Professional Background: Senator McCain served for
22 years in the United States Navy as a naval aviator.
He retired from the Navy in 1981 and was elected to the
U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982.
Education: Senator McCain graduated from the U.S.
Naval Academy in 1958. After graduation, he entered the
Navy.
Experience: From 1982 to 1986, Senator McCain
represented the first congressional district of Arizona
in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1986, he was
elected to the U.S. Senate from Arizona, where he has
remained since. He is the Ranking Member of the Senate
Committee on Armed Services, and serves as a member of
the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and
Transportation. He also serves on the Senate Committee
on Indian Affairs.
