goleader.com Election Coverage 2007
Union County Freeholder
George O'Grady
Party Affiliation: Independent

Candidate Information

Professional Background: Mr. O'Grady, a lifelong Elizabeth resident, works for the Elizabeth Board of Education as a community-attendance liaison. He served in the United States Air Force 1965 to 1969 and is a Vietnam combat veteran.

Education: The candidate is a high-school graduate.

Family Life: Mr. O'Grady has been married to the former Anne Marie Jackowsky for 37 years. They have four children: Kathleen, Scott, Lisa and Sean.

Government Experience: Mr. O'Grady has been a committeeman representing the second ward, fourth district in Elizabeth for six years. He has run for the office of Union County Freeholder four times. He ran for the second-ward council seat in Elizabeth in June 2006 - he won the election but lost in September in a court-ordered do-over election.

Clubs and Organizations: Mr. O'Grady is a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 253, in Elizabeth. This is his 30th year as an executive board member of the Elmora Youth League baseball, softball and basketball programs. He is a eucharistic minister and adult altar server at Saint Genevieve Parish in Elizabeth; he also volunteers in different groups.

Major Campaign Issues:
a. High county taxes
b. Run-away spending
c. Overall constant growth of county government
d. Term limits for Freeholders
e. No pension for those holding part-time positions

We have to look for ways to shrink the County work force without cutting services.
We have to look into shared services with municipalities or even other counties.
