Candidate Bio and Statement:
    Senator Tom Kean, Jr. was appointed to the New Jersey General Assembly in April 2001 to fill out the unexpired term of Alan Augustine. He then was elected to a full term in the Assembly in November 2001.
    In March 2003, he was appointed to the New Jersey Senate to fill out the unexpired term of Rich Bagger. In November 2003, he was elected to a full four-year term. In 2004, Mr. Kean was elected Senate Minority Whip, a position he held until 2007 when he was named Minority Leader.
    He currently serves on the Senate Commerce, Education, Legislative Oversight and Legislative Services Committees.
    He was one of only 24 elected officials from across the nation to be chosen as a distinguished Aspen Rodel Fellow in Public Service in 2005. In 2002, he was named one of 40 state leaders from the entire nation to be recognized as a Toll Fellow by the Council of State Governments for high achievement and service to state government.
    Mr. Kean ran unsuccessfully for Congress in the Republican Primary Election in 2000 and was the party’s nominee against Robert Menendez for the U.S. Senate in 2006.
    Prior to entering politics, Mr. Kean was an aide to the late Congressman Bob Franks and was a special assistant at the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
    He has also been a volunteer firefighter and a volunteer emergency medical technician.
    Mr. Kean holds B.A. degree from Dartmouth College in history and a doctorate from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in International Relations.
    Mr. Kean, the son of former Governor Thomas H. Kean, resides in Westfield with his wife, Rhonda, and their two daughters.
