Candidate Bio and Statement: andysmithnj.com
Andy promises to hold the Democratic controlled Freeholder Board accountable for their actions. His election will help to break up the power monopoly of the current Union County's Board of Chosen Freeholders and their associates.
Andy will focus on eliminating blatant wasteful spending like the $1.5 to $2 million spent on MusicFest every year, and the $136,000 spent to revise and maintain the County website. Union Countyís spending has forced cuts in other, more beneficial areas, and has had a detrimental effect on municipalities, which has played a large role in layoffs or reductions in staff.
Andy wants to put an end to the nepotism which in part influenced the Union County Freeholder Boardís decision to give lifetime benefits to 647 non-union employees, many of whom have close ties to high level Union County politicians. Andy Smith wants to bring to light and eliminate the nonsensical back room deals like the Covanta lease.
To lower the 5th highest property taxes out of 3000 counties nationwide, as listed by Forbes Magazine, Andy Smith, as your Union County Freeholder will encourage business and job creation throughout Union County and make the communities of Union County affordable for growing families and retirees.
Andy realizes that to bring change to the governance of Union County will require the effort of the county residents, and he asks for your vote and support to make this change possible. Please visit the CONTRIBUTION page to support Andyís efforts, or email ANDY@ANDYSMITHNJ.COM to VOLUNTEER. Andy is campaigning throughout the communities of Union County, and would greatly appreciate your time and assistance to get out the message to Union County Ė Itís time for Accountability, Itís time for Cutting Waste, Itís time for Lower Property Taxes, Itís Time for Change!
Andy has been active in his community since moving to Summit in 2006, serving on the Summit Health Board, being elected Vice Chairman of the Summit Republican City Committee, and serving as the Adjutant General of American Legion Post #322, among other civic activities.
Andy is an attorney who started his own successful law practice, Smith + Schwartzstein LLC, in 2009, after working at one of New Jerseyís largest law firms, Gibbons P.C. Andyís experience starting and running a small business gives him insight into the needs of small businesses and the role of government in their survival and prosperity.
Between college at Rochester Institute of Technology and law school at Boston College, Andy served as an Artillery Officer at the rank of Captain in the United States Army deploying to overseas locations such as Bosnia and South Korea. This leadership experience was invaluable, and he plans to rely on these leadership and managerial skills as a Freeholder.
Andy lives in Summit with his wife Kathryn, his four-year old son Gavin, two-year old daughter Charlotte, and one-year old son Matthew.
