Candidate Bio and Statement: Jeffrey E. Strauss is a Candidate for Reelection to the Scotch Plains Council. For the last four years on the town council, Councilman Strauss has worked across party lines and town borders to put Community First, building consensus for action and change. Now an Independent, Councilman Strauss was appointed Deputy Mayor by a Republican Mayor after initial election as a Democrat. With this unique perspective he is dedicated to putting community before politics. He continues to serve as the Council Liaison to the Recreation Commission where he has worked tirelessly to continue the wise and cost effective management of town recreational facilities and activities, such as strongly supporting the creation of the Southside Turf field, and to improve the programs that our residents and families enjoy. Councilman Strauss has been and continues to be actively engaged in the Shared Service initiatives between the Township, Fanwood, and our public schools. He is an integral part of the ongoing Shared Services efforts between Scotch Plains and Fanwood, working to streamline government, eliminate redundancies, increase efficiencies and save taxpayer money. Having previously resided in Fanwood where he served on the Fanwood Zoning Board of Adjustment and Planning Board, Councilman Strauss has a unique perspective and understanding on how we can improve our governmental functions and share the services we need. Councilman Strauss served as a member of the Scotch Plains Planning Board, as the council liaison to the Environmental Commission and has been the liaison to the Historical Review Commission which strives to protect the rich historical homes and treasures contained within our borders. Councilman Strauss is from Union County and is a graduate of Rutgers University where he majored in Zoology and Physiology. He then attended graduate school at Boston University attaining his Master of Science degree in Applied Anatomy and Physiology. He chose to enter the law in 1983 going on to graduate in 1986 Cum Laude from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Michigan as an editor of the Law Review. He is a partner in the law firm of Weiner & Strauss located in Montvale, New Jersey practicing litigation in New Jersey and New York. Mr. Strauss has served on the Executive Board of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Youth Baseball Association as Division Vice President and has coached his sonsí baseball and soccer teams.
