Candidate Information

Professional Background: Rose was a business teacher in the North Plainfield Adult School and a substitute teacher at North Plainfield High School. She also worked as a guidance counselor and business teacher in the Elizabeth Public School System. She entered public service in 1977 and has served on multiple municipal, county and state boards.

Education: Rose has a Master's Degree in Schools Administration from Rutgers University. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in business from Rider College, and she also studied at Seton Hall University and the University of Tennessee.

Family Life: Rose is a lifelong resident of North Plainfield. She is the widow of John McConnell; they have four children - John, Patricia, Kevin and James - and four grandchildren.

Elected Experience: Rose served on the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders from 1990-1999; she was the director from 1994 to 1997. She served on the Somerset County Planning Board from 1991 to 1992 and was an alternate from 1993 to 1995. She was a member of the North Plainfield Borough Council from 1977 to 1990 and was its president in 1983.

Clubs and Organizations: Rose has served on the Somerset County Council on Affordable Housing (COHA) board of directors and the Somerset County Family Counseling Services board of directors since 1992 and the Somerset County Medical Center board of trustees since 1991. She has been on the Somerset County Governing Officials Association since 1985; she was its president in 1986. She serves on the Somerset Public Employees Charitable Campaign and was its chair from 1993 to 1994.

She sits on the New Jersey Advisory Commission on the Status of Women (she sat on Somerset County's commission from 1994 to 1997), the Somerset County Park Commission, the county's board of social services, the county's advisory council to the Office on Aging, the county's youth services commission and the county's liquor- and alcohol-abuse council.

She is a member of New Jersey Women in Municipal Government, and she sat on the New Jersey Elected Women Officials Board in 1993. She is a member of both the New Jersey and Somerset Federation of Republican Women. She sits on the Heritage Trail Association's board of directors and is a member of the Friends of Vermeule Preservation of Revolutionary Historic Sites.

She is a trustee in the North Plainfield Republican Club and a member of the North Plainfield Community Center committee and the Somerset Alliance for Future. She is in the Catholic Women's Club of the Plainfields, and she served on the Somerset Council Tercentenary Committee in 1998.

She is a member of the alumni associations at both Rutgers University and Rider College.

She has received multiple awards for her work in public service.

Major Campaign Issues: Rose is focused on taxes, taxes and taxes. She believes New Jersey's property taxes are "breaking the backs" of families in the state.  As a senior citizen, she has seen people who have worked in New Jersey their whole lives but have to move out of the state because of high taxes.

She wants to break the "business as usual" attitude in Trenton.
