TAKING FIRST IN CANADA… Gio Palatucci, left, and Emily MacNeil of Westfield display their firstplace medals won in Montreal Canada at the Brossard Soccer Challenge.

Two Westfielders Help Capture Canadian Title

Two Westfield girls, Gio Palatucci and Emily MacNeil, and their soccer teammates went to the final match for the second consecutive year at the Brossard Challenge in Montreal, Canada, and wound up in a tie. But unlike last year, the title went to these U14 girls from the Summer Select Program of the MidNew Jersey Youth Soccer Association (MNJYSA).

The championship game was a rematch with a Toronto team which won an earlier contest, 10. But with the championship game tied 11 at the end of regulation play and scoreless in overtime, the MNJYSA finally eliminated the Canadian team with a contest of penalty kicks.

Palatucci and MacNeil have been members of the Westfield Soccer Association traveling program, playing on the Killer Bees the past five seasons. Palatucci is a student at Edison Intermediate School while MacNeil attends Roosevelt Intermediate School.

SPF Soccer Jazz Girls Take Second in Piscataway Tourney

The Scotch PlainsFanwood Jazz girls intercity soccer team began their fall season with a second place finish at the Piscataway Soccer Tournament this past weekend. The Jazz were undefeated and unscored upon until the Monroe Shooting Stars managed to nail two goals in a shootout after game four ended in a 00 tie.

The Jazz began with a solid 10 win over Piscataway. Shannon Hauser accounted for the only scoring when she rapped in a point blank shot. Next, the Jazz blanked the Hunterdon United Cosmos, 30. Staci Goldberg scored first and Briana Falco scored second when she fired a blast over the goalie’s head from 35 yards out. Then, Gaby Falco booted a corner kick which was skill fully directed by Jess McGarry to the far

post, where the ball was booted in by Meaghan Kelly.

On September 10, Bitsy Kipping scored the first two goals against the New Providence Sharks. The first came on a breakaway. Kristen Henkels made a nice clearing pass which Jessica Churgin picked up at mid field, streaked past two defenders and found Kipping who faked the goalkeeper to the right and then found the left corner of the net. Hallie Mintz scored next when she cleverly intercepted a goal kick and converted. Katie Van Haasteren completed the scoring when she scorched a shot into the upper right corner of the net. Lauren Hercel and Lindsey Fitzgerald assisted on the play.

ABBC Base Ball Men Edge Elizabeth Resolutes, 1612

By DAVID B. CORBIN

Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Old Time Base Ball took center “field” once again at Echo Lake Park in Mountainside on September 9 when the Elizabeth Resolutes, a team comprised of local residents, went head to head with the Atlantic Base Ball Club (ABBC) of Brooklyn. In a previous meeting, also at Echo Lake, ABBC downed the Resolutes, 51. This time there was plenty of offensive but ABBC still prevailed 1612.

Both teams dress in authentic base ball uniforms from the Civil War era and play by 1864 rules controlled by an umpire who more resembles a local vicar. The ball is slightly larger and softer than the present day baseballs, the pitching is actually underhanded and no gloves are used. Any disputes are handled by the gentlemanly protocol of the era.

ABBC struck with a run in the bottom of the first but the Resolutes roared with four in the fourth on runs scored by Ray Pinho of Scotch Plains, Steve Hingle and Pat King of Westfield and Jim Constandi of Garwood.

But ABBC answered with three to tie the score in the bottom of the inning.

Situations did shift drastically when the Resolutes erupted for six runs in the fifth. Hingel, King Constandi, Mike Cummings of Roselle, Bill Heaney of Springfield and Tom Mullen of Kenilworth all crossed the plate. However, ABBC responded loudly with five runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, ABBC took the lead, 1110, with a tworun squirt, featuring the heavyhitting of “Pigtail” Elmore, who hammered a tworun double. Then in the seventh, with the scrappiness of “Pappy” Rick Holle, ABBC increased its lead to 1310.

Constandi singled to start the eighth, then stole second and third. Cummings rapped an RBI single, then Westfield’s Paul Salamone smashed an RBI single to right to narrow the score to 1312. Unfortunately, for the locals, ABBC added three runs in the eighth and held the Resolutes in the ninth.
