will bring public outreach, forward thinking, positive energy and proactive leadership to Westfield town government. Tim will take a vigilant and proactive approach to addressing the challenges and opportunities our community faces. Westfield has tremendous assets and quality of life, but these can be lost. Rather than using the poor economic times as an excuse for cutting vital services, we need to tackle problems – and pursue opportunities – to continually improve our community. Tim will not shy away from making the tough decisions.<br>
Despite our high property taxes, our money is being wasted and Westfield’s safety is being seriously compromised – too few firefighters to man the ladder truck, crossing guards being laid off – because too much of Town Council business is conducted behind closed doors. As a professional planner, making safety and financial decisions in the open while considering their broader and longer-term implications are second nature. Tim will ensure that the community is informed and included by proactively taking full advantage of the diversity of views, talents and volunteer spirit offered by Westfield’s residents, thus creating synergies among residents and businesses and empowering the whole community to get involved in envisioning and building a sustainable future.
