Professional Background: Senator Lautenberg
co-founded and served as chairman and CEO of Automatic
Data Processing, the United States’ first payroll
services company. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in
1982.
Education: Senator Lautenberg attended Columbia
University, graduating in 1949 with a degree in
economics.
Experience: Senator Lautenberg served his first
term in the U.S. Senate in 1982, and was re-elected in
1988, 1994 and 2002. During his first three terms, he
worked to help balance the federal budget, ban smoking
on airplanes and implement more gun control laws. Since
the beginning of his fourth term, he has introduced
legislation to provide more Homeland Security resources
for New Jersey. He also serves as the ranking Democrat
on the subcommittee on global warming.
